Thousands pay tribute to World War One regiment of 'fighting horsemen'
Crowds gathered in Sydney to mark the centenary of one of Australia's most well known regiments the 1st Light Horse brigade
Crowds gathered at a parade in Western Sydney on Saturday to mark the centenary of the raising of the 1st Light Horse brigade at the beginning of World War One and to honour one of Australia's most well known regiments.
The parade in Parramatta, a suburb of Sydney included 100 members of the 1st/15th Royal NSW Lancers, also known as the Parramatta lancers.
The Governor-General of Australia, Sir Peter Cosgrove, watched the march along with hundreds of locals.
I think it's really important that a century on from the declaration of war Australians gather in large numbers to pay tribute to the service of their fellow countrymen and women in the Great War and to especially honour the memory of all those we lost, Sir Peter said before the parade began.
The regiment was fitted out in military uniforms from their conflicts from the Boer War, to World War I and beyond.
They also had military vehicles from different periods of the last 100 years.
The spirit of ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) is as relevant today as it was in 1915 when it was forged and is still I believe a very important part of what it is to be Australian, said Ian Hawthorn from the Lancers Museum.
On 4th August 1914, Great Britain declared war on Germany and Australia pledged a force of 20,000 to serve the British forces.
The Brigade was made up mainly from the New South Wales Lancers of Parramatta, the regiment who organised the parade.
