Rivington Pike & Pigeon Tower
Aerial video footage & photos of Rivington Pike, and the Pigeon Tower.
Rivington Pike is a hill summit on Winter Hill, part of the West Pennine Moors, overlooking the village of Rivington in Lancashire, England. Rivington Pike was the site of one of a series of beacons spanning England as an early warning system. The beacon system was put in place by Ranulph de Blundeville, 4th Earl of Chester around 1139, following a Scottish raid in 1138.
Pigeon Tower, stands at the northwestern edge of the Terraced Gardens. Italian in style, the Tower was built in 1910 by Lord Leverhulme as part of his extensive Rivington estate. The first two floors were home to ornamental doves and pigeons, whilst at the top was a small sitting room that was used as a lookout over the boating lake, and by Lady Lever as a sewing and music room. The three floors are linked by a solid stone staircase that runs up the semi-circular spine of the building.

Rivington Terraced Gardens Pigeon Tower Restoration
Lord Leverhulme, the soap magnet and industrialist conceived and financed these fantastic oriental-inspired gardens, sadly mostly lost to nature for many years.
Gina and I took a hike up to the famous Pigeon Tower today, Lady Leverhulme's little treasure, with the fourth floor housing her music and sewing room, and dove cotes below.
We were surprised and delighted at the restoration works being undertaken at the Tower and in the gardens. I hope they can be restored to at least show part of their former glory.
Well done Bolton and Horwich ......Bravo

In Lever Park, Rivington near Chorley, William Lever built a folly which is a scale replica of Liverpool Castle in ruins. Building started in 1912 and the replica, which was not completed, was based on a conjectural reconstruction of the castle prepared by E. W. Cox in 1892

A daring couple are set to be given a real life fright night with the chance to sleep in an abandoned tower. The bare, dusty tower was once the favourite spot of one of Britain’s most successful businessmen and his wife.
The historic Pigeon Tower at Rivington Gardens in Rivington, Lancs, was lovingly built by the founder of the Unilever empire for his wife – but has stood empty for 80 years following their deaths.
William Hesketh Lever, known as Lord Leverhulme, constructed the tower for Lady Elizabeth Leverhulme to use as a drawing and sewing room as she surveyed the panoramic views over the landscape.

Exploring around Rivington Terraced Gardens
Exploring around Rivington Terraced Gardens. Created for soap magnate Lord Leverhulme for him to relax in and entertain. Situated on the hillside below Rivington Pike, the Gardens were designed by landscape designer Thomas Mawson between 1905-1922.
He created a dramatic hillside garden, a network of footpaths that provide the terraces that give the Terraced Gardens their name. The upper section of the park contains the remains of the formal lawns and gardens which surrounded Lord Leverhulme's residences. These include a Japanese Garden and lake, an Italian Garden and lake, and the former Orchestra Lawn. The park contains many dramatic stone-built structures, including a magnificent 7-arched bridge, a number of Summer Houses and Viewing Platforms, and the haunting building known as the Pigeon Tower.
It's a magical place of winding footpaths and unexpected surprises.

Lord Leverhulme (William Hesketh Lever), the soap magnate and founder of Lever Brothers (now Unilever) conceived and built the Terraced Gardens with the help of Thomas Mawson between 1905 and 1925. After his death, and subsequent sale of the property in 1925, the gardens began to fall into disrepair. The houses were demolished after World War II, and Rivington Terraced Gardens were left to the forces of nature.
There is nowhere else like it on Earth. With iconic structures like the Pigeon Tower, the Seven Arch Bridge, the Summer Houses and Loggia, not to mention the Pulham rock faces around the pathways and Lakes – the Italian lake, where Lever used to take his morning swim, and the beautiful Japanese Lake, which was once looked upon from glamorous oriental pagoda-style tea houses – the Gardens are truly unique.
60 years later United Utilities now own the land, and the Rivington Heritage Trust repair and conservation project is underway. In 2016, Rivington Heritage Trust, as part of a partnership with Groundwork Cheshire Lancashire and Merseyside and United Utilities successfully secured £3.4 million in funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund as part of a three year £4.2 million restoration package to conserve and revitalise Rivington Terraced Gardens. Although the restoration is not finished, as the project progresses, and more of the shrubs, self-seeded trees and mud are cleared away, the original shape of Lord Leverhulme’s garden is becoming more visible. New paths are being discovered, new stairways uncovered, and visitors to the gardens are beginning to see how it once might have been.
