Splendidly situated on a hillside above the Vieux Port, this colorful neighborhood is the historic center and cultural heart of Marseille. Le Panier is Marseille's oldest quarter, inhabited since antiquity when the ancient Greeks settled here in 600 BC. With its steep, narrow winding streets and quaint pastel buildings, this quarter offers a glimpse into the charming personality of Marseilles. Once a working class neighborhood, Le Panier is now gentrified, but still has a fascinating multiethnic and artistic character.
You'll find plenty of authentic Algerian cuisine, local artisan boutiques, gourmet food shops, and art galleries. This quarter is also a residential neighborhood, and the typical houses with shuttered window and lines of laundry provide evidence of the families who live there. Visitors may begin a walking tour on the north side of the Vieux Port harbor basin at the Quai du Port and then walk up La Canebière, a vibrant boulevard that buzzes with activity. The quarter has several important monuments such as the Hôtel de Ville (Town Hall), which was built in the second half of the 17th century based on a Genoese architectural model.

From the Vieux Port, hike north up to this fantastic history-woven quarter, which is fabulous for a wander with its artsy ambience, cool hidden squares and sun-baked cafes. In Greek Massilia it was the site of the agora (marketplace), hence its name, which means ‘the basket’. During WWII the quarter was dynamited and afterwards rebuilt. Today it’s a mishmash of lanes hiding artisan shops, ateliers (workshops) and terraced houses strung with drying washing.
Its centerpiece is Centre de la Vieille Charité, and nearby Cathédrale de Marseille Notre Dame de Major stands guard between the old and new ports. The Panier is the oldest district of Marseille; it has seen waves of immigration in different layers. This is still true today, even if with the economic development and the tourism, it increasingly tends to benefit to artists and middle class.
Nevertheless The Panier still feels the good popular Marseille, and through its narrow streets, you will enjoy the most typical slice of life. Climb the 'montée des Acoules', watch the Notre Dame de la Garde from the Lenche Place, take the aperitif at the Bar of the Treize Coins, go into the galleries, have lunch at the Pistoles Place.

In today's vlog(s) we take the train from Nice to Marseille, and see some of the major tourist spots. Marseille was more of a layover for us so we could easily get to Malaga, not too much action in these vlogs, sorry!

A Walk Around Cathédrale de la Major, Marseille, France
Marseille Cathedralis a Roman Catholic cathedral, and a national monument of France, located in Marseille. It has been a basilica minor since 1896. It is the seat of the Archdiocese of Marseille (formerly the Diocese of Marseille until its elevation in 1948).
Part of the earlier, much smaller cathedral still remains, alongside the new cathedral. It was built in the 12th century in a simple romanesque style. Two bays of the nave were demolished in the 1850s, when the new cathedral was built. What remains is the choir and one bay of the nave. It is commonly referred to as the Vieille Major. The composer Charles Desmazures was organist at the old cathedral.
he present cathedral, the Nouvelle Major, was built on an enormous scale in Byzantine-Roman Revival style from 1852 to 1896 on the site used for the cathedrals of Marseille since the fifth century, principally by the architects Léon Vaudoyer and Henri-Jacques Espérandieu (1829-1874). It is 142 meters (469 ft) long, and the main cupola is 70 meters (231 ft) high. With a capacity of 3,000 seats, it is one of the largest cathedrals in France.
