A Visit To Cardiff Bay In The Capital Of Wales
Cardiff Bay waterfront and barrage lies to the south of the Welsh Capital.
Looking at the grasslands and then moving on to Mermaid Quay with its bars and restaurants, the old Pierhead Building and the Wales Millennium Centre, a performing arts centre.
Cardiff Bay is also the home the the ‘Senedd’ The National Assembly for #Wales.
Taking a boat trip around the old docks and cranes of Cardiff Bay on the open boat ‘Daffodil’. The bay holds freshwater and was formed by the construction of the Cardiff Bay Barrage.
The old white Norwegian Church is now an arts centre and has been moved from it’s original location in the old docks to the edge of the new bay.
You can see the Dr Who’s Tardis outside the Dr Who exhibition which sadly closes in September 2017
During the summer holiday there is a fairground on the waterfront at Roald Dahl Plass (named after the Cardiff born author).

Scientists use cat food to stop killer shrimp invading Britain

4. SOUNDBITE: (English) Professor Steve Ormerod, Cardiff School of Bio Sciences:
The Dikerogammarus (villosus) this so called killer shrimp, is one of a group of invasive species that is coming out of the Caspian and Black Sea regions. From the late 1990s onwards it's expanded progressively through the low countries, through France, and late last year it was discovered in what now turns out to be three locations in different parts of the United Kingdom - two of which are here in Wales, Eglwys Nunydd Reservoir and this lake behind me at Cardiff Bay.
5. Wide Cardiff Bay with buildings in distance
6. Close of water

8. SOUNDBITE: (English) Andrew Johnson, Environment Agency, Wales:
Our priority at the moment, is two fold again, to understand the extent of the outbreak across Wales, and England, but really is to prevent further inadvertent spread of the species to other water bodies. That is so important to us because of the potential for impact on ecology and biodiversity of those water-bodies.

14. SOUNDBITE: (English) David Hall, Environment Officer, Cardiff Harbour Authority:
Since 2004, when zebra mussels were first discovered in Cardiff Bay we put into place bio-security measures, which is basically to do everything that is possible to ensure the boats, anglers etc, when they move between lakes or rivers from here - don't take the species with them. And that is primarily to wash all their kit down as much as they can and to let it dry out thoroughly before it goes anywhere else.

16. Close up of shrimp being put into dish
17. SOUNDBITE: (English) Andrew Gott, Environmental Monitoring Officer, Environment Agency, Wales:
We're just doing the trials at Cardiff Bay to see if they are attracted to the trap and if they've been successful, because we know they're in Cardiff Bay, and the we're going to go and deploy them in various other water bodies in South Wales that are high priority, that we've identified as high priority, and then we will see if they work. It might be that after 72 hours which we've found has been successful in the bay, that we don't find them in these places, but we are still going to continue to monitor in the future.

LEAD IN:
The U.K. Environment Agency is using cat food to try to catch a killer shrimp that is invading waters across the country.
Fishermen are being warned to look out for the shrimp and new specially-designed traps are being trialled in the ongoing battle to stop the killer from spreading.
STORYLINE:
Measuring the size of a fingernail they look innocent enough.
But these are dikerogammarus villosus shrimps.
Dubbed the killer shrimp because of their almost insatiable appetite, they are threatening to devastate Britain's native shrimp population.
They also pose a threat to native wildlife such as damselflies and water boatmen, with knock-on effects on other animals that feed from them.
The shrimp has now been found at three sites across the UK having made its way on the hulls of boats from eastern Europe via arteries such as the Danube and Rhine Canal.
They are then taken by one of the survey boats out into Cardiff Bay.
