New Tourism Video Highlights Decatur's African-American Heritage
Decatur, Ala. -- The Decatur/Morgan County Convention & Visitors Bureau (DMCCVB) has released a new video featuring noteworthy African-Americans and their contributions to the city of Decatur in the areas of religion, education, employment, military, athletics, and political and social change. Named after the patriotic hymn penned by the Johnson brothers as part of the celebration of Abraham Lincoln's birthday in 1900, Lift Every Voice and Sing chronicles the many stories and experiences of former slaves, quasi-free slaves, civic leaders, and educational visionaries from pre-Civil War days to today's leaders who have made a difference with their voice and hard work.
Noted African-Americans can be traced back prior to the Civil War when area slaves paid for the construction of their own house of worship. Spanning over 180 years, the video highlights important milestones including the steps taken to an equal and quality education for all and the publishing of the town's first African-American newspaper. It also documents the transition for African-Americans from a predominately agricultural workforce into skilled positions, as well as the many struggles which led to basic rights enjoyed by all today, such as freedom of religion, the right to a jury of one's peers, and the right to vote.
Our goal for the video is to educate our citizens and visitors on those African-Americans who paved the way for a better life for future generations to embrace and enjoy, said Tami Reist, president of the Decatur/Morgan County Convention and Visitors Bureau. It is important to document the city's heritage and pay tribute to these inspiring leaders, yet our history is somewhat lacking as it relates to the role of African-Americans and their contributions. The video will play a key role in preserving the stories and experiences while showing how far we have come as a community.
Lift Every Voice and Sing was developed and produced by Freedom Light Productions of Decatur, Ala. Contributing to the video include Melinda Dunn of Decatur Parks and Recreation, John Allison of the Morgan County Archives, Wes Torain, and local historians Rev. Wylheme H. Ragland, Peggy Allen Towns, and Phil Wirey.
The video may be viewed on the DMCCVB website at decaturcvb.org under Videos, or on the Alabama Tourism Department's website at alabama.travel. For more information, call 800.524.6181.

On Location: The Art of Jessica Hales (by Cedar Ridge Middle School, Decatur, AL)
Besides her work as an artist, art teacher, and mother, Jessica Hales’ exploits have included bedding design for a Turkish company, marathon running, military uniform design, and championing a business in Iraq that specialized in delivering American supply shipments to dangerous locations in the field. Watch as she demonstrates her unusual oil painting technique in painting figures upside-down and with both hands and as she shares the philosophy she has gained about the universality of human nature from her work and travels around the world.
While Jessica is an accomplished painter; she is also a CEO, Turkish bedding designer, and loving mother to two Decatur Middle students. Her adventure for life and creative style of painting has taken her around the world to the far Middle East and beyond. Her unique talents, coupled with her deep connections to worldly cultures, make her a fantastic subject for our documentary.
Painting is the art of applying different kinds of paint (acrylic, oil pastel, watercolor, etc.) and other mediums to a surface. It is a visual art form that allows artists to express their ideas or emotions, tell a story, document reality as they see it, or simply create work they find visually pleasing. Jessica’s unusual painting style is accomplished both upside down and with two hands!
Decatur, Alabama, a small city lying on the banks of the Tennessee River, has a vibrant arts and business environment that reflects its grand history as well as its emerging reputation as a high-tech center. A family-friendly community of some 50,000 people, Decatur hosts numerous arts organizations is home to companies such as 3M, United Launch Alliance, Daikan, Toray, and GE. City residents are also proud of the historic architecture that has been carefully preserved, including the 173 year-old, Old State Bank; Alabama’s oldest opera house, the Cotaco Opera House; and the largest Victorian-era home district in Alabama.
From 2008-2010, nineteen schools from across the United States created videos as part of the On Location program. A media studio on wheels visited each school for two weeks and provided students the gear and training to tell the story of the arts in their community.
From go-go music in Washington DC, to gullah woodburning in Beaufort, South Carolina, to modern dance in Berkley, Michigan, the arts of a community can be as different as it's geography.
The Kennedy Center traveled the country to help students tell the story of the arts in their community, and the result is a video collection reflecting a rich diversity of local artists and art forms across the United States.
The videos in this series were scripted, produced and edited by students using professional equipment, under the supervision of Kennedy Center teaching artists.
Alabama State Capitol, Montgomery, Alabama, USA (04888)
Alabama State Capitol, Montgomery, Alabama, USA
The Alabama State Capitol, listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the First Confederate Capitol, is the state capitol building for Alabama. It is located on Capitol Hill, originally Goat Hill, in Montgomery. It was declared a National Historic Landmark on December 19, 1960.
Alabama has had five political capitals during its history. The first was the territorial capital in St. Stephens in 1817, followed by the state convention in Huntsville in 1819, then the first permanent capital in Cahaba in 1820. It was then moved to Tuscaloosa in 1826, until coming to rest in Montgomery in 1846. The current structure is the state's fourth purpose-built capitol building, with the first at Cahaba, the second at Tuscaloosa, and the last two in Montgomery. The first capitol building in Montgomery, located where the current building stands, burned after only two years. The current building was completed in 1851, although additional wings were added over the course of the following 140 years.
The current capitol building temporarily served as the Confederate Capitol while Montgomery served as the first political capital of the Confederate States of America in 1861, before being moved to Richmond, Virginia. Meeting in the Senate Chamber, the Provisional Constitution of the Confederate States was drawn up by the Montgomery Convention on February 4, 1861. The convention also adopted the Permanent Constitution here on March 11, 1861.Over one hundred years later the third Selma to Montgomery march ended at the front marble staircase of the Capitol, with the marches and events surrounding them directly leading to the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Architecturally, the building is Greek Revival in style with some Beaux-Arts influences. The central core of the building, as well as the east wing to the rear of the structure, is three-stories over a below-grade basement. The north and south wings are two-stories over a raised basement. The front facade that is seen today is approximately 350 feet (110 m) wide and 119 feet (36 m) tall from ground level to the top of the lantern on the dome.

First National Bank
St. Cloud's First National Bank opened in 1910. This narrow, two story Masonry Vernacular structure was built from locally produced sand brick, wood beams, and concrete block. St. Cloud residents subscribed over $100,000 of capital stock, twice as much as required by the United States Comptroller. It was the only national bank in the county, and the level of capital stock raised was unprecedented. In 1911, the bank issued $10 notes with a picture of the bank’s first president, William H. Lynn. Though the bank failed in December 1917, the building remained an important part of downtown St. Cloud. Many diverse community organizations and businesses were housed in the building, including the People's Bank of St. Cloud in 1919, the US. Spanish War Veterans Headquarters in 1934, and the Golden Age Club in 1970. The building was purchased in 1992 by the Chamber of Commerce, which represents over 500 local businesses, and serves as its headquarters. In 1997, the St. Cloud Chamber was awarded a state historic preservation grant to restore the building with support from Florida Secretary of State Sandra Mortham. Following its restoration, the building has also served as a museum devoted to St. Cloud history.
48 Hours in Decatur, Alabama: Possibly Alabama's Most Underrated City??? (Extended Version)
We went to Decatur, AL, over the Memorial Day weekend, which is the ideal weekend to see what this underrated city has to offer. Friday night, we went to the entirely free Daikin Festival. Saturday morning, we went to the Alabama Jubilee to watch the hot air balloon race. Unfortunately, it was already too hot for the balloons to fly. After that, we walked through the arts and crafts fair and the car show. Since we were on that side of Point Mallard, we waked down the biking and hiking trail. Later, we went to Rhodes Ferry Park and Delano Park, where the kids played in the splash pad. Saturday evening, we went back to the Alabama Jubilee to watch the hot air balloon glow. Then Sunday, we took in a few more sights, before heading back home.
