The OverLand Train in Australia: Adelaide to Melbourne 2017
take a ride of a lifetime across the Australian landscape.
-
The Overland is an Australian passenger train service between Melbourne and Adelaide. It first ran in 1887 as the Adelaide Express, but South Australians have always referred to the train as the Melbourne Express. It was given its current name in 1926. Now operated by private company Great Southern Rail, the train completes two return trips a week covering 828 kilometres between the state capitals. Originally an overnight train, it now operates during the day. ~Wikitravel

Filmed on Saturday 3rd February 2018. This video shows the trip from Melbourne to Adelaide aboard the Overland in the red standard service. NR19 hauled the service on this occassion. You can see onboard footage from the carriage, the seats and the cafe car 'Matilda'. You will also see various scenes from along the trip including towns such as Geelong, Ararat, Horsham, Dimboola, Bordertown, Murray Bridge and the Adelaide suburbs. I also filmed some train we passed along the way, like 8164 & X48 in Dimboola and later GWA006, GWU005 & GWA007 at Tailem Bend.
The trip is well worth it for anyone considering it. I can highly recommend it. Hopefully you enjoy this video :)

The Journey on the Overland from Adelaide to Melbourne
'The Overland' Melbourne ➡️ Adelaide ????05/11/19
A ride on the Overland from Mlebourne to Adelaide on Tuesday 5th November 2019.
This was a special occassion as newly painted in the 'Great Southrn' livery NR31 lead the train back to Adelaide.
On the journey you also pass through the Historic towns of Geelong, Ararat, Stawell, Horsham, Bordertown and Murray Bridge to name a few. In this video you will see footage of some of the towns you pass along the way.
The journey follows the western standard gauge railway between Victoria and South Australia, passing through some very scenic locations. This includes the Grampians national park, and can be see between Ararat and Horsham. The western part of Victoria is a big agricultural region, producing large quantities of wheat amongst other agricultural products. So naturally in this video you will lot's and lot's of wheat fields on the way to Adelaide.
Once you cross the border into South Australia, the scenery noticeable changes. It seem far drier, and dustier in SA. The soil also takes on that classic rich, red colour you might associate with central Australia.
The line between Melbourne and Adelaide can be quite busy at times, and there are plenty of trains in this video.
I hope you enjoy this video :) please comment below if you have been on the Overland and let me know your experiences of the trip.
A trip onboard The Overland; Melbourne - Adelaide Passenger Train
The iconic Overland passenger train is an interstate passenger train service operating between the cities of Melbourne and Adelaide. Operating since 1887, the train transverses 858km on its 10 and a half hour journey between the two cities. The train is operated by Journey Beyond (aka Great Southern Rail) with NR Class locomotives leased from freight operator Pacific National.
In this video we take a ride onboard The Overland from Melbourne to Adelaide. We sample the onboard service in both the standard 'red' economy class and the 'red premium' first class to see what it's like to travel onboard the train.
On the trip to Adelaide we pass through numerous country towns, see the food onboard and witness lovely scenery including a large bushfire.
The Overland has been serving passengers for over 132 years. However it's future is currently uncertain. Unlike Journey Beyond's other long distance trains such as The Ghan and the Indian Pacific which targets the long distance luxury tourist market, The Overland acts as a form of public transport, making intermediate stops in small country towns and offering more affordable fares. However because of this The Overland isn't profitable and relies on government subsidies to continue operating.
However over time it's patronage has dwindled due to competition from air travel. The service today is a shadow of its former self; The Overland currently operates twice weekly whereas prior to 2013 the service ran daily. In 2019 The Overland was threatened with closure after the South Australian government withdrew it's share of funding. For the past 12 months The Overland has been completely subsidised by the Victorian government; of which the funding is now running out. If a new funding deal isn't reached then The Overland may cease to operate at the end of December 2019.

The Overland; Melbourne - Adelaide Passenger Train Compilation
In this video we see clips of The Overland interstate passenger train that runs between the two large cities of Melbourne and Adelaide. We see the train at various locations around Melbourne and Geelong including Lovely Banks, Corio, North Shore, Laverton, South Kingsville, Southern Cross Station and more!
Operated by Journey Beyond Rail Exhibitions, The Overland trip takes 10 and a half hours over a distance of 838km, stopping at a number of smaller towns along the way. The train has operated continuously since 1878 and in its heyday operated daily between the two cities.
Unfortunately The Overland is a shadow of its former self. Patronage has declined over the years; primarily due to competition from air travel, with the train now running only twice weekly in both directions. Unlike Journey Beyond's other and more famous trains such as The Ghan and the Indian Pacific which are effectively tourist trains, The Overland is more of a public transport service, and has relied on government subsidies to continue operating.
In 2018 the future of The Overland was in doubt after the South Australian government withdrew it's subsidy for the service, with trains due to stop running at the end of that year. However the Victorian Government essentially saved the service, agreeing to provide extra funding to allow the train to operate throughout 2019. However that funding now dried up, the future of the service is now in doubt. At the time of uploading this video the Victorian Government had just provided enough funding for the service to continue until March 2020.

The Overland arrives at Melbourne on January 17 1996
The Overland, behind CLP8, is arriving at Melbourne's Spencer Street Station on January 17, 1996. At the time, the Overland was an overnight train operating between Melbourne and Adelaide on a line converted from broad gauge to standard gauge. Due to its reputation for poor timekeeping, the local gunzels refer to it as the Overdue. Behind the Overland, A71 is approaching with a V/Line train.

The Great Southern Rail's (GSR) Overland service on 8/1/2010 has only a few more minutes before its journey from Adelaide to Melbourne will be complete. But before then it still needs to negotiate the upgrade works in Dynon freight yards and make a stop for safeworking proceedures to be completed. This also allows the puzzled passengers a better look at some crazy guy with a camera filming it all.... Due to the position of the sun affecting image quality I've used the opportunity to experiment with some 'artistic filtering' in the movie.
