Costa Rica: Puntarenas; Hilton Doubletree
Puntarenas, Costa Rica
Hilton Doubletree
Puntarenas is conveniently located just west of San Jose, Costa Rica right on the beach, making it a popular weekend get a way for the locals.
Downtown Puntarenas is not a place to shy away from. One can get the experience of what life was like in a small fishing village to now a modern port transferring goods all the way to the capital.
Costa Rica is not that old of a country and most of the country lacks that old style spaniard architecture.
Expect for this port where one can find museums telling about the history of the area, the old rail way cars that transported all of the goods from one coastline to the other and one of the oldest churches in Costa Rica.
This church is unique from every other church in Costa Rica because it faces west. Almost all of your Catholic churches are built facing East, the direction in which the sun rises. This custom dates back thousands of years.
However this church breaks all of the rules. Locals say that the church was built facing the way the town was being built, others say their was a fire and for reasons unknown it had to be constructed facing west, while others say it faces the sea to watch the sunsets. For whatever reason, this church and area makes for an interesting trip down memory lane.
Puntarenas is one of the oldest and most important ports in all of Costa Rica, where the history of the country is at its richest.
Natives have been living in the area for over 3,000 years benefiting greatly from the abundant natural resources and fertile fishing grounds.
The old pier and local fish market still play a heavy economic role in the area.
For centuries, Puntarenas was the end of La Carreratera, the old ox and wagon trail where the farmers from the mountains and San Jose would trek their goods, especially coffee beans, down the mountainous trail in long caravans to the port to be exported.
Those colorful wagons that you see in about every Hispanic restaurant throughout the United States are replicas of the carts that were used on this trail.
The Hilton Doubletree offers a quick escape for the people from San Jose to come to and relax for the weekend and holidays. Even though the beaches here are not your crystal clear waters like in other places, there is still a lot to do and see at this port city.
The Doubletree is one of the largest resorts in all of Costa Rica. Four different pools offer people of different ages from children, families, and couples to enjoy themselves in different areas.
Live music is played and multiple pool games are constantly being enjoyed.
Several restaurants offer buffet style food, private reservation dining, to late night snacks.
Beach activities include volleyball, soccer games, kayaking, body surfing, wake boarding and fishing.
The Doubletree has their very own pier that offers and area to get a way from it all to enjoy the birds, sea, boats in the distance and the sunset which can light up the bay in brilliant different colors.
The Hilton Hotels here in Costa Rica have something that is unique from other hotels, all inclusive food and drinks, from natural juices to exotic cocktails.
So what is the Hilton Doubletree? It is one of the largest resorts in Costa Rica offering an escape for the locals from the chaotic schedule of the cities, letting travelers enjoy the historical rich areas of the city while relaxing amongst the many pools and activities that the resort has to offer.

DESTINATION WEDDING VIDEO SHORT FILM // COSTA RICA WEDDING VIDEOGRAPHER
Is there a better way to kick off the 2015 season than with an incredible wedding in the heart of Costa Rica? Surrounded by rows of coffee plants, waterfalls, hot springs, and volcanoes, Melania + Louis's wedding was truly breathtaking. Melania + Louis decided to have their wedding ceremony in the country's oldest Catholic church still in use. The church, Iglesia de San Jose de Orosi, was built in 1743. Later, their festive wedding reception was held at La Casona del Cafetal with an evening backdrop formed by rolling mountains and the pristine Lake Cachí.
Melania + Louis have a deep love for one another and a special relationship and it all started in Kansas when Louis returned from Marine Corps training and Melania was starting her masters at Kansas State University. They met while dancing at Longhorns, a country western bar in Manhattan, Kansas. The next day they bumped into each other at a picnic sponsored by their church. That's where their story began and brings us to the wedding short film playing above (you might also notice a hint of country western dancing too).

Those who stay at Milla La Marìa enjoy complete privacy. The property is gated with a long driveway that extends from the Front Gate to a large circular private parking area located just off the entry to La Casona. The home is surrounded by magnificent gardens and it is the only rental home on the estate grounds.

La Casona:
Upon entering La Casona, one faces a open leisure living Estancia area [by far, the favorite area of the house!] This area acts as a leisure/ living area. It uniquely creates the ambiance with ceramic tile throughout. It is fully furnished with separate seating areas, hammocks, traditional Costa Rican wood-carved rocking chairs, cocktail table, sofas, and a detached guest bathroom.
This area is adjacent to the pool. This unique indoor open terrace has a distinctive Costa Rican décor, yet features many cultural artifacts acquired by the owner as well as a notorious and large collection of wooden sculptures that the owner has patiently carved throughout the years.
Adjoining the leisure area is the kitchen and dining area. This area is the “heart” of the beach house, with a staircase leading to the sleeping quarters (master bedroom and both right and left wings suites and to the third floor loft). The dining room table seats 10. And the kitchen comes fully equipped with a full-size refrigerator, an oven with stove, sink, microwave, toaster oven, blender, coffee maker, plates & utensils, and a pantry.
As one reaches the second floor one faces an open leisure area overlook by a 3rd floor loft.
The 3rd floor open loft provides 2 twin beds complete with a ceiling fan. The stairs accessing this floor are somewhat steep; and we recommend that these sleeping quarters not be reserved for the elderly or small children.
Master bedroom
The master bedroom consists of an extraordinarily spacious bedroom with a king size bed, and a twin bed, Air Conditioning and 2 ceiling fans, a private bathroom, fully furnished with cable TV and internet access.
The Left-Wing of la Casona.

The La Amistad International Park, or in Spanish Parque Internacional La Amistad, formerly the La Amistad National Park, is an Transboundary Protected Area in Latin America, management of which is shared between Costa Rica (Caribbean La Amistad and Pacific La Amistad Conservation Areas) and Panama, following a recommendation by UNESCO after the park's inclusion in the World Heritage Site list.
The park area is equally split between Costa Rica and Panama, as part of the former La Amistad Reserves of the Talamanca mountain range. It covers 401,000 ha of tropical forest and is the largest nature reserve in Central America and together with a 15 km buffer zone it represents a major biodiversity resource at a regional (ca 20% of the regions species diversity) and global level.
This is recognized in its strategic position in the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor and its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its cross-frontier position gives it unique potential to improve bioregional planning. The park's buffer zone includes coffee and beef producers and indigenous subsistence farmers.
A consequence of the difficulty of the terrain, the park is relatively unexplored and the only substantial scientific explorations deep into the park have been led by the Natural History Museum London, INBio and the University of Panama in the last 6 years (2003--2008).
In 2006 the UK's Darwin Initiative funded a three year collaborative project led by the Natural History Museum, London, INBio (Costa Rica) and ANAM (Panama). The aim of which was to generate baseline biodiversity information for the park and a map of the biodiversity. This involved a series of seven multi-disciplinary and international expeditions to remote parts of La Amistad during which over 7,500 plant, 17,000 beetle and 380 herpetological collections were made and deposited in the national collections of Costa Rica and Panama. These expeditions also lead to the discovery of 12 plant species, one dung beetle species, fifteen amphibian and three reptile species new to science.

It's known for its long-standing and stable democracy, and for its highly educated workforce, most of whom speak English. The country spends roughly 6.9% of its budget (2016) on education, compared to a global average of 4.4%. Its economy, once heavily dependent on agriculture, has diversified to include sectors such as finance, corporate services for foreign companies, pharmaceuticals, and ecotourism. Many foreign manufacturing and services companies operate in Costa Rica's Free Trade Zones (FTZ) where they benefit from investment and tax incentives.Costa Rica was facing a market liquidity crisis in 2017 due to a growing debt and budget deficit. By August 2017, the Treasury was having difficulty paying its obligations. Other challenges facing the country in its attempts to improve the economy by increasing foreign investment include a poor infrastructure and a need to improve public sector efficiency.Costa Rica was sparsely inhabited by indigenous peoples before coming under Spanish rule in the 16th century. It remained a peripheral colony of the empire until independence as part of the First Mexican Empire, followed by membership in the United Provinces of Central America, from which it formally declared independence in 1847. Since then, Costa Rica has remained among the most stable, prosperous, and progressive nations in Latin America. Following the brief Costa Rican Civil War, it permanently abolished its army in 1949, becoming one of only a few sovereign nations without a standing army. The country has consistently performed favorably in the Human Development Index (HDI), placing 69th in the world as of 2015, among the highest of any Latin American nation. It has also been cited by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as having attained much higher human development than other countries at the same income levels, with a better record on human development and inequality than the median of the region.Costa Rica also has progressive environmental policies. It is the only country to meet all five UNDP criteria established to measure environmental sustainability. It was ranked 42nd in the world, and third in the Americas, in the 2016 Environmental Performance Index, and was twice ranked the best performing country in the New Economics Foundation's (NEF) Happy Planet Index, which measures environmental sustainability, and was identified by the NEF as the greenest country in the world in 2009. Costa Rica plans to become a carbon-neutral country by 2021. By 2016, 98.1% of its electricity was generated from green sources particularly hydro, solar, geothermal and biomass.

SUMMARY
=======
Nicaragua ( ( listen); Spanish: [nikaˈɾaɣwa]), officially the Republic of Nicaragua (Spanish: República de Nicaragua ), is the largest country in the Central American isthmus, bordered by Honduras to the northwest, the Caribbean to the east, Costa Rica to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the southwest. Managua is the country's capital and largest city and is also the third-largest city in Central America, behind Tegucigalpa and Guatemala City. The multi-ethnic population of six million includes people of indigenous, European, African, and Asian heritage. The main language is Spanish. Native tribes on the Mosquito Coast speak their own languages and English.
Originally inhabited by various indigenous cultures since ancient times, the Spanish Empire conquered the region in the 16th century. Nicaragua gained independence from Spain in 1821. The Mosquito Coast followed a different historical path, with the English colonizing it in the 17th century and later coming under the British rule, as well as some minor Spanish interludes in the 19th century. It became an autonomous territory of Nicaragua in 1860 and the northernmost part of it was later transferred to Honduras in 1960. Since its independence, Nicaragua has undergone periods of political unrest, dictatorship, occupation and fiscal crisis, leading to the Nicaraguan Revolution of the 1960s and 1970s and the Contra War of the 1980s.
The mixture of cultural traditions has generated substantial diversity in folklore, cuisine, music, and literature, particularly the latter given the literary contributions of Nicaraguan poets and writers, such as Rubén Darío. Known as the land of lakes and volcanoes, Nicaragua is also home to the second-largest rainforest of the Americas. The country has set a goal of 90% renewable energy by the year 2020. The biological diversity, warm tropical climate and active volcanoes make Nicaragua an increasingly popular tourist destination.

Guatemala ( ( listen) GWAH-tə-MAH-lə; Spanish: [gwateˈmala]), officially the Republic of Guatemala (Spanish: República de Guatemala), is a country in Central America bordered by Mexico to the north and west, Belize and the Caribbean to the northeast, Honduras to the east, El Salvador to the southeast and the Pacific Ocean to the south. With an estimated population of around 16.6 million, it is the most populated country in Central America. Guatemala is a representative democracy; its capital and largest city is Nueva Guatemala de la Asunción, also known as Guatemala City.
The territory of modern Guatemala once formed the core of the Maya civilization, which extended across Mesoamerica. Most of the country was conquered by the Spanish in the 16th century, becoming part of the viceroyalty of New Spain. Guatemala attained independence in 1821 as part of the Federal Republic of Central America, which dissolved by 1841.
From the mid to late 19th century, Guatemala experienced chronic instability and civil strife. Beginning in the early 20th century, it was ruled by a series of dictators backed by the United Fruit Company and the United States government. In 1944, authoritarian leader Jorge Ubico was overthrown by a pro-democratic military coup, initiating a decade-long revolution that led to sweeping social and economic reforms. A U.S.-backed military coup in 1954 ended the revolution and installed a dictatorship. From 1960 to 1996, Guatemala endured a bloody civil war fought between the US-backed government and leftist rebels, including genocidal massacres of the Maya population perpetrated by the military. Since a United Nations-negotiated peace accord, Guatemala has witnessed both economic growth and successful democratic elections, though it continues to struggle with high rates of poverty, crime, drug trade, and instability. As of 2014, Guatemala ranks 31st of 33 Latin American and Caribbean countries in terms of the Human Development Index.Guatemala's abundance of biologically significant and unique ecosystems includes a large number of endemic species and contributes to Mesoamerica's designation as a biodiversity hotspot.

Nobel Peace Prize Recipient: Rigoberta Menchú Interview
Rigoberta Menchú Tum (born 9 January 1959, Laj Chimel, El Quiché, Guatemala) is an indigenous Guatemalan, of the K'iche' ethnic group. Menchú has dedicated her life to publicizing the plight of Guatemala's indigenous peoples during and after the Guatemalan Civil War (1960--1996), and to promoting indigenous rights in the country. She received the 1992 Nobel Peace Prize and Prince of Asturias Award in 1998. She is the subject of the testimonial biography I, Rigoberta Menchú (1983) and the author of the autobiographical work, Crossing Borders.
Menchú is a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador. She has also become a figure in indigenous political parties and ran for President of Guatemala in 2007.
Menchú received a primary-school education as a student at several Catholic boarding schools. After leaving school, she worked as an activist campaigning against human rights violations committed by the Guatemalan armed forces during the country's civil war, which lasted from 1960 to 1996.
Her father, Vicente Menchú was a member of the guerrilla movement Guerrilla Army of the Poor and died in 1980 during the Burning of the Spanish Embassy. In 1981, Rigoberta Menchú escaped to Mexico. In 1982, she narrated a book about her life to Venezuelan author and anthropologist Elizabeth Burgos, Me llamo Rigoberta Menchú y así me nació la conciencia (My Name is Rigoberta Menchu and this is how my Conscience was Born), which was translated into five other languages including English and French. The book made her an international icon at the time of the ongoing conflict in Guatemala.
Since the Guatemalan Civil War ended, Menchú has campaigned to have members of the Guatemalan political and military establishment tried in Spanish courts. In 1999 she filed a complaint before a court in Spain because prosecutions of crimes committed during the civil war are practically impossible in Guatemala. These attempts stalled as the Spanish courts determined that the plaintiffs had not yet exhausted all possibility of seeking justice through the legal system of Guatemala. On 23 December 2006, Spain called for the extradition from Guatemala of seven former members of Guatemala's government on charges of genocide and torture. These include former military rulers Efraín Ríos Montt and Óscar Mejía. Spain's highest court ruled that cases of genocide committed abroad could be judged in Spain, even if no Spanish citizens have been involved. In addition to the deaths of Spanish citizens, the most serious charges include genocide against the Mayan people of Guatemala.
Menchú has become involved in the Indian pharmaceutical industry as president of the company Salud para Todos (Health for All) and the company Farmacias Similares, with the goal of offering low-cost generic medicines. She served as presidential goodwill ambassador for the 1996 peace accords.
In 2006, Menchú was one of the founders of the Nobel Women's Initiative along with sister Nobel Peace Laureates Jody Williams, Shirin Ebadi, Wangari Maathai, Betty Williams and Mairead Corrigan Maguire. Six women representing North America and South America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa decided to bring together their experiences in a united effort for peace with justice and equality. It is the goal of the Nobel Women's Initiative to help strengthen work being done in support of women's rights around the world.
She is a member of PeaceJam, an organization whose mission is to create young leaders committed to positive change in themselves, their communities and the world through the inspiration of Nobel Peace Laureates who pass on the spirit, skills, and wisdom they embody.. She travels around the world speaking to youth through PeaceJam conferences.
Rigoberta Menchú is also a member of the Fondation Chirac's honour committee, ever since the foundation was launched in 2008 by former French president Jacques Chirac in order to promote world peace.
