Amman-Jordan, One Of The Oldest Cities In The World.
Amman, the modern and ancient capital of Jordan, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the World. The city's modern buildings blend with the remnants of ancient civilizations. The profusion of gleaming white houses, kebab stalls with roasting meat, and tiny cafes where rich Arabian coffee is sipped in the afternoon sunshine, conjure a mood straight from a thousand and one nights .
Recent excavations have uncovered homes and towers believed to have been built during the Stone Age with many references to it in the Bible.
Amman was known in the Old Testament as Rabbath-Ammon, the capital of the Ammonites around 1200 BC, it was also referred to as the City of Waters.
In Greco-Roman times in the 3rd century BC, the City was renamed Philadelphia (Greek for The Brotherhood Love) after the Ptolemaic ruler Philadelphus (283-246 BC). The City later came under Seleucid as well as Nabataean rule until the Roman General Pompey annexed Syria and made Philadelphia part of the Decapolis League - a loose alliance of ten free city-states, bound by powerful commercial, political, and cultural interests under overall allegiance to Rome.
Under the influence of the Roman culture, Philadelphia was reconstructed in typically grand Roman style with colonnaded streets, baths, an Amphitheater, and impressive public buildings.
During the Byzantine period, Philadelphia was the seat of a Christian Bishop, and therefore several churches were built. The city declined somewhat until the year 635 AD. As Islam spread northwards from the Arabian Peninsula, the land became part of its domain. Its original Semitic name Ammon or Amman was returned to it.
Amman's modern history began in the late 19th Century, when the Ottomans resettled a colony of Circassian emigrants in 1878. As the Great Arab Revolt progressed and the State of Transjordan was established, Emir Abdullah ibn Al-Hussein founder of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan made Amman his capital in 1921. Since then, Amman has grown rapidly into a modern, thriving metropolis of well over two million people.

Amman, the capital of Jordan, is a fascinating city of contrasts -- a unique blend of old and new, ideally situated on a hilly area between the desert and the fertile Jordan Valley. In the commercial heart of the city, ultra-modern buildings, hotels, smart restaurants, art galleries and boutiques rub shoulders comfortably with traditional coffee shops and tiny artisans' workshops. Everywhere there is evidence of the city's much older past. Due to the city's modern-day prosperity and temperate climate, almost half of Jordan's population is concentrated in the Amman area. The residential suburbs consist of mainly tree-lined streets and avenues flanked by elegant, almost uniformly white houses in accordance with a municipal law, which states that all buildings must be faced with local stone.

Part II: Underground Muscle Cars drifting in Amman, Jordan
In the Kingdom of Jordan where virtually all artistic, political, and other forms of expression are often discouraged or muted, citizens often devise novel ways of entertaining themselves. This is particularly true amongst the youth who have, during the summers of 2008-9, developed an underground movement involving muscle cars. Every Friday after the evening (Maghrib) prayers, the initiated receive text messages about the location of the ijtima' (meeting), a euphemism for the muscle car competition. All participants are given between 1-2 minutes to skid out and perform other tricks with the crowd deciding the champion after each meeting each week. This video is from a recent meeting that took place in the hills 20 minutes outside of Amman recently.

I took many tabla lessons at Sandy Music located next to the 2nd circle near downtown. When I lived downtown in a hostel I walked 1 mile to Sandy Music, sometimes twice a day. For the rest of my Amman stay I was in Nefertiti hotel, 2.1 miles from Sandy Music. You see a lot when you walk. There were numerous times I would leave Sandy Music around 7:30 to 8:00pm in total dark. My hotel was 2.1 miles away. I was often in poorly lit areas.
Despite all of the people I would encounter, I never felt in danger. I was never threatened. I was never worried. I am sorry that I can’t say the same regarding Houston, Texas.
Is it safe to travel in Jordan?
I purchased a bullet proof shield for my pack before leaving the states. Guaranteed to stop almost any pistol bullet from a .45 to a .357 sig. I never used this. I thought I would wear a pack everywhere I went.
There was no need. Never. None.
I have never felt so safe or so welcome anyplace in my life. Jordanians love America and they love Americans. Many dream of living in the United States.
My hotel manager has 2 brothers in America, one in Phoenix and the other in California. A 3rd one died in the United States. He has a brother living and working in the Netherlands and another in Germany. He has one other brother who lives in Amman.
I met a police officer with a brother in Chicago and his parents live with him. I met a bedouin in Petra who has an uncle teaching school in Chicago. A guide that I hired, a retired police captain has a son who moved to the United States 3 months ago and married an American Palestinian in Michigan.
Junior High and High School boys wanted to shake my hand when they learned I was from America. You are safe. You are totally safe. I walked the streets of Amman at midnight, at 1am, at 2am. You will never feel on edge. People will greet you with ‘welcome’.
I honestly believe that if every American would spend a month of more in Jordan, they will be better people when they return to the United States and it would change our country for the better. Jordan is a huge mix of culture and religion. There is no anger or animosity towards religion or any political party. Unlike America, they never stopped following the golden rule.
Treat others the way you want to be treated.
It seems to work very well here.

Ancient Ruins at Jerash, Jordan (near Amman)
The name, Jerash, was pronounced Gerasa or Gerash in the times of the Alexandrian Greeks. The name has the same root as the word Geriatric, and was apparently a sort of retirement community for aging generals of Alexander's army. These magnificent remains were the marketplace, general meeting places, and some residences during that era. Much of the site remains to be excavated.
The site includes the Arch of Hadrian, Oval Forum, Cardo Maximus, Temple of Artemis, amphitheaters, a hippodrome, and ancient floor mosaics.
This is one of the best preserved examples of ancient greek ruins I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot of ancient ruins. I highly recommend visiting this site if you are doing a tour of the Amman area of Jordan, and bring your good camera. Happy traveling!

WORLD TRAVELLER 35 ~ Ending up in AMMAN, JORDAN
Travel vlog from my first ever solo travelling trip around the world (from many years ago, hence the 4:3 ratio, and the significantly substandard editing. Adds to the atmosphere in my view :D). If you get the opportunity to travel, or if you're in two minds, just do it! It's amazing!
Having just spent a tiring and exceptionally frustrating day and night in Mumbai airport, due to being unable to board a flight to Dubai, I end up in Amman, Jordan. Exploring the parliament, Raghadan Flagpole, the Amman Citadel and other areas of Amman. Then taking a Jett coach to Petra.
My itinerary included:
CANADA, Toronto, Montreal.
UNITED STATES of AMERICA, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles.
PERU, Lima, Cusco, The Inca Trail, Machu Picchu.
JAPAN, Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Itsukushima (Miyajima), Osaka.
THAILAND, Bangkok, Koh Samui, Ko Pha Ngan (Full Moon Party). INDIA, Mumbai, Agra, Jaipur, Dehli.
JORDAN, Amman, Petra.
EGYPT, Cairo and Luxor.
As Middle Eastern cities go, Amman is a relative youth, and though it lacks the storied history and thrilling architectural tapestry of other regional capitals, there’s plenty here to encourage you to linger awhile before making for Petra, the Dead Sea or Wadi Rum. In fact, Amman is one of the easiest cities in which to enjoy the Middle East experience.
