Amesbury (/ˈeɪmzbəri/) is a town and civil parish in Wiltshire, England. It is most famous for the prehistoric monument of Stonehenge which is in its parish, and for the discovery of the Amesbury Archer—dubbed the King of Stonehenge in the press—in 2002. It has been confirmed by archaeologists that it is the oldest continuously occupied settlement in the United Kingdom, having been first settled around 8820 BC.[2]
King Alfred the Great left it in his will, a copy of which is in the British Library, to his youngest son Aethelweard (c.880-922).
Eleanor of Provence, Queen consort of Henry III of England, died in Amesbury on 24 or 25 June 1291, and was buried in Amesbury Priory.
The parish includes the hamlets of Ratfyn and West Amesbury, and most of Boscombe Down military airfield.Economy
Avient Aviation had its United Kingdom offices in the Minton Distribution Park in Amesbury.[23][24]
Transport
Amesbury is 6 miles (10 km) from the nearest station at Grateley on the London to Salisbury line. The town's own station, Amesbury railway station, was closed in 1963 along with the rest of the Bulford Camp Railway.
Amesbury Bus Station closed in January 2014 along with the station in nearby Salisbury as a cost cutting measure,[25] but longer distance Salisbury Reds services still stop in the town. Stagecoach operate a Salisbury-Amesbury-Tidworth-Andover service,[26] and National Express coaches run Salisbury-Amesbury-London.[27]

Eleanor of Provence, queen of England, died in Amesbury on 24 or 25 June 1291, and was buried in Amesbury Abbey. The parish includes the hamlets of Ratfyn and West Amesbury, and most of Boscombe Down military airfield.
Amesbury is located in southern Wiltshire, 7 miles (11 km) north of Salisbury on the A345. It sits in the River Avon valley on the southern fringes of Salisbury Plain and has historically been considered an important river crossing area on the road from London to Warminster and Exeter. This has continued into the present with the building of the A303 across the Avon next to the town. Originally the town developed around the water meadows next to several bends in the river, but in time has spread onto the valley hillsides and absorbed part of the military airfield at Boscombe Down.
The land around Amesbury has been settled since prehistoric times, evidenced by the monument of Stonehenge. Other finds in the parish point to large scale prehistoric structures and settlements in the whole area, including Bluestonehenge at West Amesbury, the numerous other monuments around Stonehenge, the discovery of a Neolithic village in the neighbouring parish of Durrington by the Stonehenge Riverside Project, and continuing excavations at Boscombe Down where Wessex Archaeology found the Amesbury Archer and Boscombe Bowmen. They are now on display at Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum. Amesbury is recognized as the oldest continuously occupied UK settlement.
The Church of England parish church of St Mary and St Melor is Grade I listed. It dates from the 12th century but was restored by William Butterfield in 1852-3. Amesbury Methodist Church was built in 1900, replacing an 1816 chapel. Christ the King Catholic church opened in 1985, replacing a 1933 building on a different site. Amesbury Baptist Church was built in 1997.
The mansion known as Amesbury Abbey is Grade I listed. It was built in 1834-1840 by architect Thomas Hopper for Sir Edmund Antrobus and replaced a house built in 1661 by John Webb for the 2nd Duke of Somerset. Diana's House and Kent House, gatehouses to the Abbey from the early 17th century, are both Grade II* listed. West Amesbury House is from the 15th century and is Grade I listed; it was remodelled in the early 20th century by Detmar Blow.

UK, Russia trade barbs over poisoning of British couple in Amesbury
두 번째 '노비촉 중독'에 英•러 갈등 재점화
Britain and Russia have traded accusations about the latest nerve agent poisoning in southwest England.
For more on this and other news around the world we turn to our Ro Aram…
Aram… what's the latest?
British detectives are trying to trace a contaminated item handled by a British couple in Amesbury, who remain critically ill at a hospital in Salisbury.
London believes the nerve agent used was Novichok - the same military-grade nerve agent used to poison ex-Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in March.
London blames Russia for that attack, but Moscow denies involvement.
British Home Secretary Sajid Javid demanded Moscow explain the latest incident.
…..It is now time that the Russian state comes forward and explains exactly what has gone on….. It is completely unacceptable for our people to be either deliberate or accidental targets, or for our streets, our parks, our towns to be dumping grounds for poison.
He also reassured the public that both areas of the poisoning have been decontaminated and pose no significant risk.
The accusations sparked a defiant response from Moscow.
For the sake of safety of the residents of our continent, we are calling on the government of Theresa May to stop intrigues and games with poisonous chemical agents, and to stop creating obstacles for the joint investigation of what happened on the British territory to Russian residents.
The Kremlin has again vehemently denied involvement in both poisonings, demanding London that it be part of the investigation.
As of yet, both countries have not provided any concrete evidence on both the Amesbury and Salisbury cases to back up their claims against each other.

Latest from scene of poisoning; graves of Skripal relatives
(7 Mar 2018) Ambulances and emergency vehicles have rushed to central Salisbury in England amid jitters following the collapse of a former Russian spy and his daughter there.
An eyewitness says emergency services escorted two women Wednesday afternoon from a building near a restaurant that had been cordoned off by police searching for clues as to what prompted Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia to fall ill on Sunday.
Police and ambulance services declined to comment and it was not immediately clear if the incident had anything to do with the ongoing investigation.
Meanwhile British counter-terror police cordoned off a new site in the case of the former Russian spy and his daughter.
London's Metropolitan Police secured Solstice Park, a business park in Amesbury near Stonehenge, the prehistoric monument and world heritage site.
Amesbury is about nine miles (14 kilometres) from Salisbury, where Skripal and his daughter Yulia were found collapsed on a bench Sunday.
Lloyd Ridley, who works nearby as a mechanic, told the Associated Press on Wednesday that some 40 firemen stood outside as the area was cordoned off, adding there were four people dressed up in hazmats going inside and retrieving stuff in these boxes and putting them outside in the cornered area.
British counterterrorism specialists have taken control of the case from local police trying to unravel the mystery of what happened to the pair.
The matter has not been declared a terrorist incident.
Police are also asking members of the public to come forward if they had visited a Salisbury pizza restaurant or pub where the couple were last seen on Sunday.

Travelodge Hotel Amesbury Stonehenge
This is what we were woken up to on a Sunday morning in September 2013 at Travelodge Amesbury. After complaining, travelodge informed me that they had been aware of a problem with the plumbing that was due to be fixed - yet they let us stay without warning us so we could find out for ourselves. They also didn't offer any refund!
