80. Canal Icebreaker - Winter Cruising on a Canal Narrowboat
Winter is coming, and narrowboat Silver Fox turns canal icebreaker as winter cruising on a canal narrowboat gets underway.
We depart from Hassall Green top lock after Shaun has a go on a potters wheel with hilarious results! We make our way down the Wheelock Flight of locks, part of the Cheshire Locks (or Heartbreak Hill), towards Wheelock where we moor up for the night.
The next morning, after temperatures plunged to -6C, the canal is iced over! We set off towards Middlewich, cutting a noisy path through the ice. We check out the Sandbach Flashes, the salt mining history of Middlewich, and we moor in the noisiest place ever!
Thanks to Steve and Andrew from the Potters Barn in Hassell Green. You can find out more about them on their website:
Thanks to the Canal and River Trust for allowing us to use a photograph of Lock 62.

The Swan at Lavenham Hotel & Spa – Fall in Love with Lavenham
Lavenham oozes medieval charm. Soak up crooked buildings, with lead-lined windows and impressive timbers. Why not visit the church of St Paul’s and St Peter’s and enjoy a walk around the lovely grounds? To top it all, the village was used as one of the film sets for the famous Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows movie. After a stroll enjoy something scrumptious at the award-winning Swan Hotel or relax in the popular Weavers’ House Spa.

Asylum Carwash | An 8 hour installation project by Tina Gharavi
(Digital Video, 8″, 2007)
Asylum Carwash is an eight hour installation exploring the working lives of refugees and economic migrants who have recently moved to the UK. The film documents a full day in the life of men who work at a carwash.
The carwash is hard work but carries a sense of pride and freedom. A refugee or economic migrant has the right to employment in the UK thus becoming economically self-sufficient and contributing to the British Economy.
However, some people seeking asylum or undocumented migrants are prevented from working by UK laws. Some take up work in the 'black economy' which carries particular dangers and few protective rights; consider the tragedy of the cockle pickers at Morecambe Bay.
Q. How often do we think about what people are forced to endure in order to survive?
This piece forms part of a traveling exhibition, delivered through the Engaging Refugees & Asylum Seekers project; a partnership project between National Museums Liverpool, Salford Museums and Art Gallery, Tyne & Wear Museums and Leicester City Museums Service.

Stone Carving Course Highlights - 6th to 10th of August 2012

Stone carving of an infant ??
In May 2009 Archaeologist & Historian James Balme recovered a stone carving from the river Bollin in Cheshire. Following subsequent cleaning and restoration of the stone effigy James continued his research into the origins of this important discovery of what may prove to come from the Bronze Age, Iron Age or Roman period of British history. See for yourself for the first time the carving being held by James giving the viewer the chance to see just how big the statue actually is !!!!
The carving seems to represent a child wrapped in swaddling and this is made even more apparant as James cradles the effigy for the first time since finding it buried deep in the bed of the river Bollin. The carving seems to be on an exact scale of a small child of approximately 12 months old.
New reasearch continues into the origins of this major discovery by James.
