Platret Selected to Compete at NCAA Regional in Lubbock
EDINBURG – The NCAA Men’s Golf Selection Committee announced on Monday that University of Texas-Pan American Broncs freshman Nicolas Platret has been selected to compete in the 2015 NCAA Regional in Lubbock from May 14-16 at the Rawls Course.
“It is great,” Broncs head coach Armen Kirakossian said. “We had been anxiously waiting to find out the site and we are looking forward to it. It is nice that it is in the state of Texas. I think it helps him a lot to be able to play in the same type of grass, same conditions and same temperatures. We are excited.”
Platret makes his first appearance in the postseason after winning the Western Athletic Conference Individual Championship and he is the first Bronc to qualify for an NCAA tournament since David Steffan did so in 1978.
Platret surpassed five other golfers on the final day of the WAC Championship with a career-best five-under par 67 to claim the individual title with a three-round score of 211, which is tied for the 11th lowest mark in program history. His final round 67 is also tied for the eighth lowest score in program history.
“I think he is just excited and ready to go play,” Kirakossian said. “He is one of those guys who likes to get out on the golf course and compete. That will be right up his element. He is ready for it. He loves when the field gets tough and he performs well in the biggest moments.”
There will be six regional tournaments to determine the 30 qualifying teams and six individuals not on those qualifying teams who will compete in the finals. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to finals in Bradenton, Florida from May 29-June 3 at The Concession Golf Club.

Hub City Disc Golfers: How a Hobby Helps a Habitat
When out for a stroll at a local park, Lubbock residents might notice distinctive metal baskets adorned with layers of chains sitting atop pedestals in the ground scattered around. These contraptions are used for disc golf, one of the country’s fastest-growing recreational sports.
Often played on nine or 18-hole courses, the object of the game requires players to toss flying discs into the baskets in the fewest number of throws possible, according to the Professional Disc Golf Association website. Each contestant starts by throwing their discs from each hole’s corresponding tee box.
Justin Pena, Texas Tech University alumnus class of 2012, is a member of the Lubbock Windrider Disc Golf Club. He along with his father, Moses Pena, and brother-in-law, Ethan Aleman, are active members of the Lubbock disc golf community.

PoliTech Official Statement: Reponse to video critics (Nov 4 2014)
PoliTech official statement Nov 4 (Politically-Challenged:Texas Tech Edition):
I’m sure you’ve already seen the video we released last week, Politically-Challenged. If you haven’t, please check it out on our YouTube channel. Over the course of just 5 days the video has reached quite an audience nationwide.
Texas Tech University, and the majority of its students know, that this video is not a criticism of the school’s academics, but instead a bold message to college students everywhere to be more politically involved.
We are confident that if we were to perform this same experiment in any other university in the nation, we would receive similar answers.
Could these students have answered these questions correctly if they were on a written exam? We believe so. But the video shows that political matters are not what’s currently on college student’s minds. Instead, they are pre-occupied with useless pop-culture that is constantly being fed to them by today’s media.
PoliTech and its members stand behind our video 100%, and we will continue to bring political awareness to Texas Tech and the community of Lubbock.
Stay connected with us through our website and facebook page for updates on our next upcoming event this month!
