Conscious Activist #4 - Counterfeit Olive Oil in Every Home
Aloha Sangha!
Today I'm coming to you with an investigative report regarding counterfeit EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL. I had an experience last week using olive oil to make some salad dressing that got my attention. During the process of making the dressing I noticed that the olive oil didn't smell or taste anything like olive oil.
Immediately I wondered to myself... could it be possible that this olive oil isn't in fact olive oil?
After asking myself that question I decided that I was going to do some research and find out if anyone else had noticed this odd tasting mystery oil which was obviously not pure extra virgin olive oil.
I was surprised and delighted to find plenty of information on the internet but at the same time it was a bit discouraging because the majority of the reports that I found confirmed my suspicions. As it turns out Sangha, the majority of imported olive oil from the likes of Italy, Spain, Greece, etc, are counterfeit.
When I say counterfeit what that means is 69% of the imported olive oils that come into California (and probably the rest of the country) do not meet the standards set in place by the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) and IOC (International Olive Council).
The USDA and IOC have set in place a number of criteria for olive oils to be labeled EXTRA VIRGIN be they domestic or imported the criteria are the same.
I found a very detailed report online in the form of a .pdf file by UC Davis Olive Oil Chemistry Laboratory in collaboration with the Australian Oils Research Laboratory. The findings that these institutions have found with regard to the quality and content of extra virgin olive oil are sure to make you ask yourself the question as I did... how the heck does something like this happen?
Either the olive oils are extremely old, oxidized and have been sitting out too long, they were made with below standard low-quality olives or worst case the oils have been cut with other oils like peanut oil, soy oil or canola oil for example.
I invite you all to read the report it is now available on the Raw Sangha website please click the following link to download the .pdf file.
Once your read the facts for yourself please be sure to pass on this information. Tell you're friends, family and co-workers about it, chances are they have this counterfeit olive oil already in their home.
The solution is to buy local California based company olive oils. Even if you live in another part of the country if you buy olive oils produced in California you have a 90% chance it actually meets the standard set by the USDA to be labeled EXTRA VIRGIN.
Again this is another example how if we buy locally it's more sustainable and helps to support our local economy.
Okay that's it for today, please remember to read the .pdf file and pass on this information... be active and help spread the info throughout your communities. If we can get people aware and awake then maybe they'll stop buying these counterfeit products and the stores will stop carrying them.
Thank you for tuning in to Raw Sangha.
Namaste,
-BE :-)

Tourists Trickle Back to California Wine Country
(14 Nov 2017) TOURISTS BOARD THE NAPA VALLEY WINE TRAIN, HEADING TO SEE THE VINEYARDS AND TASTING ROOMS OF CALIFORNIA WINE COUNTRY.
SOUNDBITE (English) Jim Kilpatrick, tourist from Texas
The train is running. The wine is flowing. And we're on our way.
THE TOURISTS ARE A WELCOME SIGHT FOR A REGION STILL RECOVERING FROM DEVASTATING WILDFIRES THAT SHUT DOWN WINERIES, HOTELS AND RESTAURANTS DURING THEIR BUSIEST MONTH.
SOUNDBITE (English) Tanya Thomas, wine country tourist
In spite of the local disasters that have occurred in the area, I've decided to come support Napa.
THE WILDFIRE OUTBREAK IN EARLY OCTOBER KILLED MORE THAN 40 PEOPLE AND DESTROYED NEARLY 9,000 HOMES AND OTHER BUILDINGS IN NAPA AND SONOMA COUNTIES.
DESPITE WIDESPREAD DEVASTATION, ONLY A SMALL NUMBER OF THE REGION'S 1,200 WINERIES WERE BADLY DAMAGED.
AND THERE WAS LITTLE IMPACT TO WINE PRODUCTION SINCE 90 PERCENT OF THE GRAPES WERE PICKED BEFORE THE FIRES BROKE OUT.
SOUNDBITE (English) Michael Honig, chairman of Napa Valley Vintners
No wineries really lost much wine from this vintage. It was really more of the impact the fires had on people's psyches. They thought the Napa Valley was burning and they canceled their trips. That's really been the most impact for us.
AN IMPACT FELT THROUGHOUT WINE COUNTY. FEWER TOURISTS ARE VISITING THE REGION'S WINERIES, INCLUDING MICHAEL HONIG'S.
HOTELS HAVE SEEN A STEEP DECLINE IN GUESTS. MANY ROOMS ARE NOW FILLED WITH FIRE EVACUEES AND EMERGENCY RESPONDERS WHO PAY DISCOUNTED RATES.
SOUNDBITE (English) Bill Blum, manager, MacArthur Place Hotel & Spa
Spend money at our local restaurants and shops. Buy Sonoma wine. Stay at our hotels. That's really one of the best ways you can really help.
FRANK FIGONE SAYS HIS OLIVE OIL BUSINESS WAS SHUT DOWN FOR NINE DAYS. MANY OF HIS CLIENTS' OLIVE ORCHARDS WERE DESTROYED. AND HIS RETAIL SHOP IS SEEING A LOT LESS FOOT TRAFFIC.
SOUNDBITE (English) Frank Figone, owner of Figone's Olive Oil Co.
We always save for the rainy day. But in this case we're not really saving for firestorms. And it's had a tremendous financial impact on us.
HIGHER-END RESTAURANTS SUCH SONOMA'S CAFE LA HAYE ARE ALSO FEELING SQUEEZED BY THE LOSS OF OUT-OF-TOWN VISITORS.
SOUNDBITE (English) Saul Gropman, owner of Cafe La Haye
Those people that lost their homes still need their incomes, so tourism is a way to help those fire victims. And nobody should be afraid to visit and see the beauty that surrounds us here.'
IT'S A MESSAGE THAT WINE COUNTRY IS SPREADING AS THEY TRY TO REBOUND WITH A STRONG HOLIDAY SEASON.

Castello di Amorosa video text:
Today I’m in Calistoga California at the Castello di Amorosa, the Napa Castle Winery, which is an authentic castle, built over 14 years by Dario Sattui and his crew. Each stone was brought over from Italy and I am so excited, because the last time that I was here it hadn’t been completed, look at the mote and the gargoyle. Thru WineryFinderApp I was able to find out all of the information I needed about the Castello di Amorosa and get a discount coupon on my wine tasting & tour, which was super cool. So we are going down into the dungeon and we are going to see the collection of torture devices and the torture chamber, which Dario has collected over the years and I am so excited I can’t wait. See you later, bye.

More info at -- A former D.A. & a former cop explain California knives laws. What knives are always illegal to carry? What knives may be carried, but only openly on a sheath? And what knives may be possessed openly or concealed? What are the penalties -- misdemeanor or felony -- if you get arrested and charged with unlawful knife possession?
We answer all of these questions, with reference to switchblades, dirks and daggers, pocket knives, utility knives, Swiss army knives, gravity knives, spring loaded knives and others.

The Cruise of the Snark Audiobook by Jack London | Full Audiobook with subtitles
The Cruise of the Snark (1913) is a memoir of Jack and Charmian London's 1907-1909 voyage across the Pacific. His descriptions of surf-riding, which he dubbed a royal sport, helped introduce it to and popularize it with the mainland. London writes: Through the white crest of a breaker suddenly appears a dark figure, erect, a man-fish or a sea-god, on the very forward face of the crest where the top falls over and down, driving in toward shore, buried to his loins in smoking spray, caught up by the sea and flung landward, bodily, a quarter of a mile. It is a Kanaka on a surf-board. And I know that when I have finished these lines I shall be out in that riot of colour and pounding surf, trying to bit those breakers even as he, and failing as he never failed, but living life as the best of us may live it.
