60-64 Assiniboia Residential School Junior Team
The Assiniboia Residential School opened its doors on Academy Road in Winnipeg in 1958 with a small population of approximately 120 Indigenous students from Manitoba and Northern Ontario.
The man in charge was Father Omer Robidaux, a once-promising forward in the Montreal Canadiens organization. Under his watch, sports would play an important role, with one very key Robidoux rule … poor grades meant no play.
Young Catholic College grad, Luc Marchildon was hired to develop the school’s athletic programs and by 1959 Assiniboia teams were competing in the City leagues. With few of the players having formal hockey training, the first season was a rough learning experience against talented city teams.
Their intense workouts involved a military-style obstacle course. Winter runs to Assiniboine Park and on the ice by 7 AM were the norm.
The young hockey players of Assiniboia shared a common bond: they had been taken from their Cree, Ojibway, Oji-Cree, Dakota or Sioux homes as young children and placed in the residential school system. Separated from their families, hockey would provide a powerful emotional outlet.
