Out & About Northern Ireland Visits Cong - Setting for 1951 Film The Quiet Man
In 1951 John Ford's greatest movie The Quiet Man starring John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara and Barry Fitzgerald was made. It was set in the beautiful west of Ireland with filming being centered in the village of Cong on the Mayo-Galway border.
Much of the film was filmed on the grounds of Ashford Castle - the town and castle area remain little changed since 1951. Cong's connection with the movie make it a tourist attraction.
Quiet Man Cottage Museum is a must visit for the Quiet Man enthusiast which will give the visitor a total Quiet Man experience as if they were actually 'on-set'. Located by the river at Circular Road, Cong, between actual locations used for the filming, the ground floor of the cottage has been designed as an exact replica of 'White-o-Mornin' Cottage.
A beautiful village with a very interesting connection!

'The Quiet Man' cottage - County Galway, Ireland
Belfastman launches online petition requesting that the iconic ‘Quiet Man’ cottage in County Galway be FULLY RESTORED to its 1952 movie glory – both as a timeless tribute to the cast and crew of this classic movie and as Ireland’s own salute to its uncrowned ‘Queen’ – the late Maureen O’Hara herself.

The Quiet Man Cottage As It Stands In ( May 2014 )
The cottage made famous in 'The Quiet Man' lies in ruin despite best efforts by the Irish government and local tourist authorities to buy it from the owner.
The cottage made famous in 'The Quiet Man' lies in rack and ruin despite best efforts by the Irish government and local tourist authorities to buy it from the California-based owner.
Jimmy Deenihan, the Irish Minister of Arts and Culture has written urgently to Gregory Ebbit, the California based Canadian who bought the property in 1985 but who has let it go to ruin.
The cottage known as White O Morn was where John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara filmed so many scenes for the 1952 classic 'The Quiet Man.'
The Irish government want to restore the cottage and make it a major tourist atraction in time for 2013 when 'the Gathering' a massive get together of Irish clans from all over the world takes place. ( Today we are in 2014 and still nothing happens.)
