SEE at Red Monastery Tour in Sohag
The battle to save Egypt's Coptic Christian heritage
LEADIN:
Egypt's Coptic monasteries have traditionally been a safe haven for church treasures, from antique icons to rare manuscripts and murals.
But many have them have fallen into disrepair - through centuries of neglect and a scarcity of monks.
More recently, the rich heritage has come under attack from Muslim militants.
STORYLINE:
Here in Sohag, a city that lies on the west bank of the Nile, sits the Red Monastery.
Inside, is the ancient Anba Bishay church - a dimly lit 1,500-year-old structure modelled after Jerusalem's Church of Resurrection and whose walls bear some of the best examples of early Coptic painting.
It's been painstakingly restored and jealously guarded by Father Antonios and the five monks of his Red Monastery.
Little known and rarely visited, the church offers a striking example of the rich heritage of Egypt's Coptic Christians.
In the 14th century some priests gathered in this area, so Queen Helen, mother of the King Costantine, ordered for the construction of the monastery. Therefore the church is built with the same architecture of the Church of the Resurrection, says Antonios, who sees it as his personal duty to protect the ancient church.
The Red Monastery and its nearby sister, the White Monastery, were once united in a sprawling complex that was home to some 5,000 monks.
Both were deserted by the 8th century and were only been resurrected in the last 30 years.
The murals of the Anba Bishay church were completely covered in black soot when their restoration began in 2000.
But it's not just old age which is taking its toll on Egypt's coptic churches.
Here in in Abanoub in Assiut, some 400 kilometres (250 miles) south of Cairo, John the Baptist church stands weathered and scarred.
It is one of 40 churches that was attacked in Egypt in August my mobs of Muslim militants - angry about the perceived role of Christians in the ouster of the nation's Islamist president.
Inside, the church is stripped down to almost a shell - blackened in places - with air running freely through the now empty window frames.
With benches burned or looted, worshippers are now sitting on rented chairs with dirty red upholstery.
The members of the congregation at this church are defiant.
Other attacked churches have continued to say mass and conduct wedding ceremonies too.
It is very difficult for us to see the place where we pray is being treated in such a way (being attacked and burned). The psychological pain that the people went through is hard enough, says Reverend Father Boutros Refaat.
Instead of icons and murals, posters of Jesus and the Virgin Mary are in their place.
It would have been much easier fir me if they had burned my house because I can rebuild my house within a year, says Maher Nakhla, who's attending mass at John the Baptist church.
But it has been more than two months that committees have been inspecting the church. They know very well that they burned the church in a terrorist attack, and still they haven't taken any decision on whether they will restore the church or they will demolish it and then rebuild it, he continues.
The attacked churches were mostly in southern Egypt, an underdeveloped region with a combustible mix of powerful Islamic radicals and sizable Christian communities.
The attacks left Egypt's Christians filled with fear and feeling more vulnerable and persecuted than at any time in recent history.
Interestingly, the church has consistently maintained that the destruction of the churches was a small price to pay for freedom.
I think that the freedom of belief and the freedom of building places of worship should be organised under one law and that's what we wish, he adds.
But their prayers are even harder and louder than before.
