Palestinian Museum opens in West Bank | DW English
The Palestinian Museum in Birzet, in the West Bank, has opened its inaugural show after a 15-month delay. The highly political exhibit focuses on the contested holy city of Jerusalem. For more, go to
About the Palestinian Museum
The Palestinian Museum is dedicated to exploring and celebrating the history, culture and society of modern and contemporary Palestine. Nestled among Birzeit's rolling hills and cascading terraces, the Museum will open in 2016 as a physical and virtual space that brings Palestinians -- both here and abroad -- together in a shared exploration of their past, present and future.
Inside the First Palestinian Museum in the U.S. | NowThis World

The Palestinian museum serves as a space for education and elevation of Palestinian art rather than war and conflict. The Palestinian museum defies the traditional Western narrative of the Palestinian story by acting as a space for celebration of cultural life rather than political divide.
Saleh's parents left Salama during Israel's War of Independence, eventually settling in the West Bank town of El Bireh, near Ramallah.
At the age of 18, in 1969, two years after the 1967 war, Saleh moved to the United States, studied at Oberlin College, earned his M.B.A. from the University of Connecticut, and became an entrepreneur.
Hundreds of photos, paintings and sculptures by some of the most prominent Palestinian artists are proudly displayed at his museum, including pieces from Gaza, Jordan, Lebanon, and Ramallah.
Saleh has managed this despite the obstacles of shipping art from occupied territories like Gaza and West Bank.
Saleh is financing the museum himself, but he said he hopes to eventually attract enough financial support to relocate the gallery from its suburban, turnpike setting to major cities across the U.S.

Palestinian museum shows first exhibition
(27 Aug 2017) More than a year after it was officially opened, the museum of Palestinian history has finally inaugurated its first exhibition at the university town of Birzeit in the West Bank.
The once empty halls were now packed with Palestinian officials and guests, and more importantly - the Jerusalem Lives exhibit.
The glass and stone building is located on a hill on a 40,000 square-metre (yards) piece of land, cost 28 (m) million US dollars to build, is dedicated to Palestinian history, culture and society.
A dispute over different creative visions for the museum's opening led to the resignation of the previous director.
The Palestinian Museum's director Mahmoud Hawari said that the museum has a rich programme for the years to come, full of exhibitions, digital archival projects and public programmes.
It took three and a half years to build the museum.
Palestinians have about 30 museums in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem - the areas where they hope to establish a state - but nothing on the scale of this new project.

Material Heritage in Rural Palestine |
Material Heritage in Rural Palestine through a Re-examination
Researcher and lecturer of art history and interior design, Maissoun Sharkawi’s research on cultural heritage is underrepresented in Palestine’s literature. She has sought an industrial revival in the production of olive oil, a historically essential ingredient in the Palestinian economy. On this academic journey, she explores manual olive oil presses in technical detail, in addition to the seasonal features associated with them. In doing so, Sharkawi has reclaimed a wealth of forgotten memory for the benefit of the Palestinian knowledge-base. In her examination of cultural heritage through material findings, she foregoes ancient archeological sites, opting instead to study more recent iterations of manual olive oil presses.

The Dead Sea (Al-Bahr al-Mayyit / البحر الميت) is the lowest elevation point on planet Earth, reaching 393 meters (1,289 ft.) below sea level. It is actually, in fact, a lake - the deepest hypersaline lake in the world. Spanning from 51 kilometers (31 miles) in length to 15 kilometers (9 miles) in width at its widest point, The Dead Sea is located in between the border of present-day Jordan and occupied Palestine.
Due to its unusually high concentrations of salt, plants and animals are unable to reside within this unique body of water. Consequently, The Dead Sea was named after its uninhabitable living environment. Though, upon recent discoveries, scientists using specialized diving equipment have found tiny amounts of microscopic bacteria and microbial fungi surrounding freshwater springs deep within the lake. Thus revealing that living organisms are indeed surviving within The Dead Sea!
Unearthing Seven Remarkable Facts of The Dead Sea:
1. Scientists have drilled below The Dead Sea discovering it disappearance of the entire lake 120,000 years ago, before the Ice Age, during a particularly warm period in time.
2. The Dead Sea water comprises precisely 33.7% salinity and is nearly nine times saltier than that of average ocean water.
3. The asphalt retrieved from The Dead Sea is a black substance that is constantly being spit up from deep holes within the ground.
4. The ancient Egyptians were some of the very first customers of The Dead Sea as the excretion of asphalt from the water was used within balms for mummifications.
5. Archaeologists have discovered skulls from the Neolithic period (the later part of The Stone Age) within The Dead Sea.
6. The water within The Dead Sea contains a higher density than that of human bodies, allowing for one to float perfectly atop the lake, even with no prior experience in swimming.
7. The world’s lowest road frames this lake at 393 meters (1,289 ft.) below sea level.
