CARNAVAL DE QUÉBEC | Quebec City Winter Carnival
This past weekend we had the privilege of taking part in the Quebec City Winter Carnival (Carnaval de Québec). As the premier winter festival in Canada (and one of the largest in the world) it is an annual event that brings in hundreds of thousands of participants willing to brave the cold. Bonhomme, the jolly face of Carnaval, represents the appeal of the festival for both younger and older generations by giving warm bear hugs to children while cracking witty jokes with adults.

During our full day of embracing everything Winter Carnival has to offer we had the opportunity to go dog sledding, ice fishing, horse-drawn sleighing and tobogganing. To warm up we devoured peanut butter and chocolate laden BeaverTails and grilled fish while sipping on hot chocolate and Caribou (a sweet Québécois alcoholic beverage composed of red wine, hard liquor and maple syrup). We noticed families and couples enjoying cross country skiing, hockey, sledding, tubing and human Foosball. If that wasn't enough the impressive ice sculptures, dotted all over the grounds, are magnificent pieces of art that can be admired up close or from a distance; some pieces were being designed/carved right before our very eyes. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed Quebec City Winter Carnival and left wondering why more destinations around the world don't embrace winter the way Quebec City does!
CARNAVAL DE QUÉBEC | Quebec City Winter Carnival Travel Video Transcript:
Welcome to Quebec City! We are here in the winter capital of the world. And it is carnival which means everyone is out embracing the cold and embracing the winter fun.
Alright, so what are we doing next? We're going to be doing something I've wanted to do for years. We're going to dog sledding! Woo!
Go, puppies go!
Steer it.
Go, puppies!
Good puppies.
Come on, puppies.
We're going ice fishing. We're going to be catching our lunch today.
Ready to fish? I'm ready. I've got my bait. I've got my fishing rod. Let's do this.
They ate your bait.
They ate it and didn't come up.
Let's go get some more.
That is not very good fishing.
I know. That's really bad fishing.
Okay, round two. Let's get ourselves a fish.
Oh, we have a fish and I feel kind of bad.
We got one.
I know I eat fish but I feel a little guilty right now.
Now it is time to cook it.
Lunch, right here.
Just warming up.
Here is our catch of the day. This is the big reveal. You can see the steam coming off.
That smells really nice. I know, I think they've put seasonings on it. Oh, yeah. That looks good.
Have it. Oh, I can't see. The smoke is going in my eyes. Alright, first bite.
Mmmm.
How is it? That's amazing.
Can you look at the camera?
They put some onions and spices inside and a little bit of butter. It's really good.
I think it is time for a romantic sleigh ride for two.
So right now we're getting ready to go inside Bonhomme's ice palace. Let's go visit him.
I even once went to Mexico. It's a little bit warm. When I got there I was about eight feet as I am usually and when I came back I was five foot four.
I melted a little bit.
Is that a video? Let's do something memorable.
Hello, my friends from Kingston. We're with Audrey right now. We invite you to come to the biggest winter carnival in the world in Quebec City. I love you all and wish you a Joyeux Carnaval.
I don't know about you but I'm getting hungry. It's time for a Beavertail.
It looks like a few other people have the same idea.
They have a Reese's pieces beavertail. I think that is the one I'm getting.
Oh my, what do we have here? Reese's pieces Beavertail with chocolate and peanut butter and a hot chocolate because I really need to warm up.
Show me that Reese's Pieces Beavertail. Oh, my gosh that looks amazing. I wish I could capture the smell on video.
Alright, unfortunately all things come to an end. We've had an absolutely marvelous day out here at the carnaval. It's been so memorable. Now it's time to go home and warm up.

Quebec City Winter Carnival Experience
For 3 weeks of the winter, Quebec City is transformed into a giant carnival filled with activities, shows, games, and food. One of the big events I was able to participate in was the snow bath where 60 of us stripped down to our swimsuits to party in the snow with Bonhomme in front of a massive crowd.

So when did you arrive in Quebec? Two days ago.
Hello. You're not too jealous? No. Okay. Hahaha.
Cheese. Is that a video? Yeah, let's do something memorable. Audrey. And you're from? Kingston, right?
Yes.
Okay.
Hello my friends from Kingston, we're with Audrey right now and we invite you to come to the biggest winter carnival in the world in Quebec City. I love you all and wish you a Joyeux Carnaval.
Woo!
So my friends, you've seen my kick right? Get your cameras ready. I'm going to kick it for you. So this is where I train. I hold onto to this and I do my kick. I've practiced that so many times that I don't have to hold this anymore. You want the kick? Yeah. You guys want the kick? Oh, yeah! Say it again. Yeah!
Get your cameras ready. I know I'll have to do it a couple of times because you won't be ready enough. You ready. One, two, three. Woo!
Did you guys get it?
Joyeux Carnaval!
Go ahead. This is my museum. This is some of my museum. Some of my artifacts over the years.
This is my restroom. Can we say that? Restroom? No. No, not really eh? This is where I rest.
So I can stand right here but not for too long because I'm going to melt. Alright.
Bonhomme? Bonhomme? There is a question here. Yes. Somebody, where are you from? Toronto. You see where their priorities are. She's wondering, well actually ask him.
Where do you go pee? Hahaha.
Hey, are you recording this? Okay, I'll have to have a political answer then.
I don't.
I don't have time to do this. I just keep it for myself because I'm being made of snow and ice and it helps to keep it in. There you go. That's a great answer.
I wish you a great day at my carnival. I love you all and wish you a Joyeux Carnaval!
Merci, bye Bonhomme.
Bye-bye.

Crazy almost Insane! “QUEBEC WINTER CARNIVAL – CARNAVAL DE QUEBEC”
Crazy and Insane! “QUEBEC WINTER CARNIVAL – CARNAVAL DE QUEBEC”
It’s crazy – it’s almost insane – but you’ve got to be there because you’ll love it!
Quebec Winter Carnival stays for last almost 20 years as our highlight of Winter Celebration in Canada. We’ve tried to get there every single year – even almost 2,000 km round trip from Toronto is time and energy taxing. However to visit Quebec city during this gorgeous Winter Celebration is always rewarding – this year same as 15 years back – and hopefully even for next 15 years to come. Energy of the crowd of the Carnival together with all other attractions - as frozen Monster Waterfalls, Quebec Ice Hotel and Ice Sculptures – this all bring the energy of crowd to it’s peak during this final Carnaval de Quebec Parade.
During two weeks of Carnival some 80,000 up to 100,000 visitors are visiting Quebec City – not only from province of Quebec and all other provinces of Canada but even from most of the East Coast's States of USA.
Quebec Winter Carnival is definitely something what one should experience at least once in the lifetime!
Cheers and see you in Quebec next year!
Jiri
Winter Carnival In Québec, Québec, Canada
The striking Chateau Frontenac hotel is one of the main locations of the festivities. Carnival is an annual gathering with sleigh rides and wintry sports such as ice climbing. Re-live the good old days, with skating, curling, and snow slide adventures that you can enjoy right in the middle of the city! Québec City has been informally celebrating Carnival since about 1894 and it's been almost 50 years since it became the organized event, as we know it today.

(2019 Quebec Winter Carnival) . Winter Carnival February 2019 Quebec City Canada
Québec City’s Hottest Winter Carnival
Every year, thousands of visitors flock to the Québec Winter Carnival to enjoy a host of activities for all ages, including night parades, snow sculptures, shows, and skating. Bonhomme Carnaval is the ambassador of this winter celebration. Come join the party February 8 to 17, 2019!
ICE CANOE RACE at Quebec City Carnival (le Grand Défi des Glaces)
Cold, ice and frigid waters? These are things most people avoid; however, at Quebec City Carnival the legendary ice canoe race is what many consider to be the main event. Courageous teams brave the elements to compete against each other along the St. Lawrence River. Having had the opportunity to try ice canoeing with Audrey, we both have absolutely mad respect for the athletic prowess and sheer bravery of the participants. There are not many things I've tried before that have scared me quite like being out on the river dodging massive slabs of ice. The skill of the participants to navigate the waters is truly impressive.

In terms of the event, crews of five athletes push their canoe across giant slabs of ice and row in waters featuring tides of over 15 feet and ice blocks weighing several tonnes. If it sounds like madness let me assure you - it is!
For maximum traction on the ice, athletes wear special shoes featuring bolts screwed to the bottom. Fiberglass canoes are a minimum 250 pounds ranging in length from 6 to 8.5 meters. Considering ice canoeing once featured wooden canoes merely meant for transportation, the sport has truly evolved over the years!
The Association des Coureurs en Canot à Glace du Québec (ACCGQ) was formed in 1984 to organise and standardise races. Six races are accredited by the ACCGQ: La Grande Traversée Casino de Charlevoix, La Course en canot du Carnaval, La course de la banquise de Portneuf, Trois-Rivières Extrême, le Défi Canot à Glace Montréal, and le Grand Défi des Glaces. The latter is the biggest event. It is run during the Quebec Winter Carnival, at Quebec City every February.
ICE CANOE RACE at Quebec City Carnival (le Grand Défi des Glaces) travel video transcript:
One of the most exciting events of Quebec's Winter Carnival was the ice canoe race.
This event is exactly what it sounds like. Teams hit the frigid waters of the Saint Lawrence river with their canoes and race through a mix of ice, slush and water.
Originally, a means of winter transport, ice canoeing has become a sport for the bold and brave. Having had the chance to try this ourselves we had some serious respect for the teams competing.
Here is a look at this legendary event.
