Bahrain: Fidjeri Music
Bahrain: Fidjeri Music
For centuries, pearl diving was an honourable and widespread occupation in Bahrain. In the 1930s, with the discovery of oil in the region and competition from cultivated pearls in Japan, the pearl-diving industry began to decline. Fidjeri, a rich musical genre associated with pearl divers, survives. The fidjeri, of which there are eight types, is a vocal and dance tradition accompanied by hand claps, as well as the playing of small cymbals, water jars, and ancient cylindrical and frame drums. The fidjeri style performed in this example is called adsani.
Preparing Wire Traps for Fish in Bahrain
Fishermen on the Gulf of Bahrain weave enormous curved fish traps out of wire, as they prepare to set out in their traditional vessels called dhows. The word bahrain means “two seas” in Arabic, and for centuries the country has been a centre for major sea-trade routes.

World Travel Blog Episode 41: Exploring The Kingdom of Bahrain
Bahrain (/bɑːˈreɪn/ (About this sound listen); Arabic: البحرين al-Baḥrayn IPA: [aɫ baħrajn] (About this sound listen)), officially the Kingdom of Bahrain (Arabic: مملكة البحرين About this sound Mamlakat al-Baḥrayn), is an Arab constitutional monarchy in the Persian Gulf. It is an island country consisting of a small archipelago centered around Bahrain Island, situated between the Qatar peninsula and the north eastern coast of Saudi Arabia, to which it is connected by the 25-kilometre (16 mi) King Fahd Causeway. Bahrain's population is 1,234,571 (c. 2010), including 666,172 non-nationals.[8] It is 765.3 square kilometres (295.5 sq mi) in size, making it the third-smallest nation in Asia after the Maldives and Singapore.[9]
Bahrain is the site of the ancient Dilmun civilisation.[10] It has been famed since antiquity for its pearl fisheries, which were considered the best in the world into the 19th century.[11] Bahrain was one of the earliest areas to convert to Islam (ad 628). Following a period of Arab rule, Bahrain was occupied by the Portuguese in 1521, who in turn were expelled in 1602 by Shah Abbas I of the Safavid dynasty under the Persian Empire. In 1783, the Bani Utbah clan captured Bahrain from Nasr Al-Madhkur and it has since been ruled by the Al Khalifa royal family, with Ahmed al Fateh as Bahrain's first hakim. In the late 1800s, following successive treaties with the British, Bahrain became a protectorate of the United Kingdom. In 1971, Bahrain declared independence. Formerly an emirate, Bahrain was declared a Kingdom in 2002. In 2011, the country experienced protests inspired by the regional Arab Spring.[12]
Bahrain had the first post-oil economy in the Persian Gulf.[13] Since the late 20th century, Bahrain has invested in the banking and tourism sectors.[14] Many large financial institutions have a presence in Manama, the country's capital. Bahrain has a high Human Development Index and was recognised by the World Bank as a high-income economy.

Pre-Islamic Arabia
Pre-Islamic Arabia refers to the Arabian Peninsula prior to the rise of Islam in the 630s.
Some of the settled communities developed into distinctive civilizations. Sources for these civilizations are not extensive, and are limited to archaeological evidence, accounts written outside of Arabia and Arab oral traditions later recorded by Islamic scholars. Among the most prominent civilizations were the Thamud which arose around 3000 BCE and lasted to about 300 CE and Dilmun which arose around the end of the fourth millennium and lasted to about 600 CE. Additionally, from the beginning of the first millennium BCE, Southern Arabia was the home to a number of kingdoms such as the Sabaeans and the coastal areas of Eastern Arabia were controlled by the Iranian Parthians and Sassanians from 300 BCE.
