What to do in GHENT | Belgium Day Trip
Every traveller should have Ghent on their list of cities to see. A quick train ride from Brussels, this ancient medieval town has no shortage of sights to see. A Grand Castle, old churches and a 91 metre high Belfry of Ghent. The canal through the old town included boat rides and there are a handful of fantastic museums.
The weather started off great then quickly turned into rain, however, I made the most of it. When the rain wouldn't cease, I had some beer and waffles. Ghent, Belgium is a must see!

Thing to do in belgium
Ghent is a port city in northwest Belgium, at the confluence of the Leie and Scheldt rivers. During the Middle Ages it was a prominent city-state. Today it’s a university town and cultural hub. Its pedestrianized center is known for medieval architecture such as 12th-century Gravensteen castle and the Graslei, a row of guildhalls beside the Leie river harbor.

Ghent in Motion (2018), hidden pearl of Flanders, Belgium. (4,5') 4K AERIAL DRONE MOVIE
Do you remember ‘Ghent in Motion’? In this film project in 2013, we were the pioneers of capturing Ghent from the air, using drones. Today, five years later, both the city and the audiovisual techniques have evolved to such an extent that a sequel was required.
Just like 'Ghent in Motion', 'Ghent from the Sky' again pushes the boundaries to an upper level. Better cameras and lenses allowed us to make breathtaking, sharp and even more profound images of our beautiful city of Ghent.
In the summer of 2017, our cameras flew over the city for twenty days. In the devoted and seamlessly edited result, the medieval city center and the Ghentian architecture play the leading role.
With this film, a digital postcard in the year 2018, which is part of the documentary 'Ghentian', we want you to enjoy our beautiful city in all its glory.

Ghent Belgium Travel Review - Belgium's Hidden Gem
Ghent is a city of about 250K people, located in the Flemish region of Belgium about an hour's drive or train ride from the capital of Brussels. On a recent trip there where I was invited to speak at a local college, I was struck with the beauty of the city so I decided to take some time out to put together this travel review of the city which I believe is a hidden gem of Belgium.

HOW TO: Visit GHENT and BRUGES in 24 HOURS
Belgium is the 35th country we have visited, But Belgium has so many major cities worth visiting, so we spent longer in Belgium than we normally would spend in a country, because we wanted to visit Ghent and Bruges. Now because we lost some time because of our luggage, we only had ONE DAY to do both Bruges and Ghent.
This video shows you that it is possible to do both Bruges and Ghent in the same day, same 24 hour period and not feel rushed or spend a lot of money.
Overall I think I liked Ghent the best, it was the perfect hybrid between Brussels and Bruges. Ghent is built up but also historic. I found Brussels a bit lack lustre, no different from any other Belgium city. Bruges was great but I feel like you would run out of things to do over a weekend, unless it was Christmas time!
HOWEVER, Ghent had the worst waffle game of all the Belgium Cities and the best one we had was in Brussels, Bruges was average for their waffle game. So if you want all the waffles, none of the history Brussels is the way to go. But Ghent is by care the most beautiful city in Belgium!

GROOVY GETAWAY to GLORIOUS GHENT - Belgium - Leonard Does Europe S2 E8
Another day, another day trip, this time from Bruges to Ghent! It was a toss-up between Ghent and Antwerp, but with Ghent being described as smaller (it’s a city of 250,000), I figured it would be a nice contrast to our Brussels day trip.
The train was 7.80 EUR round-trip, but this fare only applies on the weekends. Otherwise it’s 13.60 EUR. The trip takes about 30min, followed by a 30min walk to the center of town. We could have also disembarked at the St. Pieters station and taken a tram to the city center, but it was a beautiful day, so we decided to walk instead.
Ghent has nearly 100 public toilets, along with a map of where they’re all located! Great for someone like me who drinks a lot and has a small bladder, so it was pretty much a moral obligation to try one out.
The most beautiful part of town consists of Graslei and Korenlei , the two banks on either side of the Leie River. Like Bruges and Amsterdam, you can take a canal tour down the Leie, but we didn’t have too much time and had just done a canal tour of Bruges, so we decided to skip it and get our bearings by wandering aimlessly for a while, soaking in the sights:
--Gravensteen, a massive castle smack dab in the middle of town! A full walk-thru video of the castle, including its torture museum, is the subject of my next video/article.
--Het Groot Vleeshuis (The Great Butchers’ Hall), which was built in the 15th century to house a meat hall and indoor market. Those are still there, but now there’s a restaurant situated under the giant hams hanging from the ceiling of the meat hall. The menu looked good, but as a vegetarian, there was no way I was going to be able to eat there without losing my appetite.
-- Werregarenstraat, a two-block alleyway linking Hoogpoort and Onderstraat that is completely covered with graffiti. It was setup as part of the Ghent Festivities festival in 1995 and is one of the few locations where the city officially allows graffiti. Anyone can paint over anything so it’s constantly changing, but the code is to respect work that’s finer than your own.
After seeing the sights, we figured it was time to get down to the important stuff: eating and boozing. First up was the food, which we found at the small and off-the-beaten path restaurant Soup’r, specializing in… soup. This place was jam-packed and is obviously a local favorite, and one taste of the soup explained why: Best. Soup. Ever! Lots of hearty vegetarian, vegan, and meat-filled soups and sandwiches made the three of us very happy after many miles of walking. Included with the soup were a few weird large violet jelly bean things called cuberdons that were also being sold from carts all over town. None of us liked them – must be a Flemish acquired taste. Be aware that Soup’r only takes Belgian debit cards, so make sure you bring some Euros.
I was actually a bit surprised by our first booze stop, which was ‘t Dreupelkot, a legit jenever bar serving over 200 varieties of this tasty grandfather of gin. I’d only had jenever in The Netherlands and assumed it was local to that area, but it didn’t occur to me that it would also be popular in with Dutch population of Ghent. Turns out that by decree of the EU, only liquor made in Belgium, the Netherlands, and four French and German regions can legally be called jenever. Regardless, the korenwijn (a malty style) I had was lovely.
Finally, we ended our drinking at Waterhuis ann de bierkant (Waterhouse on the beerside) a scenic and historic canal-side bar which serves 165 beers, including 3 house beers that you can only find on draft here. I had a glass of the house Gandavum, a dry-hopped 8% Belgian Ale, which I found refreshingly crisp and dangerously drinkable considering the high alcohol content.
While doing my research for the trip, there seemed to be a lot of “Ghent vs Bruges” discussions, and after visiting them both, I’d say that they’re very different, but that both are definitely worth a visit. Bruges is smaller and prettier and quainter and more “magical”, but also very crowded and touristy on the weekends. Ghent, on the other hand, was lively on the weekend we visited, but didn’t feel too crowded. It has plenty of large open spaces, and apparently when the weather is nice there are musicians performing on every corner, from buskers all the way to large brass bands. And, since they’re only 30 minutes from each other, there’s really no good reason not to visit both!

Day Trip To Ghent, Belgium | Travel Vlog | World Culture Network
Welcome to our Ghent, Belgium vlog. This video is not as much a Ghent travel guide, but more of a Ghent, Belgium travel experience with food, attractions, and tourism that can be explored in 1 day in Ghent.
In this episode of #TheDayTripShow, we take a day trip from Brussels to Ghent, a port city in northwest Belgium. We take a tram to the Ghent Tourist Board office and get off the tram before the Koren Market to walk up the remaining distance.
After collecting a Gent City Cards, we head to the Gravensteen to explore this medieval monument. After a detailed tour, we continue our Ghent Day Trip looking for food. Ghent is shut on Mondays, so we settled for Mc Donald’s. After lunch, we went for a free water tram guided tour to get the gorgeous view of the Graslei in Ghent also known as mini-London.
We also visited St. Bavo’s Cathedral on our Ghent Day Trip. By the end of the day, the Market Square was magically lit up as we rushed for local Belgian Waffles, Belgian Hot Chocolate, and some traditional sugar sweets. We hadn’t explored it all, but our Ghent day trip from Brussels was truly eventful.
We highly recommend day trips from Brussels to both Ghent and Bruges in Belgium.

Exploring Ghent - Belgium
Exploring Ghent - Belgium
In this episode we leave the City of Bruges and head toward the city of Ghent. We find an overnight stop with full facilities free of charge so we take advantage. Whilst we were there we a guy called Andreas who lives in Ghent and invited us to park up and his house.
So the following day we headed over to Ghent and parked up at his house before walking into the city. We did get lost heading into the city but thanks to a very kind lady, who showed us the way - Thank you.
The ladies in the Ghent tourist office we super helpful and we left armed with a map. Ghent is a stunning city with lots of interesting buildings, shops and restaurants. A must visit if you are in Belgium.
In one of the main squares (outside the old market) there are a couple of stalls selling locally made sweets. We went to one stand and they actually produce these sweets called Ghent Noses. Thank you to the gentleman on the stall for explaining the history of these sweets - Yes they were amazing and you must buy a bag if you're in Ghent.
We only had one day in the city but it was enough to see the main sites that Ghent has to offer
In our next episode we arrive in the Netherlands
Thanks for watching

This film features views around the city of Gent, taken on a GoPro Hero6. The film begins with arrival at Gent Dampoort railway station, before an exploration of the Dampoort area into the city centre, before returning to Dampoort's Porta Ganda. The journey then goes south along the Visserijvaart canal and then West towards the Arteveldehogeschool, Sint-Pietersplein and Sint-Pieterskerk. From here the journey goes North towards Universiteit Gent, and then North East back towards the Dampoort area. From there the journey heads towards the iconic and historic religious buildings of the old town of Gent including Sint-Baafskathedraal, Het Belfort van Gent and Sint-Niklaaskerk.
The journey then heads through the cobbled streets towards the River Leie and along there past this touristic centre. The journey then goes through the shopping and commercial area, before heading back along Korenmarkt towards Sint-Niklaaskerk, the Stadshal and Stadhuis Gent.
Werregaren Straat also known as Graffitistraatje is the next key point of interest before the journey heads into the commercial district once again, and then onto Vrijdagmarkt before eventually heading back towards the Dampoort area via some of the modern and business streets of the city centre.
Finally the journey ends by heading back towards Gent-Dampoort railway station, and the departure from there by train Northwards.

Ghent at Night | Exploring Belgium | 2017
Spent some time exploring lovely Belgium earlier this year and one of my favorite stops was Ghent.
Ghent is a medieval port city in the Northwest part of the country and it's one of the more popular tourist towns apart from Bruges and Brussels.
I had a great time in Ghent and I can't wait to head back and spend some more time checking out the city.
There is definitely more to do in Bruges if you're looking for touristy stuff but I really loved the vibe in Ghent as there are tons of students there and plenty of different venues, shops, restos, and cafes to check out.
Went out one night with my Canon S120 and decided to film some of the how the place looks once the sun sets!
Keep up with me online!

Visit Ghent - What to See & Do in Gent, Belgium
If you are heading to Flanders, then you need to visit to visit Ghent (Gent). It is one of the prettiest towns in Belgium and gives you tons of fantastic churches, architecture and a great canal system to tour around.
