Trip to Agios Pavlos (Άγιος Παύλος) - Crete, Greece
Drive from Hora Sfakion resort in Chania prefecture to Agios Ioannis village. It's better to get there in the morning. It will take you three hours to get to Agios Pavlos and three hours to get back. You might want to spend a little time on the beautiful beach of Agios Pavlos before you get back so spare some time for that.
Once you get to Agios Ioannis, you'll see a green gate near the village sign. On the left of the gate, there is a road down to a church where you can leave your car and start hiking.
Follow the road in front of the church and then pass the little gate. You'll get into a dent that has a very old olive tree in the middle of it. Go further, pass the wall made of stone and you'll get to the hiking trail. From there, follow the red/white sign.
For one hour, the road might seem easy, but it will get difficult once you get to the steep path that leads to the pine tree forest above the beach. The hike will take you two hours from the top to the base. Going down seemed more difficult than going back up, as part of the trail is covered in pine needles and proved challenging to step onto. So choose your shoes carefully, must have trekking soles. Also make sure you carry enough water in your backpack (at least 3-4 litres/person) and use it wisely during the trip as there is no water tap along the route. A trick learned from the Greeks: put some of your water bottles in the freezer one night before your trip (empty about ¼ first and place them on the side), they will keep perfectly cold for the entire day and you can have ice cold water even on your way back.
Aside from that, make sure you enjoy the view along the way, as there are various spots where you can stop to catch your breath.
On your way through the pine forest, the last part of your trip, you'll encounter a sign that will tell you to go left for Loutro (a small village) and right to get to Agia Roumeli. Follow the trail to Agia Roumeli (Αγία Ρουμέλη). It will take you 20 more minutes to reach the beach of Agios Pavlos (Άγιος Παύλος).
Σελάκανο/ Selakano, Crete in 4K
Selakano (Greek: Σελάκανο) is a forested valley and a hamlet in the municipality of Ierapetra on the island of Crete. Selakano forms one of the most important ecosystems on Crete. The forest core of wild pine is also important on the Mediterranean level. It is located in the northwestern territories of Ierapetra in the southeastern part of the Dikti massif, surrounded by the four highest peaks (Lazaros 2085 m, Spathi 2148 m, Afendis Christos 2141 m, Psari Madara 2090 m). In the east, there is a panoramic view of the Libyan Sea, at a distance of 15 km.
In the forest Pinus brutia is a prevalent drought-tolerant species that can withstand six-month droughts and grow in various rocks and soils. There are also kermes oaks (Quercus coccifera), planes (Platanus orientalis), Cretan maples (Acer sempervirens), cypresses (Cupressus sempervirens) and several other plant species. In the basin, where the settlements of Selakano and Mathokastana are located, there are many walnut and pear trees, vineyards and, patches of fields where vegetables are cultivated.
The forest is the nesting and hunting ground of many predatory birds like the hawk. It is the most productive apiculture spot in Crete, while in the past wood and resin were harvested.

Hiking, climbing, waterfall, camper & camping on Crete Greece in de winter
This active excursion is most suitable for spring, autumn and winter.
Camping on Crete: a multiple days tour through South East Crete in an area with lots of outdoor possibilities. We leave from Zorbas Island at 7 o'clock in the morning. After a beautiful route through Northern Crete with small Cretan villages, we arrive around 9 o'clock at the camping site. First we set up our tents. We have enough tents with us, so you don't have to bring your own tent. The camping of Koutsounari is the perfect base for different hikes. At the camping site you can also rent a cabin or a wooden hut. Off course it is also possible to stay with your camper. Around 10 o'clock we leave to the mountains. Route from Zorbas island: Agios Nikolaos, Ierapetra, Koutsounari, Koutsouras.
Climbing & abseiling on Crete: In the area of Agios Ioannis is an impressive climbing wall. We drive through the country roads to the Thripi mountains. We park the car and start to hike upwards. After an hour hiking we arrive at a steep rock. On this high rock are iron steps. We always check the iron stairs before we start climbing. The first climbing wall is approx. 35 meters straight up. The view towards the Libyan Sea is breath taking. After this climb we reach a plateau, we can climb further on a 40 meters high climbing wall. We can walk back through a challenging route or descend via abseiling.
After a few hours climbing on the steep rocks, it's time to hike back to the car. The hike down is quit rocky. We have a great view through the pine trees over the Libyan Sea. When we arrive at the car, our route continues to Agios Ioannis.
Hiking & waterfall Milonas: a beautiful walk that can be done in different ways. There is a short walk towards the waterfall, but we can also make a round walk. The short walk is 4 kilometres, the round walk is approx. 8-12 kilometres. It is a green hiking area with lots of pine trees and rock formations in the South Crete. The path to the waterfall is well indicated. This waterfall is dry during the summer. The hiking trail goes over in an old water integration. We continue our walk through this old integration until you reach the waterfall. It is an impressive waterfall, if the sun shines you can even see a rainbow! We can follow another path upwards to see the waterfall from above, but you can also hike to Agios Ioannis.
From the waterfall to the camping: when we return to the car, we drive through green nature via Frema to Koutsounari. At the Libyan Sea, we turn rights towards Koutsounari and Ierapetra. When we arrive at the camping in Koutsounari, you can take a refreshing dive in the sea!
Excursions in the area of Koutsounari: there are many different walks in the area of Koutsounari. It is also possible to combine this trip with a jeep safari. You can also visit Chrissi Island, the boat leaves from the harbor of Ierapetra.

Olive Trees waking up after a night of snow in Crete
Olive Trees waking up after a night of snow in Crete, Greece
Crete Greece, Psiloritis the white mountains in Anogia Rethymno
Crete, Greece's largest island, is known for its varied terrain, which ranges from fine-sand beaches at Elafonisi to the White Mountains. Mt. Ida, the tallest of the range, is home to the Ideon Cave, which was the birthplace of Zeus, according to Greek mythology. The capital, Heraklion, is home to the renowned Heraklion Archaeological Museum, housing Minoan artifacts, and Knossos, a Bronze Age settlement.
The White Mountains, or Lefka Ori, is the largest massif on the island and its highest summit is Pahnes (2.453 m). The heart of this imposing range includes the Mountain Desert, where more than fifty peaks named Sori (piles), reminding of cones, exceed the altitude of 2.000 m. Dolines, reminding of upturned cones are formed at the foot of Sori peaks. This creepy and haunting landscape is a unique geological formation in the entire northern hemisphere.
Hiking in the White Mountains requires fitness, experience and a good sense of orientation. There are several mountain shelters where mountaineers can spend their night.
The highest mountain areas are covered by snow till late June. There are numerous caves, precipices, sinkholes and canyons. The most famous gorge is Samaria in the White Mountains National Reserve, but there are many more: to the south, the gorges of Aradena, Tripiti, Klados, Agia Irini, Imbros and Kallikratis, and to the north, the gorge of Vrissi, Therisso, Cyclamen, Boriano, Dittany, Kidoni and more.
The White Mountains are home to the deepest caves in Greece. These include the dark sinkholes of Gourgouthakas and Leon. The most well-known plateaus include Omalos, Anopolis, Askyfou, Tavri and Niato.
The White Mountains host a great variety of flora and fauna species, which are exclusively endemic (stenoendemic), not to be found anywhere else –not even in other parts of Crete. The areas on the southern side of the mountain range are covered with cypress, oak and pine trees, whereas humid areas favour the development of chestnuts, planes and other aquatic plants.
