KOYAANISQATSI - Tribute - Koyanastaffy - Filmed in Stoke on Trent - Hanley and Newcastle under Lyme
Koyaanisqatsi - Life Out of Balance, is a 1982 film directed by Godfrey Reggio with cinematography by Ron Fricke. Set to music created by Philip Glass. The film showcases slow motion and time-lapse photography of many cities and natural landscapes across the United States of America. Here is our short attempt at a Koyaanisqatsi style film. Shot in various random locations in Staffordshire, England.
Koyaanisqatsi: Life Out of Balance, is a 1982 American experimental film directed by Godfrey Reggio with music composed by Philip Glass and cinematography by Ron Fricke.
The film consists primarily of slow motion and time-lapse footage of cities and many natural landscapes across the United States. The visual tone poem contains neither dialogue nor a vocalized narration: its tone is set by the juxtaposition of images and music. Reggio explained the lack of dialogue by stating it's not for lack of love of the language that these films have no words. It's because, from my point of view, our language is in a state of vast humiliation. It no longer describes the world in which we live. In the Hopi language, the word Koyaanisqatsi means unbalanced life. The film is the first in the Qatsi trilogy of films: it is followed by Powaqqatsi (1988) and Naqoyqatsi (2002). The trilogy depicts different aspects of the relationship between humans, nature, and technology. Koyaanisqatsi is the best known of the trilogy and is considered a cult film. However, because of copyright issues, the film was out of print for most of the 1990s.
► Synopsis
The first image in the film is of the Great Gallery pictograph in Horseshoe Canyon (Utah), in Canyonlands National Park. The section shown depicts several tall, shadowed figures standing near a taller figure adorned with a crown. The next image is a close-up of a Saturn V rocket during its launch (Apollo 11). The film fades into a shot of a desolate desert landscape. From there, it progresses to footage of various natural phenomena such as waves and clouds.
The film's introduction to human involvement in the environment is a low aerial shot of choppy water, cutting to a similar shot of rows of cultivated flowers. After aerial views of monumental rock formations partly drowned by the artificial Lake Powell, we see a large mining truck causing billows of black dust. This is followed by shots of power lines in the desert. Man's continued involvement in the environment is depicted through images of mining operations, oil fields, the Navajo Generating Station, the Glen Canyon Dam, and atomic bomb detonations in a desert. Following the atomic bomb detonations, the next sequence begins with a shot of sunbathers on a beach, then pans to the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station in the background. Shots of taxiing United Airlines Boeing 747 aircraft and traffic patterns during rush hour are seen on a freeway and a shot of a large parking lot. This is followed with stock footage of Soviet tanks lined up in rows and a military aircraft, and an aircraft carrier.
Time-lapse photography of shadows of clouds are seen moving across the skyscrapers. Shots of various housing projects in disrepair, and includes footage of the decay and demolition of the Pruitt-Igoe housing project in St. Louis. The sequence ends with footage of the destruction of large buildings. A time-lapse shot of a crowd of people who appear to be waiting in a line. This is followed by shots of people walking along streets in slow motion.

SNOWDON (Wales), United Kingdom (1)
After a long period of inactivity due to a lack of time for DX-ing, here is a new video from June 4, 2010 from the Snowdon mountains in NW Wales at an altitude of 1085 metres (the highest point in England and Wales and to the south of the Scottish Highlands).
FM radios from all four UK countries and the Republic of Ireland were available, although I was still a bit disappointed by the results - not even a single signal coming from more than 300 km at this altitude!
For the sake of comparison, you can have a look at one of my other videos to see what I received with the same equipment and without any tropo enhancement in Bulgaria at only 600 metres of altitude... It seems that southeastern Europe is, by and large, a much better place for FM DX-ing than the British Isles!

WEMB News: Blue Ridge Pottery
Every October, the Blue Ridge Pottery Show & Sale draws collectors from all over the world to Erwin, Tennessee.
In 1916, the Clinchfield, Carolina, and Ohio Railroad conceived the idea of constructing a pottery as a means of promoting industrial development along its railway. The tiny east Tennessee town of Erwin was selected as the site for the new pottery, in part due to the availability of raw materials essential to the manufacturing of pottery, including white Kaolin clay and Feldspar
Time Team - Season 20, Episode 3 - A Capital Hill (Ely, Cardiff)
Tony and the team investigate a large hill close to Cardiff that might be immensely significant as it could be the long-lost Iron Age capital of South Wales.

A34 Congleton Road, Butt Lane - Southbound Front View
The A34 is one of the longest A-roads in Britain, running for 200 miles (320km) from Winchester on the south coast to Salford near Manchester, although it is now split into two halves which are joined by the M40 motorway.
The A34 heads south from Congleton towards Newcastle-under-Lyme. Along the way, it passes through the villages of Astbury, Scholar Green and Hall Green (Church Lawton) before entering the county of Staffordshire. In Staffordshire, it passes through Butt Lane and Talke, where it reaches the A500 Stoke D Road. South of the A500, it enters the suburbs of the 2nd largest town in Staffordshire, Newcastle-under-Lyme.
This video shows a southbound journey from the A50 to the A5011, through Butt Lane, a suburb of Kidsgrove. It is available in three versions:

British Rail-Newark & Lincoln June 1989
A BR vid now from Newark and Lincoln. A couple of HST's with nice Valenta thrash are seen at Newark before we move to Lincoln. It had an abundance of semaphore signalling and several level crossings which add to Lincoln's traffic chaos! At Lincoln first generation DMU's are seen along with a couple of Sprinters. On the freight front a pair of 31s and a 47 pass through with oil trains. If you liked the video please subscribe to my channel, there are lots more transport & quirky vids to upload!
