Venetian Fete (1960)
C/U of some Japanese lanterns hanging from wooden beams outside, panning left to show some women attaching decorations to a carnival boat. C/Us of the women arranging flowers and hanging lanterns on the same boat; a pagoda seems to be the focal point. Commentator tells us the spectacular Venetian Fete is held every two years here on the Royal Military Canal at Hythe in Kent.
Various shots of floats being finished off including an Eskimo scene; a 'savages' scene, where a man is putting some face paint on a young boy; a 'Mayflower' pilgrim ship, the BUAV float, with two dogs being petted and a snack bar float called 'Exploso Bar'. C/U of a balloon with an African face painted on it. M/S people sitting on the river bank watching.
The fete has obviously started as we see a float being towed by a rowing boat along the river before a large crowd; M/S of the float carrying the Mayor of Hythe along with actor Donald Sinden (who opened the event; he lived in a cottage in Hythe, trivia fans - and might still live there!) and two unidentified women (NB: Donald is not seen in C/U). The next float carries thirteen Mayors of Kent in full regalia, and lots of greenery - quite a comical sight! We then see the float carrying the Carnival Queen in a pink net dress, with two Carnival Queenlets in white at her feet.
Various colourful themed floats drift past: 'A Tale of Two Cities'; 'Madame Butterfly' (this is the one with the pagoda - it apparently took two months to build); what looks like a French Can-Can cafe scene; 'The Mayflower'; Edith Cavell leaving prison to face the firing squad; Arabian Nights scene (one of the best); 'The old woman who lived in a shoe' (I think it's a man); family watching television; 'School For Beatniks' (I think - sign says 'Down with Elvis'); 'Andy Capp at home'; 'The Ten Commandments'. All intercut with audience shots; children in the crowd eating toffee apples, holding balloons and so on.
Note: On file is a press release, descriptions of all floats in the fete, a list of the Mayors seen, correspondence and a rather snooty newspaper review. Cuts exist - see other record.

Thames Path - Source to London - Cricklade to Radcot Bridge - Day 2 of 12
Day 2 of 12 of an epic walking adventure through some of England's most beautiful countryside and incredible history. A walk that covers 186 miles from the source of the river in Gloucestershire to the Thames Barrier in the east of London via historic towns of Oxford, Henley and Royal Windsor to name a few.
Day Two - Friday 29th March Cricklade to Radcot Bridge
The Thames Path Challenge - 184 Mile hike from Source to London - Click on the image to watch the video of day 2 of the hike. An epic adventure
We had a long day ahead so we got up at 7am, in time for the continental breakfast which was included in the room price (English breakfast available for an extra £6).
We again visited Tesco Express in order to buy fruit and sandwiches for lunch. It was fairly cold and foggy for the first couple of hours this morning, then became a beautiful day. We followed the well signposted path, and after one hour45 minutes of walking arrived in the beautiful village of Castle Eaton. There is a large pub, The Red Lion, but unfortunately we were too early for the opening time of 12pm. We looked at the beautiful church, the graveyard of which backs onto the river.
The path from here to Lechlade is fairly obvious, sometimes by the river, sometimes along small empty roads, and across fields. Just before Upper Inglesham a new path has been completed which is not in our book or map. So now instead of having to walk down the side of the A361 the path continues through the countryside, past the old junction of the Thames-Severn Canal into Lechlade.
After an 11 mile morning walk we arrived in Lechlade at 12.30pm, and ate our sandwiches on a bench in the riverside park by halfpenny bridge. We carried on for another mile to the first of 45 locks along the Thames, St John's Lock. Here there is a statue of Old Father Thames, which has been moved from his original location at the source of the Thames. We crossed over the bridge and called in the Trout Inn for a cup of tea. It is amazing how large the Thames seems to have become, with lots of boats and canal barges being moored both before and after Lechlade. Lechlade is worth a visit and there are shops, bars, restaurants and accommodation, but we continued our walk.
We continued along the river bank past Kelmscott for 5 miles until we reached the Swan Hotel at Radcot Bridge. The bridge is certainly in a very picturesque location, parts dating from the 12th century making it one of the oldest bridges on the river. The Swan unfortunately does not have rooms at present, but there is a rumour that there may be in the future. We had booked to stay at The Old Crown Coaching Inn in Faringdon, which we thought was the nearest location for accommodation and food to the path at this point. Stage 2 in the book is from Cricklade to Lechlade, but we wanted to travel further. We phoned Faringdon Taxis who arrived promptly, charging us £10 for the fare for 3 miles to Faringdon.

Taxi Company
In the town of Faringdon there are 3 pubs, Indian restaurants, many take-outs and Tesco Metro. We opted for a lovely large portion of fish and chips in the Harbour Fish Bar.

How to photograph Pub Signs.
When you photograph a pub sign, you are inevitably shooting from below and pointing the camera upwards, and, more often than not, having to shoot at an angle as well. Unavoidably, therefore, what your camera records is not a rectangle but an irregular quadrilateral, with all four sides of the sign of different lengths and with no 90⁰ angles. Furthermore, there is bound to be a lot of extraneous detail. To correct these faults, you need to use photo editing software (PaintShop Pro / Photoshop / Photoshop Elements -- there may be others) and correct the perspective using a Perspective Correction / Transform tool followed by a crop. You can also correct for colour and/or contrast (especially useful where the sign has faded over the years) and possibly clone out distracting features (there are far better ways of doing this than using the clone tool, but that's another matter).
Ideal conditions for pub sign photography are overcast conditions to avoid unsightly shadows and as little wind as possible.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

David Copperfield Audiobook by Charles Dickens | Audiobook with Subtitles | Part 1
David Copperfield (version 2) Charles DICKENS
The story is told almost entirely from the point of view of the first person narrator, David Copperfield himself, and was the first Dickens novel to be written as such a narration. The story deals with the life of David Copperfield from childhood to maturity. David's father had died six months before he was born, and seven years later, his mother remarries but David and his step-father don’t get on and he is sent to boarding school. As David settles into life we are taken along with him and meet a dazzling array of characters, some of whom we will never forget and some of whom we won't want to remember!
