Note from member of the public says: In fact he shot down the Schutte-Lanz SL11.
On the night of 2/3 September 1916 over Cuffley, Hertfordshire, Lieutenant Robinson, flying a converted B.E.2c night fighter, sighted a German airship, one of 16 which had left bases in Germany on a mass raid over England. The airship was actually the wooden-framed Schutte Lanz SL 11, although at the time and for many years after, it was misidentified as Zeppelin L 21. Robinson made an attack at an altitude of 11,500 ft approaching from below and closing to within 500 ft, raked the airship with machine-gun bullets. As he was preparing for another attack, it burst into flames and crashed in a field behind the Plough Inn at Cuffley, killing Commander Wilhelm Schramm and his 15 man crew.

The Hertfordshire Way: Cuffley To Hertford 21 March 2016
The Hertfordshire Way is a 170 mile long distance footpath that encircles the county. This is a 12.5 mile section of the path between Cuffley and Hertford via the villages of Newgate Street, West End, Essendon, Little Berkhamsted and Bayford. I was very tired at the end of the walk. The walk took place in mainly cloudy weather on Monday 21 March 2016. Note that this is the original route of the Hertfordshire Way between Cuffley and Hertford, not the newer alternative route via Broxbourne.

Lt.William Leefe Robinson VC
William Leefe Robinson VC (14 July 1895 – 31 December 1918) was the first British pilot to shoot down a German airship over Britain during the First World War. For this he was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. He was the first person to be awarded the VC for action in the UK.
On the night of 2/3 September 1916 over Cuffley, Hertfordshire, Lieutenant Robinson, flying a converted B.E.2c night fighter No. 2693, sighted a German airship – one of 16 which had left bases in Germany for a mass raid over England. The airship was the wooden-framed Schütte-Lanz SL 11, although at the time and for many years after, it was misidentified as Zeppelin L 21. Robinson made an attack at an altitude of 11,500 ft (3,500 m) approaching from below and closing to within 500 ft (150 m) raking the airship with machine-gun fire. As he was preparing for another attack, the airship burst into flames and crashed in a field behind the Plough Inn at Cuffley, killing Commander Hauptmann Wilhelm Schramm and his 15-man crew.
Lieutenant Tempest D.S.O.
Lieutenant Tempest decided to ignore orders to patrol the Thames and decided instead to climb higher to where the airships normally flew.
At that point one of the Zeppelin, identified as L-31, was picked out by searchlights.
The crew of Lieutenant Mathy's airship tried to escape the beams, but without success.
Lieutenant Tempest was flying higher and faster than the Zeppelin and was able to close in and despatch a succession of incendiary bullets into its massive frame, setting it alight.
As the giant airship began to lose height and the flames took hold, some of Lieutenant Mathy’s crew were seen to jump from the Zeppelin as it fell to the ground.
Wulstan Joseph Tempest was later promoted to Major and awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO).
Second Lieutenant Sowrey D.S.O.
On the evening of 23 September 1916, Second Lieutenant Sowrey launched from Sutton Farm at 2330 hours in a Royal Aircraft Factory BE.2c to patrol toward Joyce Green. Flying at 13,000 feet, he spotted Zeppelin L32 at about 0110 hours and closed with it. He fired three drums of incendiary ammunition into the belly of the gasbag before it exploded into flame. There were no survivors from the aircrew; most of the bodies recovered were charred and burned. The burning wreckage at Billericay drew enormous crowds.[8] Sowrey received the Distinguished Service Order for his feat,[9] which was gazetted on 4 October 1916.[10] That same day, Temporary Second Lieutenant Sowrey was nominated for a regular commission in the Fusiliers.[11] Shortly thereafter, on 1 December 1916, he was appointed a Flight Commander with the accompanying rank of Temporary Captain.
