Sittingbourne is an industrial town situated in the Swale district of Kent in south east England, 17 miles from Canterbury and 45 miles from London. Sittingbourne sits beside the Roman Watling Street, an ancient British trackway used by the Romans and the Anglo-Saxons and next to the Swale, a strip of sea separating mainland Kent from the Isle of Sheppey. The town of Sittingbourne became prominent after the death of Thomas Becket in 1170, since it provided a convenient resting point on the road from London to Canterbury and Dover.
Sittingbourne is growing rapidly due to a number of large residential developments, and its railway line links to London Victoria and HS1 to St Pancras International, the journey taking about an hour from Sittingbourne railway station.
Sittingbourne and its consumed suburb of Milton today is a growing town, with much recent expansion by way of house-building in the former chalk and brick clay works digs. Expansion is attributable to the towns train line links to London, some 60 minutes away by high speed rail and easy access to the A2, A249, M2 and M20.
Transport has always played a large part of Sittingbourne's history, geographically located midway between the major port of Dover and the important capital of London was the reason for an enlarged settlement at Sittingbourne. Roads came early to Sittingbourne, with the Roman construction of Watling Street.
The preserved former paper mill railway the Sittingbourne and Kemsley Light Railway still exists today. In 1965 it was decided that the railway was uneconomic, with the significant progress made in the use of the car, and so lorries were more commonly used for transporting produce. Consequently, by 1969 the Bowater Light Railway, much loved as it was by the firm (and with assistance of Capt Peter Manisty) was handed over to the Locomotive Club of Great Britain to be preserved and operated as the Sittingbourne and Kemsley Light Railway.

BOWATERS PAPER RAILWAY visited and ridden in 1962
The former Bowaters Paper Mills in, and near, Sittingbourne, Kent, UK, had a 2ft 6in (762mm) gauge internal railway system powered almost entirely by steam locomotives. Sittingbourne Paper Mill and the industrial railway system are now but memories. Although part of the railway and some of its steam locos survive as the Sittingbourne and Kemsley Light Railway.
We also see the the two standard gauge locos Bowaters had for their connection with British Rail's Sheerness branch.
The video also shows the overhead cableway conveying imported logs from the company's Ridham Dock to Kemsley Paper Mill. This cableway too no longer exists.
Bowaters Paper Railway
The Bowaters Paper Railway is a unique industrial railway which dates back only to 1908 when two steam locomotives were introduced to work what had been a horse-worked tramway serving the paper mills at Sittingbourne which dated back to the 17th century. The new railway was far more elaborate than the tramway and was extended to a new paper mill at Kemsley in 1924. In that year an unusual fireless locomotive was acquired and named Unique and this is seen working at Kemsley in the 1960s alongside some of the large fleet of conventional steam locomotives. The line closed in 1969 and was leased to the Locomotive Club of Great Britain which formed the Kemsley & Sittingbourne Light Railway. Although undated this film is possibly a record of the handing-over ceremony on 4th October 1969. Today the piles of paper and pulp and the pulp mills are but a memory although Unique remains, as a static exhibit, at Kemsley Down station on the modern K&SLR.

ELEVATED industrial Steam Railway
This is a former industrial 2’ 6” (762mm) narrow gauge railway once part of the Bowaters Paper Company in Sittingbourne, Kent in the UK. The railway was used to haul materials and personnel between the two mills located in Sittingbourne and Kemsley, then to, from and around Ridham Dock. It was closed in 1969 after it was deemed more expensive to run than transporting goods by road. The lower part of the railway and rolling stock was taken over by the Locomotive Club of Great Britain which then became the Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway (SKLR). The unique viaduct section was built in 1914-15 and spans half a mile along from Milton Regis to Sittingbourne Viaduct Station. The Sittingbourne Paper Mill site was closed in 2007 and demolished in 2010 threatening the railway with closure. After numerous discussions with the then owners M-Reel and various parties, the railway was saved from closure. It still operates today as a heritage railway. In this video, I take a look at the line, viaduct with the old steam pipes and see some working diesel and steam locomotives running on the line.

Sittingbourne to Newington railworks
Here we go, leaving the paper mills and print lines of Sittingbourn for the rural stop at Newington. At newington the track splits into 4, and stays that way until you approach Rainham. This is of course a passing loop for goods trains headed for Sittingbourne and Sheppy.
