Prince Philip remembers his Danish roots with new portrait at Windsor Castle
Prince Philip remembers his Danish roots with new portrait at Windsor Castle
STANDING in the Grand Corridor at Windsor Castle, this new portrait of the Duke of Edinburgh is sure to draw compliments.
Painted by artist Ralph Heimans, Philip is wearing the sash of the Order of the Elephant, Denmark’s highest-ranking honour.
The duke has a close association with the Nordic country as he was born a Prince of Denmark, as well of Greece, before becoming a naturalised British subject in the 1940s.
His grandfather, George I of Greece, was a Danish prince born in Copenhagen, while his great grandfather Christian IX was king of Denmark from 1863 to 1906.
Mr Heimans, an Australian-born artist who painted an official portrait of the Queen to mark her Diamond Jubilee, said: I feel very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to paint Prince Philip and hope the portrait does justice to his unique character.
The almost full length portrait of Philip has been set in the castle's grand corridor and at the end of the walkway is the Tapestry Room where the royal's mother, Princess Alice, and maternal grandmother Princess Victoria were born.
The artist added: Aesthetically, the natural light and heritage backdrop of the Grand Corridor at Windsor Castle provided a compelling mood. I hope people enjoy the work as much as I enjoyed producing it.
The painting will form part of a retrospective exhibition of the artist's work which is being staged at the Museum of National History at Frederiksborg Castle in Denmark next year.
Part of the attraction aims to explore the historical and cultural connections between the royal families of Britain and Denmark.
The portrait will also go on display in the United Kingdom some time in 2018. “I hope the portrait does justice to his unique character,” said Mr Heimans.
It was painted in the year Philip officially retired from public engagements and will go on display in the UK.

Royal Windsor RHS Coronation Arch
A STROLL ALONG THE LONG WALK IN WINDSOR TOWARDS THE NEW CORONATION ARCH
An archway decorated with 4,000 roses has been installed near Windsor Castle.
The floral arch is part of a six-piece 9m (30ft) willow walkway planted on the Long Walk in Windsor Great Park to mark 60 years since the Queen's Coronation.
The display, which also features six crowns at Cambridge Gate, is expected to remain in place until early October.
The idea for the project came from the chairman of the Royal Windsor Rose and Horticultural Society who wrote to the Queen, its patron, to seek permission.
The six arches and crowns containing wildflowers, one for each decade, were woven on a local farm before being assembled in front of the royal residence.
Once the display is dismantled, the society plans to sell the arches and crowns. Proceeds will go into its legacy fund, a bursary to sponsor young gardeners through horticultural college every year for the next 60 years.
The project is a collaboration between the Royal Windsor Rose and Horticultural Society, the Windsor and Eton Town Partnership and the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.

The Queen - A Life In Film 6/9. Part 6 - Head of the Commonwealth
A consistent theme of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II has been her abiding interest and dedication to the Commonwealth. As its symbolic head, she has overseen the transition from Empire to a 'family of nations', with an enthusiasm bordering on devotion.
Despite frequent predictions of the death of the Commonwealth, the Queen has played a central role in keeping it not just alive, but relevant. So why is the Queen so committed to this disparate association - and how does she retain the allegiance of the heads of member states?

Happy Birthday to Her Majesty the Queen!
It's her Official Birthday on June 10th but her actual birthday is April 21st. Do you know where she was born?
The Queen’s Official Birthday 2017 will be celebrated with Trooping the Colour. She wore a bright Green outfit to the Queen’s Official Birthday 2016.
Queen Elizabeth actually turned 91 years old on Thursday April 21st 2016 - her ACTUAL birthday.
The longest reigning Monarch currently spends her time between Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace but this isn’t where the future Queen was born!
The Duke and Duchess of York, subsequently King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, gave birth to their first child at 2:40am on the 21st April, 1926.
They were living at 17 Bruton Street in Mayfair, London.
She was named HRH Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary of York after her mother, paternal grandmother Queen Mary and great-grandmother Queen Alexandra. At the time, Princess Elizabeth was third in line to the throne after her father and uncle.
The house at 17 Bruton Street has been demolished. On the site today stands Hakkasan, a restaurant where dim sum can cost you £68!
On the wall outside, a plaque, added as part of the Queen’s diamond jubilee celebrations in 2012, reads:
On this site at 17 Bruton Street stood the townhouse of the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne where Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor, later to become Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, was born on 21 April 1926.
She celebrates the day in Windsor by unveiling a plaque marking The Queen's Walkway.

Celebrations mark Queen Elizabeths 90th birthday
Celebrations are taking place around the UK on the day the Queen turns 90.
Crowds of cheering people lined the streets in Windsor as the monarch took part in a walkabout, and royal gun salutes have been fired from each of the UK's capital cities.
The Prince of Wales recorded a special radio broadcast for the day, in which he read an edited passage from William Shakespeare's Henry VIII.
On Twitter, the Queen thanked senders of #HappyBirthdayYourMajesty tweets.
In another tweet, the Queen said: I send my best wishes to those who are celebrating their 90th birthday... on this shared occasion, I send my warm congratulations to you.
The Queen, who was accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh during her tour in Windsor, was presented with a birthday cake at the Guildhall by the Great British Bake Off champion Nadiya Hussain, who had created an orange drizzle cake with a butter cream and marmalade filling.
The monarch also unveiled a plaque marking The Queen's Walkway - a 6.3km trail that links 63 significant points in Windsor.
The trail was designed to recognise the moment on 9 September 2015 that the monarch broke the record held by her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria, by being on the throne for 63 years and seven months.
Later on Thursday, the Queen will light symbolic beacons in Windsor.
Most of the gun salutes were due to be 21 shots - the standard royal gun salute - at locations including Hillsborough Castle, Cardiff Castle, and Edinburgh Castle.
In London, the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery staged a 41-gun salute at midday in Hyde Park. And the Honourable Artillery Company fired a 62-gun salute across the Thames from the Tower of London at 13:00 BST.
Prime Minister David Cameron said the Queen had been a rock of strength for our nation and the Commonwealth, as he and fellow politicians paid tribute in the House of Commons.
Mr Cameron said: Her Majesty The Queen has lived through some extraordinary times in our world.
From the Second World War... to the rations with which she bought the material for her wedding dress.
From presenting the World Cup to England at Wembley in 1966, to man landing on the moon three years later.
From the end of the Cold War to peace in Northern Ireland.
Throughout it all, as the sands of culture shift and the tides of politics ebb and flow, Her Majesty has been steadfast - a rock of strength for our nation, for our Commonwealth and on many occasions for the whole world.
The reading by Prince Charles, which has been broadcast by the BBC, is an extract from a speech by Archbishop Thomas Cranmer to King Henry VIII after the birth of the future Queen Elizabeth I.
Earlier, a photograph was released showing the monarch with young members of the Royal Family.
The image, one of three taken by celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz, shows the Queen surrounded by her five great-grandchildren and her two youngest grandchildren.
The other Leibovitz photographs show the monarch walking in the grounds of Windsor Castle with four of her dogs and sitting with her daughter, the Princess Royal..
The image of the Queen with the young royals was taken in the Green Drawing Room, part of Windsor Castle's semi-State apartments just after Easter.
In it, the Queen - in the tradition of royal portraiture - holds her youngest great-grandchild Princess Charlotte, who is 11 months old, in her arms.
Also appearing in the image is two-year-old Prince George, Zara Phillips's two-year-old daughter Mia Tindall, who holds the Queen's famous black handbag, and Peter Phillips's daughters Savannah, five, and three-year-old Isla.
The Queen is also joined by the two youngest of her eight grandchildren - the Earl and Countess of Wessex's children - James, Viscount Severn, eight, and Lady Louise Windsor.
Highest peaks
In the evening the Queen will be accompanied by Prince Philip, the Prince of Wales, and the Duchess of Cornwall, as she lights the first of more than 900 beacons across the UK and the world to mark her birthday.
Members of the Army cadet force will take beacons to the top of the highest peaks of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Some of the beacons will be specially-built gas-fuelled structures, while others will be traditional bonfires or braziers on top of tall wooden posts.
To coincide with the Queen's birthday, the largest exhibition of the Queen's clothes and accessories ever shown in Scotland will open at the Palace of Holyroodhouse later.
The display has been selected to cover the Queen's life and reign, and includes evening and day wear.
On Friday, US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama will be joining the Queen for lunch at Windsor Castle.
