The Red House Festival Preview 2018
Lucy Walker from the Britten-Pears Foundation talks about the special events planned at The Red House, Aldeburgh in June 2018.
They include:
Festival talks: Britten in America (daily at 1pm)
A 20-minute talk given by a member of the Britten–Pears Foundation team. In Week 1 (8-15 June), we look at some of the fascinating pieces Britten composed while living in America between 1939-1942, coinciding with their Festival performances. In Week 2 (16-24 June) we focus on Britten’s life in the bohemian household in Brooklyn, known as ‘February House’.
The Composer’s Place (daily 11am-4pm)
Complementing the Britten in America exhibition, the Archive will house an exhibition focusing on Britten’s return from the USA: his rediscovery of his Suffolk roots, and how he and Peter Pears made their home in this part of England.
Stories by the piano (8, 11, 18 June, 3pm & 21, 22 June, 11.30am)
Visiting American academic and vocal tutor Dr Justin Vickers will spend 10 minutes by the beautiful Steinway in Britten’s Library, discussing and singing from the ‘American’ music in Britten’s repertoire.
Britten & Song at Twilight (Wednesday 13 June, 7-8pm)
An evening encounter with some of Britten’s vast and varied song repertoire. Wander through the gardens and domestic spaces, discovering moments of song in recorded sound and in live performance. Visitors will experience an unconventional, unique ‘recital’ which takes place across the whole site.
Talk: Artists as Emigrants (Friday 22 June, 3-4pm)
To mark Peter Pears’ 108th birthday, art historian Dr Mandy Bentley discusses artists represented in the Britten–Pears Foundation collection in whose work the challenges and rewards of emigration have played a significant part. While each artist’s experiences and responses are individual, their various narratives draw out fascinating themes relating to identity and the role of ‘place’.
A House on Middagh Street (Friday 22 June, 7-8pm at the Pumphouse)
Did you know that Benjamin Britten once shared a house with WH Auden, Carson McCullers and Gypsy Rose Lee? The House on Middagh Street was where Gypsy wrote her pulp classic The G-String Murder and Britten composed Paul Bunyan, and it was a hive of activity for many other artists. Come and spend time in their eclectic company for an hour of readings, music, and unexpected interludes. Design and direction by Sarah Gabriel.

Sailors Path and Friston, Aldeburgh Walks, Suffolk Walks In England, UK
Sailors Path and Friston was about 7.5 miles in distance. The terrain of the route was a combination of field and woodland paths and tracks, plus some road sections. The walking was easy on level ground. Route finding was easy with obvious paths, good waymarking and good landmarks. There were 2 stiles to negotiate.

BEACH WILD CAMP | SUFFOLK COAST | FRISTON TO ALDEBURGH
I met up with a subscriber named Dan who is actually a Suffolk lad born and bred for this 12 mile 2 day walk with a wild camp on the shingle beach at Aldeburgh at the halfway point.
The weather was a little overcast and we had a bit of a breeze overnight and some fine rain in the morning but that soon blew over and the nice weather returned. We also stopped in Aldeburgh for a pint and some fish and chips before our wild camp (it just has to be done!) at the beach.
We saw some famous local landmarks such as the post mill and House in the clouds at Thorpeness, along with the Meare, before passing Benjamin Britten's Red House the following morning on the edge of Aldeburgh.
We followed a section of the old dismantled railway en route to the coast and found a derelict building related to the railway line. We even found a small wooden cabin in the woods on the return leg of the walk that contained several vintage items.
The entire walk was fantastic, full of variety and the camp was very relaxed and fun. Dan was a great companion for the trip and we got along like a house on fire! Many more trips planned together. Thanks! DO WELL!
