A Tourist's Guide to Geraldton, Western Australia
Part 2 of our Western Australia trip.
From Perth, we drive northwards towards the coastal town of Geraldton. On the way, we stop at the Pinnacles National Park.
In Geraldton (my home for a year as a 10-year-old in 1981), we see the sights.
Then we take a side-trip to the Hutt River Province, Australia's very own breakaway state. We say hello to the Royal Family (who also stamp our passports) and then head up to Kalbarri.

Australia Motorcycle Roadtrip EP 26 - a preview
I’m currently in Ubud Bali editing a few past projects including my recent motorcycle journey around Australia. I have about 10 more stories to edit on this project working my way along the north coast of West Australia.
In todays 5 minute episode I visit Australia’s only monastic town, New Norcia before heading along the inland ‘Midland Way’ to Geraldton and Kalbarri National Park.
Over the next two weeks I will be releasing the other episodes which will include locations such as Hutt River Province, the dolphins of Monkey Mia, snorkeling at Ningaloo reef, surfing in Exmouth, the search for a crystal pyramid in the remote Capricorn Ranges, Karijini National Park, a cattle station muster, the ancient petroglyths of the Burrup Peninsula, the resort town of Broome and the remote Gibb River Road.
All episodes will be reasonably priced at $3 AUD and will help support the completion of this independent production. It gets pretty action packed from here on in. Visit for more details

GE's on Perenjori ore train in Western Australia
Iron Ore that is mined from Extension Hill, Mt Gibson, is trucked 85 km's to a purpose built loader outside of Perenjori. It is then railed the 240 km's to port at Geraldton. The train consists of 90 loaded wagons, with a total weight of 5760t. The locos hauling it are narrow Goninan built P class, with 2450hp from a GE 12-7FDL power plant.
The first view shows P2506-P2509-2512 on no. 6721 loaded as it rolls sedately through Bowgada.
The trio are then seen as they climb the grade away from Morawa and approach Bell Jnc.
The final shots are as it passes through Canna.
The Prince of Western Australia - Travel Deeper Australia (Ep. 9)
There are a million things to do in Western Australia so I rented a car in Perth, and set out on a road trip! From the dunes of Lancelin, and Limestone rock formations of the Pinnacles Desert, to the Pink Lake and Kalbarri National Park heading north, Western Australia's landscape is absolutely stunning.
However, my goal was to travel deeper and learn more about the people who call this region home.
Thanks to the women at my Bed & Breakfast in Geraldton, I heard about one man in particular with an incredible story.
This man was Prince Leonard George Casley of Hutt River.
The Principality of Hutt River, previously known as the Hutt River Province, is a self-proclaimed micronation in Australia.
And although Australia doesn't recognize their independence, the principality claims to be an independent sovereign state and to have achieved legal status on 21 April 1970, after Prince Leonard didn't want to follow the new wheat quota laws.
As I mention in the video, he was a fascinating man!
Read about my time in Western Australia, things to do in the region, and more info on Prince Leonard and Hutt River, here:

Principality of Hutt River, Western Australia
The Principality of Hutt River is located in Western Australia but is not part of Australia. It seceded in the 1970's after a dispute over wheat quotas.
Located just north of Geraldton and south of Kalbarri, this country has it's own currency, stamps and they will even stamp your passport for you and provide visas.
An intriguing visit and a great lesson in History meeting Prince Leonard and his son Prince Graeme.

MK 15071 18.9m Rock Lobster Fishing Vessel
The latest cooperation between Global Marine Design, Fine Entry Marine Aluminium Boat Builders and Oceaneer Marine Brokers has produced the stunning new cray fishing vessel Opah for John Servaas and Sons. John was heavily involved in the early design process and the result is a highly functional commercial fishing vessel, which has been constructed to a very high standard by Tim and the team at Fine Entry.
The build required Global Marine Design to develop a whole new rock lobster fishing hull and aluminium Marine Kit. Opah features a more upright stem which allows for an extra fine entry and greater efficiency at low speeds. The traditional GMD deep forefoot and warped hull bottom to low deadrise aft give a silky smooth ride and great load carrying abilities.
The total of 5,000l between the two live cray tanks gives capacity for 50 baskets of valuable catch, plumbed with experience by Fine Entry Marine to ensure minimal dead-loss. The 58m² workdeck holds 150 cray pots or 9.0 tonnes of deck cargo, in addition to the full live tanks.
Opah, named after the sunfish, is set to give the Servaas family many tireless years of fishing out of Jurien Bay and the unforgiving West Australian coastline.

Independent Education Union of Australia. July 2014
In July, 2014, The Independent Education Union of Australia (Melbourne, Australia), have continued their support the FWEC by contributing the funds for 11 wells for the need in the rural village of Siem Reap to have a clean drinking water from a reliable source. The wells are built on the own property of a family and they share the water with the other families around. Thank you so much for your continuous support.
Clean water is one of the most basic needs for survival. Although most of Cambodian has plenty of water, what is available to the majority of families is either natural surface water or water made available in shallow, hand dig, Pit Well. Both of these sources are filled with mud, insects, and disease, and covered over by even dirtier water during the yearly floods. Having clean water from a reliable source not only allows families to have water for cooking and drinking but also allows for bathing and laundry, all of which reduces the causes of disease and illness. In addition to better health and hygiene, the families will have the opportunity to plant an additional crop that does not rely on seasonal flooding for irrigation. This addition crop creates a more balance diet and creates an economic opportunity by enabling the families to sell excess produce at the market.
Thank you again for your generous support and help the poor people who less fortunate in the rual area of Siem Reap. On behalf of a Founder/Director with all teams of FWEC and the Cambodian people, we are really appreciate of your generosity support. God blessing you!

A 'friendly fire' incident left five U.S. Special Operations forces and one Afghan soldier dead on Monday in one of the deadliest incidents in the US-Afghan war since a helicopter crashed in December.
Investigators are looking into the likelihood that friendly fire was the cause, said Pentagon Press Secretary John F. Kirby in a press conference.
The accident took place as U.S. and Afghan troops were patrolling the Arghandab district, a Taliban stronghold in Zabul province on Monday night, the Washington Post reported.
After the mission came to an end, the soldiers were ambushed by a group of Taliban fighters as they waited to be picked up by helicopter. The U.S. troops called in an air strike.
A B-1B bomber soon arrived and dropped bombs in the area, killing five American service members and one Afghan soldier. There were no Taliban casualties in the airstrike.
The Taliban has released a statement confirming that they were involved in the ambush.
The Pentagon has launched an investigation into the incident.
