Red House Revealed
A pleasant surprise for passersby in the capital city on Wednesday as galvanised sheets surrounding the Red House came down, revealing the almost completely restored historic site - the country's original seat of Parliament.
The Red House has been under restoration for some 20 years, with a budget of over $441 million.
UDeCOTT assumed responsibility for the project in 2005 and Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley said recently that the project would be delivered by the end of the year.
The restoration works hit several snags over the years, causing delays.
The building has undergone extensive retro-refitting, excavation and the installation of new floors.
The original Red House was constructed in 1844 and was gutted by fire in 1903 during the Water Riots. It was rebuilt and reopened in 1907.
The Red House was temporarily replaced as the seat of Parliament in 2011, which was relocated to a space at Tower D at the International Waterfront Centre in Port of Spain.
Parliament is scheduled to return to the Red House after the building is officially reopened.

It involved installing Welsh Penrhyn slate and 20 ounce copper box gutters, flat seam, standing seam and bell shaped batten seam roofing. We trained the locals on how to do this work.

The bridge link between the Red House and its companion building, Cabildo Chambers, will not impede vehicular traffic along St. Vincent Street.
This, from the Urban Development Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago (UDeCOTT) in response to claims that the walkover is too low, and that it would cause structural damage to the Red House.
The link, which is being constructed to aid in the efficient daily operations of Parliamentary and Ancillary staff, was announced in December 2017 by Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley during a tour of the Red House.
UDeCOTT states that all the necessary approvals were acquired from Town and Country Planning, City Engineers Department of the Port of Spain City Corporation Building Permit, and Ministry of Works Structural Design.
