Melanie
My name is Melanie Waters, I'm Chief Executive of The Poppy Factory. The Poppy Factory is a charity that creates paid meaningful employment for disabled veterans and we do that by having the privilege of being able to make The Royal British Legion's remembrance products here in the factory, and we do that all year round, every year, for Remembrance Day.
We have been in operation for over 90 years - we were founded in 1922. Our founder, Major Howson, decided that there were many disabled veterans who didn't have the opportunity to work, so he built a factory and created opportunities for disabled veterans to gain employment so they could support their families. We make up to 44 million poppies each year, nearly one hundred thousand wreaths, and just short of a million crosses for The Royal British Legion as well. So as you can imagine, it's an all year round activity!
Today we employ just over 30 veterans and dependents of veterans here in the factory. We have a wider team of about 50 in total, but over the years, in our heyday in the 30s and 40s, we were employing over 300 men to make all of The British Legion's products.
Old fashioned radio recording
We break into our review of the news to express the hope that you will buy at least one of the poppies made by men wounded in the last, and the present wars to commemorate remembrance day. It's a symbol to us all that this year we must give more than ever.
Melanie
The Poppy Factory doesn't just exist here at The Poppy Factory, The Poppy Factory creates paid meaningful employment opportunities for veterans all around the UK and we have an employability team who help veterans back to work in their own communities. And that's how we came to be working with Transport for London. The challenges that veterans face trying to find work, when they may have a disability, are often just starting with a lack of confidence, concern over what they may or may not be able to do in the workplace. They may not have had a civilian job before so sometimes it's quite daunting.
Simon
I was discharged on medical grounds from the army and at the age of 35 I thought that was me on the scrap heap. But I've now got a new career which I'm enjoying, now I've got a structure in my life - I'm working Monday to Friday - and it's made me believe that there is a future out there again.
Mark
In TFL, everybody was always ready to help. Everybody was always coming and rubbing my shoulder and asking if I needed any assistance with anything. Those are the kind of qualities that really appeal to me.
Melanie
If you've had a military career and you're trying to move into a civilian career it can sometimes be difficult to understand what your skills really are. Do I have skills that are transferable, how do I relate those to an employer? And if I have a disability how do I ensure that the employer can help me manage my condition, or help me manage in the work place?
Kevin
Businesses and companies would do well to look for ex-Servicemen. They shouldn't think that they're going to get totally institutionalised people who can't think for themselves. That's not the case.
Simon
I would tell companies to give ex-Service personnel a chance. You know, we've got lots of experience which could benefit most companies out there.

Why do we wear poppies?
Many of us remember the fallen from the Great Wars and other conflicts by wearing a poppy.
The poppy is the enduring symbol of remembrance of the First World War.
It is strongly linked with Armistice Day (11 November), but the poppy’s origin as a popular symbol of remembrance lies in the landscapes of the First World War.
Poppies were a common sight, especially on the Western Front.
They flourished in the soil churned up by the fighting and shelling. The flower provided Canadian doctor John McCrae with inspiration for his poem ‘In Flanders Fields’, which he wrote whilst serving in Ypres in 1915.
It was first published in Punch, having been rejected by The Spectator. In 1918, in response to McCrae’s poem, American humanitarian Moina Michael wrote ‘And now the Torch and Poppy Red, we wear in honor of our dead…’.
She campaigned to make the poppy a symbol of remembrance of those who had died in the war.
Artificial poppies were first sold in Britain in 1921 to raise money for the Earl Haig Fund in support of ex-servicemen and the families of those who had died in the conflict.
They were supplied by Anna Guérin, who had been manufacturing the flowers in France to raise money for war orphans.
Selling poppies proved so popular that in 1922 the British Legion founded a factory – staffed by disabled ex-servicemen – to produce its own. It continues to do so today.
The Poppy Factory in Richmond, London was established in 1922 to provide employment for disabled servicemen after the First World War.
The work consisted of making the poppies, crosses and wreaths for the annual Remembrancetide.
It continues today to make remembrance poppies, crosses and wreaths, enabling wounded, injured and sick ex-Service men and women in finding paid, meaningful civilian employment.

REMEMBRANCE poppy - WikiVidi Documentary
The remembrance poppy is an artificial flower that has been used since 1921 to commemorate military personnel who have died in war, and represents a common or field poppy, Papaver rhoeas. Inspired by the World War I poem In Flanders Fields, and promoted by Moina Michael, they were first adopted by the American Legion to commemorate American soldiers killed in that war. They were then adopted by military veterans' groups in parts of the British Empire. Today, they are mostly used in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, to commemorate their servicemen and women killed in all conflicts. There, small artificial poppies are often worn on clothing leading up to Remembrance Day/Armistice Day, and poppy wreaths are often laid at war memorials. In Australia and New Zealand, they are also worn on Anzac Day. The Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal has caused some controversy, with some—including British Army veterans—arguing that it has become excessive, is being used to ma...
