Tim Whitehead - Turner and the Thames: The Thames at Isleworth & Pavillion
In 2009, Tim Whitehead was Artist in Residence at Tate Britain, where he closely researched Turner's 'Colour Beginnings' watercolour sketches, drawing links between the process of improvisation and composition, and Turner's approach to the canvas.
Now, especially for the EFG London Jazz Festival and in celebration of Turner's lifelong love of the great river, Tim has chosen eight locations along The Thames from which Turner has painted the River and filmed his improvisations. These spontaneous recordings will go on to form the templates of Tim's finished pieces and will culminate in two free Festival performances with his quartet; both on Sat 23 Nov.

11 Mysteries of Famous Icons That 90% of People Don’t Know About
There are certain works of art and architecture that are famous the world over. But if you study the history of some of them a little more intently, you’ll find that many of them contain a great deal of mysteries.
We decided to compile a list of some of the most intriguing ones. We were amazed at what we found out.
The top-floor apartment of the Eiffel Tower

He often used it to rest and receive guests. On one occasion, he had a long conversation there with Thomas Edison. The apartment contains a kitchen, bathroom, two bedrooms, and a living room, and, of course, boasts spectacular views. Today it serves as a museum, complete with waxworks of Eiffel and Edison.
The broken chain at the feet of the Statue of Liberty

It symbolizes freedom, democracy, and the repeal of slavery. It is for this reason that a broken chain lies at the feet of the statue — something often overlooked by the many thousands of tourists who go to see it.

But it’s believed that there is one other portrait painted by da Vinci himself, and this one is no copy. Interestingly, the second version is painted from a slightly different perspective. It’s possible that it was made by a different artist, or maybe several of them. According to experts, however, it’s more likely that this is simply an earlier version of da Vinci’s masterpiece.
The time capsule in Mount Rushmore

During the construction of this famous monument, architect Gutzon Borglum wanted to create a Hall of Chronicles inside the cliff face — a secret room where future generations would find the fundamental records of and information about the USA’s history. For this purpose, he excavated a cave behind the head of Abraham Lincoln. Soon after, however, Borglum died, and his plan was not completed.

Inside the very top there is a small attic-like structure used as a staging and break area for climbers: a basketball hoop, complete with backboard and net, which has been attached to a flight of wooden stairs. Climbers and Cast Members used the basketball court and staging area to prepare for scheduled climbs or to pass time when there was bad weather.
The Sphinx’s original appearance

It also had a nose and a ceremonial beard. The remains of these can be seen in British and Egyptian museums. Some experts believe that the Sphinx may originally have had the head of a lion or a dog, and a human face was only carved over this much later. This would explain the large difference between the proportions of the gigantic body and the small head.
The creation of the Leaning Tower of Pisa

One of the reasons for this mystery is the fact that it was built over the course of nearly 200 years. Historians are used to assuming the construction plan was developed by Bonanno Pizano, but a more likely candidate was Diotisalvi, who designed the baptistery located next to the tower which is built in the same style.
The face of Rembrandt’s Danaë

Moreover, the style of this particular painting was closer to many of his later works. It is only recently that explanations have been found for this mystery. When examined using x-rays, the similarity of the figure in the painting with Rembrandt’s wife is much clearer. It seems the painting was redone after his spouse’s death, at a time when he was infatuated with another woman, Geertje Dircx. The facial features of Danaë were changed in such a way that they combined both of his lovers’ features.
The name of the most famous tourist attraction in Britain

At present, no one knows for certain in whose honor the bell was named Big Ben. One theory goes that it was the nickname of a powerfully built man who managed the bell foundry where it was made. Another theory suggests it was named after Benjamin Count, a heavyweight boxing champion.

The sky in the painting The Scream
© wikimedia
The initial name of the legendary painting by Edvard Munch was The Scream of Nature. The artist wrote in his diary:
...suddenly the sky became blood-red; I stopped, feeling exhausted, and leaning against a fence, saw blood and tongues of flame over bluish-black fjord and a city...
In 2003, a group of astronomers put forth the theory that the bright scarlet color of the sky that so astounded the artist was caused by the eruption of the Krakatoa volcano in 1883.

London Mix - Part 3: Louisa Stathopoulou
motiroti and Watermans present London Mix as part of the UK 2012 Cultural Programme. Over four months, five artists worked with 300 young people from six West London Boroughs, to produce vibrant art works in digital media that are fresh and unapologetic, celebrating an urban landscape rich in the creativity, enterprise and humour of London's diverse young communities.
Filmmaker Steve Folorunsho followed the work in progress, interviewing artists and the young participants to create this documentary film that was screened as part of the final exhibition at Watermans, from 12th July to 28th September.
Part 3 features artist Louisa Stathopoulou working with young people from Brentford School for Girls, Isleworth & Syon School of Boys, All Kids All Sorts Youth Club and Orleans House HEART (Health, Education & Art) Young Parents Group.
