Visit &
Welcome to Ludlow Castle, one of the finest medieval ruins in England. Set in the glorious Shropshire countryside at the heart of the superb, bustling black & white market town of Ludlow. Walk through the Castle grounds and see the ancient houses of kings, queens, princes, judges and the nobility – a glimpse into the lifestyle of medieval society.
The Castle, firstly a Norman Fortress and extended over the centuries to become a fortified Royal Palace, has ensured Ludlow’s place in English history – originally built to hold back unconquered Welsh, passing through generations of the de Lacy and Mortimer families to Richard Plantagenet, Duke of York. It became Crown property in 1461 and remained a royal castle for the next 350 years, during which time the Council of the Marches was formed with responsibility for the Government of Wales and the border counties. Abandoned in 1689 the castle quickly fell into ruin, described as ‘the very perfection of decay’ by Daniel Defoe.
Since 1811 the castle has been owned by the Earls of Powis, who have arrested further decline, and allowed this magnificent historical monument to be open to the public. Today the Castle is the home to Ludlow’s major festivals throughout the year and open for all to enjoy.
The video showcases a new roof on the Round Chapel.

Ludlow Castle - The Gateway To Wales - History
Recently we visited the fantastic Ludlow Castle in Shropshire. Its history is remarkable. It has played a role in defending England since the Norman Conquest by William the Conqueror in 1066. A castle first stood on this site during the 11th century, and throughout the years it has played host to many sieges, kings and queens and also grand festivities.
The most important part of Ludlow Castle was the defence that it played for England. Ludlow Castle was set up as part of the Marcher Earldoms. This was a series of defences that were established during the Norman period, in order to protect England from the Welsh. Throughout the Tudor Period, Ludlow played host to many of England's most famous kings and queens. Prince Arthur, the son of Henry VII and brother of Henry VIII enjoyed his honeymoon at Ludlow with his wife Catherine of Aragon. Also, Mary I or Bloody Mary would oversee the Council of the Marches too. The Council of the Marches was a group who would oversee Wales, and deal with many different disputes in Wales and also finances. Throughout the English Civil War, Ludlow was besieged by Parliamentarians. Looking back to the Wars of the Roses, it also was the scene of the nearby very bloody Battle of Ludford Bridge, which resulted in a Lancastrian victory for Henry VI.
Even during the Second World War, Ludlow Castle was used for American soldiers to play baseball inside the inner bailey of the castle. Overall it has had a remarkably interesting history. Join us as we show you around, and tell you the history behind, Ludlow Castle, The Gateway to Wales.'

Part 3 The Story of Saxon Shrewsbury Up to 1066 and All That
Story of Saxon Shrewsbury.
Pt. 3 - Saxon Shrewsbury Up to 1066 and All That!
Scrobbes-byrig (Shrewsbury) flourished as a Saxon town.
It had its own mint in the early 900s, during the reign of King Alfred's son Edward the Elder.
The mint produced coins for the Saxon kings, and, in 2015 the Shropshire Star reported on an auction of one of the coins.
This coin, worth a penny when it was created in Shrewsbury more than 1,000 years ago, was sold for more than £500 in 2015.
The mint had closed by the time of the Norman invasion in 1066.
In 1006 the Kingdom of Pengwern was organised into shires (smaller areas of administration). and Scrobbesbyrigscire (Shropshire), was created.
So, even in 1006, people were still evidently talking about the town of scrubby bushes (Scrobbes-byrig) for many years to come.
...That's quite a tongue-twister! Try saying it out loud. NOW!
AND, it gets worse!
...You got it! They even named the whole COUNTY after those scrubby bushes (alders)!
That happened when Scrobbesbyrigscire, became the County name of what we now call Shropshire.
Moving on to a new subject.
The County Sheriff was a powerful man, and acted on behalf of the king.
He had the authority to collect taxes and raise armies for attacks into Wales.
He was also responsible for enforcing law and order.
Presumably attacking Wales was a perfectly respectable thing, in those days!
Maybe, it was tit for tat?
Also in 1006 King Aethelred the Unready spent the winter in Shrewsbury.
Translation of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles states Unready to mean “poor counsel”, “evil counsel” or “unwise.
By the time of the Norman Conquest in 1066 the town was important enough to be called a city, and Included within its walls four churches and two hundred and fifty-two houses. But, it's was still only the size of one average housing estate!

Royal snub: How Princess Anne did not tell the Queen about huge life decision - News 247

The Princess Royal famously kept her relationship with Mark Phillips a secret and wanted to make sure she kept the timing of her engagement announcement in her own hands. To do this, she did not tell the Palace press officer or even her own mother and monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, about her plans. Robin Ludlow, who was the Queen’s press secretary in 1972 and 1973, explained how he knows this in the 2002 Channel 4 documentary ‘The Real Princess Anne’. He said: “I set about asking firstly the princess if she was going to get engaged and she said she wasn’t. “And when I asked the Queen whether she thought the princess would get engaged, she said she wished she knew. “So whenever the press asked me what was going on, I was able to say to them, as far as I was concerned, very truthfully, that she wasn’t going to get engaged.” This infuriated the press, who felt like they had been lied to. It soured Anne's already troubled relationship with the media, with one journalist claiming her actions made them “go for her”. Harry Arnold, who was a royal reporter for The Sun at the time, said: “The romance was denied on a daily basis by Buckingham Palace. “And I remember one particular press officer saying ‘No, Princess Anne is not getting engaged today, she’s not getting engaged tomorrow and she’s not getting engaged next week either.' “And two days later the engagement was announced! “And that makes the press pretty cross because they’re simply being lied to, and it makes them, in effect, go for her.” The press had previously accused Anne of being bad-tempered and sulky. She famously told reporters to “naff off” when they were taking pictures of her during an equestrian competition. She later told Michael Parkinson on ‘Parkinson in Australia’ that she did not regret her language, because the photographers had been “asking for it”. Anne’s engagement was to Army officer Mark Phillips, who was also a competitive horse-rider. They reportedly met at a party for horse enthusiasts in 1968 and started dating in secret. Anne even used to drive around with Mark in her horse box, so no one would see them together. They announced their engagement on May 29, 1973. Trending On November 14 the same year, they got married at Westminster Abbey in a ceremony that was beamed around the world and watched by an estimated 100 million people They had two children together, Peter and Zara, and were married for 18 years, but separated in 1989 and divorced in 1992. They were both romantically linked to other people in the final years of their marriage and Anne remarried just a few months after the divorce was finalised. She is now married to Timothy Laurence, a former Royal Navy officer.
