A Walking tour of Neuchatel, Switzerland
On my first day in Neuchatel, I decided to take a walking tour of the older part of the city, including the citadel with a large church and chateau. There were some surprises along the way: The hotel de DuPeyrou, with its formal vegetable gardens, The statue of William Farrell thrusting a Bible in the face of the Church, and the magnificent lakeshore. You might also notice the street painted with the Swiss flag. This film was primarily made with stills but there is one video clip. I apologize for not knowing the full credits for the music.
????????【4K】Andermatt • Walking in Switzerland
Andermatt is a mountain village and municipality in the canton of Uri in Switzerland. At an altitude of 1437 meters above sea level, Andermatt is located at the center of the Saint-Gotthard Massif and the historical center cross of north-south and east-west traverses of Switzerland. It is some 28 km south of Altdorf, the capital of Uri.
Archaeological finds dating back to 4000 BC indicate that the Ursern was populated already in the Neolithic period. During Roman times this Alpine valley was probably inhabited by some Helvetic Celtic tribes. However, the origins of Andermatt can only be traced back to Alemannic tribes, the Walsers, who established settlements in the area, where the current town of Andermatt is situated.
The parish of Andermatt was not mentioned until the year of 1203 AD, serving as a tenure to the Benedictine Disentis Abbey. This first mention refers to it as de Prato. In 1290 it was mentioned as A der Matte.[6] In 1649, with the emergence of an independent Swiss Confederation, the ecclesiastical rights of the Monastery Disentis were revoked in favour of civil legislation.
In the Flight of the Earls, Irish earls lost a fortune of gold down at the Devil's Bridge crossing ravine on St Patrick's Day in 1608. It has never been recovered and is known as the Lost Treasure of the St Gotthard Pass.[7]
Nearby Schöllenen Gorge is the site of a memorial commemorating the 1799 campaign of the Russian general Alexander Suvorov.
Between 1818-1831 the nearby St Gotthard Pass was made accessible to stagecoaches. As the last resort before the pass, Andermatt flourished economically and became a popular spa town.
The opening, in 1881, of the St Gotthard railway tunnel, however, reverted its fortunes as the tunnel runs immediately beneath the town, connecting the Central Swiss town Göschenen with Airolo in Ticino. Some Andermattians, who worked on the tunnel were killed during its construction. A strike by the tunnel workers, furthermore, was put down through the use of military force killing a further four workers.
Since 1885 AD Andermatt has been converted into a garrison town of the Swiss Federal Army. Here the infrastructure for the High Command of the Swiss Federal Army in an event of war was built. Today it is location of a Training Centre of the Swiss army.
Plans to build a series of reservoirs in the valley of Andermatt, the Ursern, were voted down by the locals and a huge reservoir was built instead in the next valley called the Göschenertal.[citation needed]
Several avalanches, in particular in the winter of 1951 and 1975 have caused havoc in some residential areas of Andermatt killing the inhabitants of the houses affected.[citation needed]
By the 1930s the town's income from tourism had seriously declined, and many of the Ursental's hotels were abandoned or changed usage. The Grand Hotel Bellevue, which was built by the aristocratic Müller family from neighbouring Hospental (who at one time or another owned many other hotels nearby including the Hotel Furkablick and Hotel Furka Passhöhe - as well as hotels in Flüelen, Alpnachstad, Herisau and Neuchâtel) was converted in the 1970s into apartments, but by 1990 had been abandoned and was demolished with explosives. By the turn of the 21st century, as an alternative to the expensive skiing resorts in the Grisons (Graubünden) at St Moritz and Gstaad, Andermatt's fortunes again revived and the town has seen considerable expansion and is currently undergoing much speculative building.

Neuchatel, Switzerland
Video of this pretty Swiss Town.
Beautiful Neuchâtel Switzerland! Come Discover It With Us Today!
Today we experience the Belle Epoque at its best in Neuchâtel, the jewel in the crown of its eponymous lake.
It's an attractive medieval waterfront city with a rich history dating back to 13,000 BC and a delightful Old Castle that gave its name to the town as well as the lake.
The castle was rebuilt in the 15th and 17th century, and it's still being used as the seat of cantonal government.
We also visited the Collégiale church and witnessed a graceful example of an early Gothic.
Finally we got to enjoy the stunning lake view from a ginormous bench and we even got to see the highest peak of the Alps across the lake.

????????【4K】Château de Chillon • Walking Switzerland • Chillon Castle [Virtual Walking Tour]
Chillon Castle is located on a rock on the banks of Lake Geneva. The water castle is the most visited historic building in Switzerland [also touristic]. For nearly four centuries Chillon was the residence and profitable toll station of the Counts of Savoy.
In its current state, the Castle of Chillon is the result of several centuries of constant building, adaptations, renovations and restorations.
Excavations carried out from the end of the 19th century, in particular by the archeologist Albert Naef (1862-1936), affirm that this site has been occupied since the Bronze Age.
The rocky island on which the castle is built, was both a natural protection and a strategic location to control the passage between northern and southern Europe.
The history of the castle was influenced by three major periods:
The first written mention of the castle appears in 1150. At that time, the Counts of Savoy controlled the fort, as well as the path between the lake and the mountains.
From the 13th century onwards, the castle was extended, and under Pierre II of Savoy, it became the summer residence of the Counts.
As early as 1150, the Counts of Savoy controlled the fort, as well as the path between the lake and the mountains, which gave them a strategic location on the route leading from the north to the south.
In the 13th century, the Counts furthered their conquests of the territory of Vaud until their domination was extended over approximately two-thirds of the territory which makes up today’s French-speaking Switzerland. The Chillon Castle was extended at that time, in particular under Pierre II of Savoy who transformed it into a summer residence for the Counts. The Counts did not live in Chillon year-round as they moved around to govern and stay close to their subjects. Nevertheless, a castellan bailiff stayed in the castle at all seasons to take care of affairs.
Little by little, the Chillon Castle started to be neglected as the court of Savoy favored other castles. But from 1536 on, the Bernese brought the fort back to life.
The Swiss, or more precisely, the Bernese, conquered the Pays de Vaud. The conquest was completed once the Bernese took-over the Chillon Castle in 1536. For more than 260 years, the castle retained its role as a fortress, arsenal, and prison.
After a three-week siege, the Bernese finally entered the fortress. On March 29th, 1536, their conquest of the Pays de Vaud was completed as they took over the castle of Chillon. The Bernese divided the Pays de Vaud into twelve bailliages, and Chillon became the administrative center for the bailliage of Vevey.
Under the Counts of Savoy, the castle was divided into two parts, one for the castellan bailiff, and the other for the Counts, when they resided at Chillon. This division was no longer useful, and the Bernese took possession of all the space in the castle. Concerning the defensive aspects, the fortress was adapted to the then new firearms.
In 1733, the bailiffs left the castle, which had become isolated and uncomfortable, and moved on to a more modern residence in Vevey.
In 1798, at the time of the Vaudois Revolution, the Bernese left the castle, which became the property of the Canton of Vaud upon its foundation in 1803.
A major restoration campaign was launched at the end of the 19th century and is still ongoing.
The patriots of Vevey and Montreux occupied the fortress in January 1798. The castle became national property during the Vaudois Revolution, and belongs since then to the Canton of Vaud, from the date of its foundation in 1803. This old building was first used to stock weapons and ammunitions, and as a State prison. Thus, the first visitors to the castle would come across prisoners…
The medieval fortress attracted the Romantics. During his visit in 1816, Lord Byron, the British poet, found inspiration in the story of Chillon inmate François Bonivard to write his poem The Prisoner of Chillon, which made the castle famous. Many other artists were fascinated by Chillon and the landscape over which it towers.
At the end of the 19th century, cantonal archeologist Albert Naef was in charge of the restoration of the castle. Restoration campaigns are still ongoing nowadays.

Walk the talk in Fribourg old town Switzerland
Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland
Walk through the streets of Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland in this video. You will get a feel for this historic and important spa resort town located in Kanton Vaud near Lake Neuchâtel. While many Swiss towns containing lakes are usually organized around the lake, Yverdon is different. The town is about half an hour from the lake shores. However, the city was the recipient of the Wakker Prize in 2009 for efforts they made to connect the old town with the lake.
In addition to lake Neuchâtel, the natural features of the Jura mountains, Orbe plains, and the Brove hills define this town’s charm. They also create an idyllic setting for the thermal-spas (often recognized as Switzerland’s most important spas). These thermal springs are renowned for their high content of magnesium and Sulphur, as well as a beautifully renovated spa facilities and attached 4 star hotel. These structures are built upon historic Roman spas that recognized the healing benefits of these springs nearly 6000 years earlier.
Historically, Yverdon held significance in for the Roman Empire as it connected the Rhone and Rhine basins as well as the Rhone and the Danube and offered control over major routes like the Geneva-Avenches. The Roman Castrum (meaning strong hold) was a naval and military base designed to offer defense for the Roman Empire’ northeaster board along the Rhine. It featured huge ramparts and 15 masonry towers that spanned over the 5 acers. These features made Yverdon a civic center as well as a resort town and defense strategy. Barbarians conquered Italy in the 5th centrury and endangered Rome in the process. Because of this threat the Yverdon camp had to be abandoned. The residents of Eburodunum, who lived on the outskirts of the camp, overtook the Castrum.
If you visit Yverdon, you will not have shortage of things to do. There are a number of unusual museums to visit including, the Europe’s first Sifi Museum, a Swiss fashion museum, and a museum honoring Swiss pedagogue Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi who was connected to Jean-Jaques Rosseau. Additionally, as you will see in this video a few castles to tour including Savoy Castle (dating from the 14th century, a prominent landmark in the old town), Palace Pestalozzi, Yverdon Castle, Palace d’ armes, and Theater Benno Besson. In the summer you can also enjoy water sports and beautiful hiking.
