MELBOURNE PENGUIN PARADE TOUR | Backpacking Australia’s East Coast
Our tour continues on from Maru Wildlife Animal Park as we head straight onto Phillip Island. Here we discovered Woolamai Beach, a well known beach for hosting surfing competitions. This beautiful beach makes it an ideal spot to relax. However, I do not recommend swimming here as you can tell the waves are very strong.
We then made a quick stop at the Swan Lake Nature Park where we found ourselves surrounded with nature. We also stopped at the Nobbies Centre, this place is known for seals spotting.
Our final stop was the Penguin Parade. If you’re traveling the east coast Australia I highly recommend you do not miss the parade. There are only a few places in the world where you can watch the little penguins waddling along the beach after a long day of fishing. As Phillip Island has one of the largest colony of these penguins, you are bound to see lots of them.
Our tour cost a total of $104 AUD/pp (includes park fees, transportation and lunch).

Phillip Island is an Australian island located about 140 km (87 mi) south-southeast from Melbourne, Victoria. Named after Arthur Phillip, the first Governor of New South Wales, Phillip Island forms a natural breakwater for the shallow waters of Western Port. It is 26 km (16 mi) long and 9 km (5.6 mi) wide, with an area of about 100 km2 (39 sq mi).[1] It has 97 km (60 mi) of coastline and is part of the Bass Coast Shire.
A 640 m (2,100 ft) concrete bridge (originally a wooden bridge) connects the mainland town San Remo with the island town Newhaven.[1] In the 2011 census the island's permanent population was 9,406,[2] compared to 7,071 in 2001.[3] During the summer, the population swells to 40,000. 60% of the island is farmland devoted to grazing of sheep and cattle. Churchill Island and the area around it served as the location for the 1977 Australian film Summerfield.
Phillip Island is a tourist destination visited by 3.5 million people annually.[1] The Penguin Parade at Phillip Island Nature Park, in which Little Penguins come ashore in groups, attracts visitors from all over the world. They come to see one of the few areas where this species of penguin can be seen.
The island is recognised as having some of the most consistently reliable and varied surf conditions in the country. The island has hosted various surf events in the past, such as the Rip Curl Pro in 2005 and the Roxy Pro Women's Surfing Festival.
On New Year's Eve the island hosts the Pyramid Rock Festival. Other events include the Churchill Island Working Horse and Pioneer Festival.

City Description:
Phillip Island, a popular day trip from Melbourne, lies just off Australia’s southern coast. At Summerland Beach, spectators gather daily at sunset to watch the Penguin Parade, when Little penguins come ashore in groups. The Nobbies outcrop is the viewing site for Seal Rocks, home to a large colony of Australian fur seals. The Phillip Island Circuit is a well-known track for motorcycle and car racing. Cowes, the island’s main town and accommodation hub, has sheltered north coast beaches. Nearby, the Koala Conservation Centre is a sanctuary for free-roaming koalas and wallabies, with an elevated boardwalk and treetop observation points. To the east, Rhyll Inlet is a wetlands reserve with wading birds and boardwalks running through mangroves. A short bridge leads to Churchill Island, a 19th-century farming settlement with traditional gardens. Jutting into the open ocean, rugged Cape Woolamai is home to a colony of short-tailed shearwaters. Attached to the cape, Woolamai Beach is part of the Phillip Island National Surfing Reserve.
Weather and Events:
Small Phillip Island is 90 minutes from Melbourne and receives several million visitors a year. It's busy Nov–Apr, getting packed, with heavy traffic and fully booked accommodation, during summer holidays (Dec–Jan). It's quiet in the cooler months (May–Sep). Its climate is Mediterranean, moderated by a coastal location. Annual events include the month-long Island Summer Carnival (Dec–Jan). The Phillip Island Circuit hosts races throughout the year, including the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix (Oct)
