Timelapse: Great Los Angeles Walk 2012
The awesome Michael Schneider with the help of his equally awesome wife Maria has been organizing his annual Great LA Walk ( for years now, and the only two I've missed were the first one in 2006 and last year's. This year's took place on November 17 and started from the Disney Concert Hall. It proceeded out of downtown via First Street to Beverly Boulevard, from Beverly to Virgil, up Virgil to Melrose, across Melrose (with an extended stop at Scoops for ice cream) to Santa Monica Boulevard and all the way to its end at Ocean Avenue. We then enjoyed an after-walk gathering at Wokano in Santa Monica where I sucked up a couple Blue Moons and recuperated a bit for the bus ride back across town to Silver Lake (a different sort of endurance test in and of itself).
As I do regularly with the bike rides I do around town, I decided to use my GoPro camera and try to timelapse the whoooooole daaaaaaaang thiiiiiiiing -- and so I strapped on the cam's chest mount harness and got most of it. Sadly and inexplicably, the camera stopped recording on Melrose from about La Brea to where we stopped for lunch at Ink.Sack a few blocks east of La Cienega. Then it rained on me enough coming through Beverly Hills for precipitation to evetually get into the cam's housing so the last few miles on Santa Monica Boulevard are unfortunately brought to you in glorious Fog-O-Vision. Oh well.
Other than that, the only apology I have left is for this ultra-low-resolution version. The higher-resolution versions I compiled were of massive file sizes the uploads of which YouTube kept aborting with impunity. Eventually I had to go to a 320x240 frame size and cross my fingers that it would upload successfully. It did. Yay.
In the end, what was about 17 miles across town trod over the course of about eight hours is condensed for your seizure-inducing pleasure down to about 11:20 minutes, consisting of roughly 19,000 images snapped. If you watch the whole jumpyjerky thing without going cross-eyed or getting dizzy, you win... wait for it: a copy of the 4.6-gigabyte HD version of this walk. Woo. Hoo.
Thanks to Michael for his usual excellent effort in orchestrating this year's walk and thanks also to the indefatigable Joni Yung for keeping me company from one end of the walk to the other.
