Forgotten First Obelisk of SriRangaPatnam Mysore Karnataka India
Watch this forgotten first Obelisk of Srirangapatnam Mysore. This war memorial was erected by the surviving officers of the 12th and 74th regiments of the British army. In the memory of officers who died during the fourth Anglo Mysore war against Tipu Sultan on 4th May 1799 at Srirangapatnam. The obelisk was erected in a maidan which was called Sabbal Rani Tittu during Tipu's time.
Though there are no official records mentioning the date of completion of this memorial, it can be seen in the background of the paintings of another Obelisk called Webbs monument which was erected in 1805 by Dewan Purnaiah.
This stone Obelisk is approximately about 30 feet from the ground and is supported by another construction of about 10 feet. At the base, there is a compound wall construction of about 25 square feet and is about 3.5 feet in height.
Stone required for the obelisk was rough cut from a stone quarry near Kengal Koppalu. And was transported in a specially designed carriage for 4 kilometers to this site in SriRangaPatnam.
One can see the specially designed carriage in the picture.
West faced nameplate carries the details of the officers who died on the battlefield. Whereas North, South, and East faced nameplates are empty.
Today, this memorial is in ruins. Due to the lack of government's interest, these monuments of great historical significance are forgotten by the people of the region. As we went in search of this monument we could not find any signboard leading to it. Somehow we reached the place, but we found it difficult to move around freely because of thick growth beside the monument, also the surroundings had an unbearable stench. The fencing put up for the monument is used to secure sheep in the night by the shepherds.
To reach the memorial, from Bangalore-Mysore highway take a left to Gumbaz road, then just before the Kaveri Handicrafts take a right turn and travel about 500 meters. Google Map location is given below.

Travelling on the roads of Srirangapatna - Mandya, Karnataka
Driving on the roads of Srirangapatna. One can see bustling cars, bikes and bullock cart passing by...
Srirangapatna is a town in Mandya district of the Indian state of Karnataka. Located near the city of Mysore, it is of great religious, cultural and historic importance.
Although situated a mere 15 km from Mysore city, Srirangapattana lies in the neighbouring district of Mandya. The entire town is enclosed by the river Kaveri to form a river island, northern half of which is shown in the image to the right. While the main river flows on the eastern side of the island, the Paschima Vaahini segment of the same river flows to its west. The town is easily accessible by train from Bangalore and Mysore and is also well-connected by road, lying as it does just off the Bangalore-Mysore highway. The highway passes through this town and special care was taken to minimize any impact on the monuments.
The town takes its name from the celebrated Ranganathaswamy temple which dominates the town, making Srirangapattana one of the most important Vaishnavite centers of pilgrimage in south India. The temple was built by the Ganga dynasty rulers of the area in the 9th century; the structure was strengthened and improved upon architecturally some three centuries later. Thus, the temple is a medley of the Hoysala and Vijayanagar styles of temple architecture.
Tradition holds that all the islands formed in the Kaveri River are consecrated to Sri Ranganathaswamy, and large temples have been built in very ancient times dedicated to that deity on the three largest islands. These three towns, which constitute the main pilgrimage centers dedicated to Ranganathaswamy, are:
Adi Ranga - at Srirangapattana
Madhya Ranga - at Shivanasamudra
Antya Ranga - at Srirangam
The presence of the Kaveri River is in itself considered auspicious and sanctifying. The Paschima Vaahini section of the Kaveri at Srirangapattana is considered especially sacred; the pious come from far and wide to immerse the ashes of the departed and perform obsequies to their ancestors in these waters.

Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple | Srirangapatna, Mandya, Mysore, India | KSTDC Trip to Mysore
About this Video -
Conducted tour by KARNATAKA STATE TOURISM DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION or KSTDC. Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is one of Karnataka, India's largest and most revered shrines. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, this Temple stands beautifully in Srirangapatna in the Mandya District, a culturally rich town near Mysore city. The name of this town has also been derived from this temple.
Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is about 14 km from Mysore. From Bangalore, this town is at a distance of 125 km. The best time to visit the Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple is during Kotarothsava festival. This festival which is dedicated to Lord Ranganatha is celebrated with great vigor and grandeur.
It is one of the five important pilgrimage sites of Sri Vaishnavism along the river Kaveri for devotees of Ranganatha. These five sacred sites are together known as Pancharanga Kshetrams in Southern India. Since Srirangapatna is the first temple starting from upstream, the deity is known as Adi Ranga.
The temple is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) as a monument of national importance. According to the ASI, the temple is one of considerable antiquity.
The temple has an imposing tower over the entrance gate (gopura) and two large concentric rectangular enclosures (prakara) around its perimeter. The tower over the entrance bears features consistent with Vijayanagara architecture. The entrance to the inner sanctum (garbhagriha) is through multiple columned halls (mantapa). A vestibule (sukhanasi), hall (navaranga or just mantapa) and a front hall (mukhamantapa) are the other main structures in the temple. The roof of the mukhamantapa is decorated with a garland (hara) of miniature decorative towers (called kudu and sala shikharas) whose niches contain stucco images of the god Vishnu.
In the sanctum, the image of Vishnu reclines on the coils of the snake Adisesha, under a canopy formed by the snake's seven hoods, with his consort Lakshmi at his feet.
An inscription at the temple reveals it was first consecrated in 984 A.D. by a local chief called Tirumalaiah, a vassal of the Western Ganga dynasty. In the early 12th century, Hoysala King Vishnuvardhana (r.1108-1152) granted the village of Srirangapatna to the Vaishnava saint Ramanujacharya as an agraharam (place of learning). An inscription of the great Hoysala King Veera Ballala II (1210 A.D.) confirms that additions and renovations were made to the temple at that time.
Timings of Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple are from 07.30 am to 01.00 pm. It again opens for devotees in the evenings from 04.00 pm to 08.00 pm. As on December 2018, no fee for general entry. But Rs. 250 per person for Quick Darshan and Rs. 50 per person for Viswaroopa Seva.

7 Wonders of India: Srirangapatnam
Situated in the Mandya district in the state of Karnataka, South India, Srirangapatnam was once the capital of Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan, the 'Tiger of Mysore'. Situated on the river, this small island houses the imposing Srirangapatnam Fort built in 1454. Tipu Sultan fought his last battle against the British from here and an obelisk marks the spot where he was killed. Standing outside the eastern wall of the fortress is Daria Daulat bagh, a beautiful garden surrounding Tipu's summer palace. The personal belongings and souvenirs connected with the two rulers are at display here in a small museum.

Unknown dam across Lokapavani River Kemmanahalli Nagamagala Tourism Mandya Tourism Karnataka tourism
Exploring unknown dam built across Lokapavani River near Kemmanahalli at Nagamagala Taluk Mandya Karnataka part of Nagamagala Tourism Mandya Tourism Karnataka tourism.
The Lokapavani is a tributary of the river Kaveri. It originates from Honakere, Hobli, Mandya and flows near the Karighatta hills. The river converges with Cauvery at Srirangapatna. The place of convergence is a triveni sangama, where two other tributaries of the Cauvery join Lokapavani.
The river has two anicuts, one at Bolenahalli and another at Uyyanahalli, which are used to divert water from the river for agricultural purposes.
Excess water from Markonahalli dam in Tumakuru, rainwater and water from small streams in nearby hilly regions were the sources of these tributaries. While Veera Vaishnavi was filling up tanks in and around Bellur and Bindiganavile, Lokapavani was the reason for farming prosperity in many villages.

Srirangapatna Fort, শ্রীরঙ্গপত্তন দুর্গ ,
Srirangapatna Fort is a historical fort located in Srirangapatna, the historical capital city in the South Indian state of Karnataka. Built by the Timmanna Nayaka in 1454, the fort came to prominence during the rule of Tipu Sultan. The fort was fully fortified and the architecture was modified with the help of French architects to meet the growing needs of saving against invaders. The river Kaveri surrounds the fort in one of the sides. The fort is protected in the West and Northern directions by river Cauvery. The fort had Lal Mahal and Tipu's palace, which were demolished during the British capture of 1799. There are seven outlets and two dungeons.
