Best places to move/retire in South Carolina - 10 Reasons to retire/move to Beaufort, SC 2019
Why move to Beaufort, SC? Well, do you live among the hustle and bustle of a large city and are sick of the rat race? Then Beaufort, the gem of the lowcountry, just might be the place for you! Hi I'm Sue LeFavi with Ballenger Realty. Beaufort is a quiet, coastal town that has it all; beauty, scenery and charm.
10 reasons why Beaufort: 1) Water, water and did I say water! Beaufort is surrounded by Sea Islands, it offers many charming waterfront communities with gorgeous homes reflecting the lowcountry style architecture. You've got Habersham, Islands of Beaufort, Pickney Reatreat, Cat Island and Coosaw Point, just to name a few!
2) Beautiful beaches! Enjoy the 5 mile stretch of white, pristine beaches at Hunting Island State Park, it's surrounded by 1000s of acres of marshes, lagoons and forest. And if you love to camp, it's got the states most desirable campsites with all your amenities. Also, it has the only light house in SC that is accessible by the public! You can enjoy breath-taking panoramic views of the Atlantic coast!
3) Festivals throughout the year! We've got the Water festival, shrimp festival, A taste of Beaufort, the Gullah festival the soft shell crab festival, heritage days festival and the festival of trees just to name a few!
4) The awesome weather (except maybe July and August)! 6 months of the year we enjoy perfect temperatures averaging in the 70s and in the winter, the coldest it usually gets is in the 40s first thing in the morning.
5) Vibrant downtown! You are not going to find a super Walmart or a Red Lobster here, it's the shop local mentality with charming boutiques and local favorites for dinner offering the fresh shrimp or crab catch just brought in that day!
Enjoy entertainment and demonstrations on First Friday every month while stroll along the shops.
6) Great fishing! Field and Stream magazine named Beaufort one of the top 20 fishing towns in 2008. Whether you prefer deep sea fishing, Inshore fishing or just throwing a line of the dock, we have 100s of fish species including tuna, snapper, flounder, trout, sharks and red fish. Or, as many local do, you can enjoy crabbing just off the dock!
7) History! 304 acres of the town has been designated a National Historic Landmark. Going back 500 years ago, with the discovery of the area by the Spanish, Beaufort was the site of the 2nd landing on the north american continent by Europeans, the first being one year earlier with Ponce Da Leon in St. Augustine, FL.
8) Friendly people! Yes, the southern charm is no joke, it a real thing and it's evident the minute you arrive. People are friendly and gracious here. Don't be surprised if you're strolling in your neighborhood and a neighbor rocking on his/her front porch invites you in for wine:30 or tea time!
9) Downtown waterfront, come by boat or car. Beaufort has a beautiful, quaint, exciting and safe downtown, completely walk-able with convenient parking. Spend the day walking the historic district along the waterfront and pursuing the shops. And did I mention the great restaurants downtown?
10) Arts culture. Beaufort is full of artists and galleries exhibiting all forms of studio art. In addition, the center for fine arts at USCB puts on a packed schedule of plays, musicals, chamber music, movies, symposiums and even hosts the Beaufort Interntaional Film Festival.
And if these alone aren't compelling reasons to move here, Southern Living Magazine recognized Beaufort as one of the prettiest towns of 2018!
I hope this helps you decide if Beaufort is for you!

Are you thinking about relocating or retiring to Beaufort, South Carolina or the surrounding area? Its southern charm has so much to offer, with many diverse neighborhoods and landscape to choose from. Hi, I’m Sue LeFavi with Ballenger Realty and I’d like to share a few of my favorite waterfront communities with you.
Batter Point is just located a few miles southwest of Beaufort’s historic district on the riverfront, which is full of reward winning historic homes, boutique shopping, quaint restaurants, and in close proximity to the University of South Carolina Beaufort. This neighborhood has approximately 300 homes that overlooks the waterways and marshes of Battery Creek. 300 year old beautiful oak trees and coastal palms surround this Low Country neighborhood. You can enjoy the natural beauty strolling through the neighborhood, as well as enjoying many amenities which include a large swimming pool, community clubhouse, tennis, and boat storage. Battery Point also has a community boat dock, a boat launch, picnic areas, and fishing.
Next, we have Pinckney’s Retreat. It’s just a few miles from downtown Beaufort. This used to be an old private plantation. Its beauty is seen in the 400 year old oak trees covered in Spanish moss. Pinckney’s Retreat is a little bit smaller waterfront community with only 77 home sites, and all of them feature that Low Country architecture nestled in a sanctuary full of wildlife. The amenities here include everything from a pool, a grilling area and retreat house, kayak station, community dock, and plenty of walking trails to admire the gorgeous, tranquil scenery.
Another beautiful and popular community down the road from Pinckney Retreat is Islands of Beaufort. It’s a gated waterfront community with never ending charm situated in a park-like setting. It’s an excellent community for working professionals and retirees. There’s approximately 72 homes as well as 30 lots still available if you’d like to build your dream home. Amenities here include a swimming pool, clubhouse, fitness center, tennis courts, a playground, and two community docks. Both Pinckney’s Retreat and Islands of Beaufort are close to each other, just three miles south of downtown Beaufort.
Now, on to one of my favorites, Habersham. It’s located about eight miles west of downtown Beaufort. In 2018, Coastal Living named Habersham one of the top 20 places to live in the entire United States. As you enter this community, you’ll feel like you’re walking into a mini Main Street in Disney World with all the charm and friendliness, but added natural beauty with the large oak trees, parks, and greenspace. This is a larger community, with over 600 homes which all reflect the elegant Low Country architecture. It’s very inviting to stroll down the street and get to know your neighbors. Amenities here include the Main Street Marketplace, with shops and restaurants, waterfront parks and community dock, a swimming pool, playground, and a clubhouse.
Now, my all time favorite, Oldfield. This is a magnificent community that offers luxury living at its finest. It’s a gorgeous self-contained community of over 860 acres on the bank of the Okatie River and the heart of the Low Country. When you drive up to the gate, you will be blown away by the picturesque setting of acres of iconic white picket fences housing the most gorgeous horses. It’s located in a town called Okatie, which is halfway between Hilton Head and Beaufort and just a very short drive to Old Town Bluffton. All the homes in this gated community reflect the Low Country charm and elegance. This community has it all. World-class golf, fishing and hunting, an equestrian center that welcomes all riders and boarders, the sports club, which features a gym, a heated lap pool, a large outdoor pool, and tennis facilities. You can end your day at the River Club, enjoying a panoramic views of the Okatie River over a delicious Low Country dinner. This is a very inviting community, where move in ready homes are available, as well as the ability to build your dream home with one of their award winning builders.
If you’re interested in any of these prestigious communities or would like additional information about the area, please reach out to me. I would love to help you find your dream home in the heart of the south.

Coffin Point Road(Avenue of Oaks). One Half Mile Long. Leading to the Coffin Point Plantation
Coffin Point Plantation, is a historic plantation home located in the Frogmore area of Beaufort County, South Carolina, USA, was once a prosperous Sea Island plantation. It is estimated that the home was built around 1801, and like many early 19th century homes in the area, features a tabby foundation. One of the homes more striking features is the one-half mile avenue of oaks that leads to the home. The first resident of the home, Ebenezer Coffin, was born in Boston in 1763, eventually moved to South Carolina and then settled at Coffin Point.
Coffin's son Thomas Astor Coffin was in charge of the plantation until Union occupation of St. Helena in 1861. Prior to the Civil War Coffin Point was a well-known cotton plantation on the Carolina coast, having a reputation of being well managed and prosperous.
• 1861 – The Coffins were among the sea island plantation families who fled in advance of Union troops, abandoning all their Beaufort County holdings
• 1862 – Cotton planting at Coffin Point Plantation became part of the Port Royal Experiment, a program of the United States government designed to train and educate the newly released slaves on the sea islands. Within a short period of time, this plan was terminated
In the early 1890s U.S. Senator James Donald Cameron, a Republican from Pennsylvania and Secretary of War during the Grant administration, bought Coffin Point. Listed in the National Register August 28, 1975.
