Phantom of the Opera - Auckland 2016
An all New Zealand production of Phantom of the Opera opens this week. Starring Chris Crowe, Barbara Graham and Rory Nolan, this beloved classic is in town for almost a month.
The Phantom of the Opera is based on the novel by Gaston Leroux . Far beneath the majesty and splendour of the Paris Opera House, hides the Phantom in a shadowy existence. Shamed by his physical appearance and feared by all, the love he holds for his beautiful protegée Christine Daàe is so strong that even her heart can’t resist.
The musical opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre on 9 October 1986 with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in the leading roles, and there have been dozens of productions worldwide since then. Now in its 29th record breaking year, The Phantom of the Opera continues to captivate audiences in theatres around the world. Now it is New Zealand’s turn to once again witness the spell binding magic of this spectacular musical.
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s mesmerizing score including well known songs Music of the Night, All I Ask Of You, Masquerade and of course The Phantom of the Opera along with all new scenery and costumes designed in New Zealand will magically combine to bring this tragic love story to life each night.

Lux Festival Of Light, Wellington, New Zealand: Opera House Lane Installations
'Orbs' by Out of the Dark: The ‘orbs’ series is a lighting installation by Out of the Dark that has been exhibited in a series of historic locations over the past three years.‘Orbs’ is an installation in which the LED lit orbs are suspended within a specific site. The orbs are extremely energy efficient, with the entire installation drawing less than two hundred and fifty watts.
The ‘orbs’ were designed to celebrate and emphasize the site in which they are installed. They have been installed in; a 100 year old Pohutakawa tree, a historic laneway, old cement silos, a national park, a historic old power station and public park.
The ‘orbs’ bounce their ambient light around the site, softly illuminating the surroundings and highlighting the subtle textures. All the globes are individually controlled and the colour mixing of these creates some stunning and memorable effects. There are three different sizes of orbs which are configured uniquely in each new space.

'Light Rails' by Angus Muir Design: Light Rails is a site specific installation commissioned for exhibition in Opera House Lane as part of Wellington LUX 2014. It consists of thousands of tiny LED light sources (pixels) laid out in a series of 5m high vertical rails. These rails are facing the walls so the light the audience sees is reflected off the wall. The installation will enliven and celebrate the laneway – its linearity and narrowness are reflected in the vertical, tightly packed rails of light.
Angus Muir Design is an award winning hybrid creative studio located in Auckland, NZ. They develop engaging interactive experiences, objects and multimedia.
Angus Muir Design specialise in creative solutions and treatments of space through design and installation. As creative problem solvers, they are passionate about projects that catch the eye, stimulate and inspire. They operate as a multidisciplinary practical design team, crafting mixed media executions for engaging humans in space.
'The Chandelier' by WCC Urban Design Team: The Chandelier responds to the changing use of Opera House’s back courtyard from car park into an ‘open living room’ and provides a little glamour to contrast with the Lane’s ‘grunge’. The form is representative of the surrounding built-form which is geometric and hard edged.
Wellington City Council’s Urban Design Team focus on improvement projects throughout Wellington to provide high-quality public spaces and to enhance the liveability of the central city and suburban environments.
