Taiwan Pingxi Sky Lantern Experience | Making A Wish @ Shifen Old Street
Today I got to visit Shifen Old Street in the Pingxi district of Taiwan.
It is about a 40 minute drive from Taipei city.
Originally built to transport coal, the Shifen Old Street stop has now become one of the most popular stops on the Pingxi rail-line.
It is probably because of its annual Lantern Festival around Chinese New Year. During the rest of the year, you can still purchase and launch lanterns along the railroad tracks. And that is exactly what I got to do!
I made a wish on a lantern with a brush and set it off to the sky.
I learned that sky lantern launching was once used as a signaling system for people living and working in the railroad industry.
There are several stores that sell lanterns but we picked one of the oldest and most famous shop called Grandma’s Sky Lantern Shop.
Single-colored lanterns are 150 NT dollars, 4 colored ones are 200. And the prices increase as you add more colors.
We picked a 4 colored lantern which had Red, blue, orange, and green.
Did you know each color has a meaning?
Red means luckiness
Blue means safety
Orange means success
Green means health
In addition to launching a sky lantern, you can enjoy local food and souvenir shops here. So if you are ever in Taipei this is a great place to visit!
We came here on a very very hot day in July. My sister had a bit of heat exhaustion so drink plenty of water during your visit!

台灣自2004年參賽以來，2008年台灣代表隊 FORMOSA、2011年 TPEC 以及2015年 U-TAIPEI ，都分別拿下世界第三名的亮眼成績，2017年則是由 Taichung City Hentai 代表台灣出戰，拿下世界第四名的佳績！今年將由哪一舞團拿下冠軍，將台灣之名迴響在世界總決賽會場之中？

Ximending Pedestrian Area was the first pedestrian area built in Taipei and the largest in Taiwan. It's a modern market space more popular for shopping than food and reminds of an open-air alfresco mall. The Ximending area is the source of Taiwan’s fashion subculture, and Japanese culture and has been called the “Harajuku of Taipei”.
The first tourist night market in Taiwan, Huaxi Street market is located right next to Longshan Temple. The name Snake Alley ( 華西街夜市) comes from the most famous item in this market - snake soup, a unique treat found only on Huaxi Street.
