Yoga StudioTour with Stephen Ewashkiw: The Practice Bali, Canngu, Bali, Indonesia
This stunning practice space was opened in 2016 by Octavio Salvado and the teachers at the studio in the Tantric Hatha tradition.
Classes levels range from classes for new students to advanced practitioners, and they also have meditation classes, film nights, and life coaching.
It’s a really special place - have a look around.
PS. Sorry it’s so shaky. If someone wants to buy me a gimbal it would be a welcome addition to my carry-on suitcase. Donations welcome...

200h Yoga Teacher Training with The Practice Bali
At the end of our last 200h Yoga Teacher Training program we sat down with some of our students to ask about their experience.
We asked why they were interested in attending Yoga Teacher Training, why they chose The Practice Bali, how their perception of yoga (and life) shifted as a result of their experience, and what they planned to do with the teachings going forward. This is what they said.

Bali Hinduism Offering - Daily Spiritual Practice
One of the primary 'Daily Spiritual Practices' of the Balinese Hindu is making 'Offerings' or 'Ceremony' to the God's.
FREE 30 Guided Meditations:
The Hindu people are extraordinary, their Daily Spiritual Practice is fundamentally based on their principles, which honor their belief that we live in a karmic Universe. They believe there is order to this Cosmos, known as dharma, along with a disordering force called adharma. Their life's work is to reach a balance between the two, as to end the cycle of reincarnation and to attain the state of Moksha. Therefore, they believe that we have responsibility to God, to Mother Earth, our families and community. They believe that there are harmonic energies and chaotic energies or angelic entities and demonic energies, aka Adhara. As they do believe in One God, they also believe in many Gods. They have a God for just about everything... a God for rice, a God for education, there are high Gods and lower Gods, etc. They are seeking harmony and balance in this life in order to advance to more freedom, but in this they also have great responsibility. In fact I asked one of the locals what the difference was between Buddhism and Hinduism and they said it was 'responsibility.' They felt that Buddhism was primarily about seeking the God within and connecting to Source, but that it lacked the responsibility of one to their families and their earthly responsibility. Someone could decide to be a Buddhist and relinquish all their duties for personal bliss of their spiritual journey. Whereas, a Hindu isn't able to give up responsibility until they are older in life and have completed their duties with their families, then they can seek God only.
In the Hindu practice, they believe there are three layers to the cosmos...
The highest layer is Suarga, which is in the Godly realm. So, when you look at the temples, at the top is an empty chair which signifies the emptying of ones mind to connect to this realm. They honor this by giving daily 'offerings' to the Gods at the temples. These temples are everywhere.... They are in the North East section of each families home, each village has a temple and every farm, hotel, restaurant, etc. has a temple for 'offerings.' They do believe in One God along with multiple Gods. Their highest God is called Saang Hyang Widhi Wasa. There are a plethora of aspects of the Godly realm, everything from Shiva, which is the masculine aspect of all things in the universe as well as the feminine, Parvati, which is the love of the entire universe.
The Second layer to the cosmos is the human realm called buwah. This is life, where one must take on the responsibility of our family and community. This is what is also considered 'yoga' practice.
The third realm of the cosmos to the Hindus is Bhur. This is considered to be their version of hell, the realm of demons or where spirits are that have been punished from not doing good in the earthly realm. The Hindu people honor this realm as well by making 'offerings' on the ground. I had to really ask around behind closed doors or late at night to find out more about this aspect of their practice. A few of the locals and Balian's explained that this is very well known within their culture, but do not disclose this to vacationers or foreigners, as to not disrupt any other belief systems or cause fear. This is one of the other great practices of the Hindu culture, they truly believe in allowing others their own religion and belief systems.
Hindu's do believe they are here to do good and serve their Gods and human duties. They are very disciplined and, at the same time, very happy people. They have very strict social and moral codes which include no intoxicants, mostly vegetarianism and abstinence of many indulgences. However, their educational system has very low standards, with about 50% illiteracy rate and high poverty. The minimum wage earns someone about $116 U.S. dollars a month. But, I have to say that the people seemed happier and healthier than the average American, by far!
May living your truth set you free!

Daily Spiritual Practice: Bali Hinduism - How to make an offering to the Gods
I was so blessed to be shown how the Balinese Hindu make the 'offerings' for their 'Daily Spiritual Practice.' The symbolism is so gorgeous, as they give it as a gift to honor the Gods and all spiritual realms. I learned how to sow with natural materials from Mother Earth, bringing all the spiritual directions to Oneness. Once, the offering was made we took it to the temple, where we prayed and lit incense to transform any negative to positive. What a beautiful practice!

Bali 1928, vol. III - Légong practice in the style of Saba and Bedulu
This silent film depicts two dancers practicing légong dance in the style of Saba and Bedulu. This silent film was recorded by Miguel Covarrubias circa 1930-1934.
We sincerely thank Rocio Sagaon Vinaver, Djahel Vinaver and José G. Benitez Muro for providing this film excerpt and giving permission to Edward Herbst, Arbiter of Cultural Traditions, and STMIK STIKOM Bali to use, publish and disseminate this and other films to a wider audience.
This film is the fourth of 28 film excerpts that are contained in the CD/DVD Bali 1928, vol. III: Lotring and the Sources of Gamelan Tradition, which is published in Indonesia by STIKOM Bali. The DVD titled “Sumber-Sumber Tradisi Tari dan Tabuh” (Sources of Dance and Music Tradition) include film excerpts about légong, barong, Rangda, gendér wayang, gambang, jogéd bungbung, méndét, rejang and gandrung.
This Bali 1928 volume is also accompanied by a CD containing 23 gamelan compositions of Semar Pagulingan, Calonarang, Palégongan, Gendér Wayang, Gambang and Gandrung from Titih, Kuta, Kaliungu, Pura Kawitan Kelaci and Pagan that were recorded for the first time in Bali in the year 1928.
The CD also contains a PDF essay titled “Lotring and the Sources of Gamelan Tradition” written by Edward Herbst, based on years of research. Audio restoration from the original 78 rpm records was done by Allan Evans of Arbiter of Cultural Traditions in New York.
Bali1928.net is the official channel of the Bali 1928 Project, Restoration, Dissemination and Repatriation of the Earliest Music Recordings and Films in Bali that is a collaborative effort involving Edward Herbst as project coordinator, ethnomusicologist and principal investigator, with Arbiter of Cultural Traditions in New York, directed by Allan Evans, and STIKOM Bali, coordinated by Marlowe Makaradhwaja, in Indonesia.
Supported by The Research Foundation of CUNY with a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, this project will result in five volumes of CDs, DVDs, and cassettes in Indonesia and the U.S.A., as well as providing archival audio-visual-text resources online. The project has also benefited from support by The Ford Foundation, The Asian Cultural Council, U.S. Fulbright Scholar Program, AMINEF-Jakarta, Ray Noren, The Bali Purnati Center for the Arts, and STIKOM Bali.

Yoga in Bali, Authentic or ?
On an island where Yoga is every where you turn you’ll see signs for: “Yoga and Beer” “Sunrise Vanyasa” “Yoga on the Water” “Yoga on a Volcano” “Relax and Yoga”..... so on and so forth.
Where do the Balinese Hindu’s stand with their connection to this spiritual practice? Was yoga brought to the island by Balinese traditions or was it brought on by the westerners?
What does “yoga” even mean?….
I traced my thoughts to get A Deeper Understanding to Yoga in Bali, Indonesia.
