USA: NEW YORK: REPTILE RESCUE MAN
(29 Jun 2000) English/Nat
He's not your average pet shop boy.
Robert Shapiro, writer, T-shirt designer and animal lover, spends most of his time rescuing New York's wayward reptiles.
On an average week, his store in Manhattan may house up to 30 iguanas and 50 snakes, and an assortment of turtles and lizards.
Shapiro also finds homes for stray dogs, cats and rabbits, but concentrates on the cold-blooded creatures because, he says, they are the pets that are most mishandled and most misunderstood.
Located in the East Village area of new York's Manhattan, where residents are used to weird and wonderful neighbours, is 'Social Tees,' an unassuming T-shirt store that is also a refuge for a variety of reptiles.
The owner of the store, T-shirt designer Robert Shapiro, has a mission- finding homes for the creatures that are given up by their owners or found loose on the streets.
UPSOUND: (English)
Well, we're the proud owners of another iguana. We already have 31, why not one more? (Phone rings) Maybe that's 32.
SUPERCAPTION: Robert Shapiro, reptile rescuer owner
Shapiro says that many reptiles are sold by pet stores in New York to people who either don't know how to care for them, or grow tired, or even scared, of handling them.
Wrestling with this tame -and blind - West Nile Monitor lizard, Shapiro spent considerable time nursing the creature back to health after it's previous owner neglected and malnourished it.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
People throw them in fish tanks, don't know what temperature to keep them, don't know what to feed them, get bored of feeding them -some of these things try to bite them when they try to pick them up so they get tired of having them around at all and basically he was neglected when we got him, he's doing better now.
SUPER CAPTION: Robert Shapiro, reptile rescuer
At any time, Shapiro's store houses anywhere from a dozen to a hundred reptiles.
This 18 foot-long Burmese python was pregnant when it was brought to the store.
It's now fiercely guarding its 83 eggs.
Luckily for Shapiro, those 83 baby snakes already have homes to go to.
This small Chinese water dragon was brought in by its owner's parents, who were left stuck with the wily, sharp-toothed creature after their son went off to college.
Shapiro, a lifelong New Yorker who began his reptilian career more than 20 years, only has official permission to run a T-shirt store.
But he takes his chances, and he does it for love.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I like all animals, but reptiles seem to be very misunderstood and need a lot of help. They're sold in the pet industry and most people that buy them don't know how to take care of them.
SUPER CAPTION: Robert Shapiro, Store Owner, Reptile Rescuer
Every now and then, Shapiro himself goes out to rescue a snake or alligator - not unlike an urban 'Crocodile Dundee.'
Recently he came to the aid of Doctor Vicki Lanucelli, a psychotherapist, who came to realize that she could no longer feed her 10 foot long boa and python, without endangering her life.
(UPSOUND: (English)
That is definitely a 10 foot long Burmese python...where's the Boa?
SUPER CAPTION: Robert Shapiro, reptile rescuer
Although she was sad to see her pets go, Vicki knew that they would be better-fed by someone who was strong enough to handle them properly.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Since I'm alone, it's really hard for me to handle the Burmese because he's heavy and he's big. And, you know their feeding behavior is somewhat erratic so, I can't have pets like this if I'm afraid, you know, it doesn't work.
SUPER CAPTION: Doctor Vicki Lanucelli, snake owner
Rescues like this can take no more than ten minutes, but are not without danger and Shapiro takes no risks.
SOUNDBITE: (English)

What is the NATO Phonetic Alphabet? Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta....
The NATO phonetic alphabet, officially called the International Radiotelephony Spelling Alphabet, and also commonly known as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) phonetic alphabet, is the most widely used radiotelephone spelling alphabet in the world. We use this alphabet to clarify communication for maritime operations, domestic and international flights, and NATO Alliance Military Activities.
The system is simple, assigning names to the 26 letters of the English language and making a slight variation of the names of English numbers….

Reptiles Left to Die at PetSmart Supplier Mill
Subscribe to #PETA: ????Turn on ALL push notifications ????
Eyewitnesses found that reptiles were denied basic care, left to suffer with gruesome injuries, and cruelly killed at a PetSmart supplier.
Animals crammed into filthy, crowded plastic bins stacked into shelving units like old bank statements. Living beings deprived of water for days or even weeks. Sick and injured animals denied veterinary care. Emaciated, severely dehydrated animals desperate for water. Animals cruelly killed by being gassed or frozen to death. We've seen it time and time again at dealers that sell animals to pet stores, and now we've seen it again at Reptiles by Mack, a reptile mill in Xenia, Ohio, that breeds and sells frogs, lizards, turtles, and other animals to pet stores across the country, such as PetSmart.
This case is not unusual. Reptiles by Mack is the sixth animal dealer with ties to large pet store chains that PETA has exposed. PetSmart is well aware that investigation after investigation into its animal suppliers has found factory-farm conditions, filth, crowding, deprivation, neglect, cruelty, and prolonged, painful death. Yet it continues to sell animals and do business with these mills.
Please, pledge never to buy pet supplies from retailers that sell any animals. Let PetSmart officials know that you'll instead buy supplies from businesses that don't sell animals, such as Target, Walgreens, or online retailers:

New Association For Reptile Rescues
COMOX - A group originally formed to share its love and knowledge on reptiles has now turned into Vancouver Island's newest animal rescue society. The North Island Reptile Rescue Society was formed in 2008 but recently obtained society status because it's been accepting surrenders from Port Hardy to Victoria.
Club president Natalie Ramsay says the group frequently receives calls from other animal shelters on the Island looking for their assistance to take a variety of slimy and scaly creatures off their hands.
Last year the group took in 20 reptiles that were no longer wanted by their owners and so far ten have already been surrendered in 2010.
Ramsay says many of those surrenders are because breeders and owners realize how much work is involved in keeping creatures like snakes and lizards, especially given their special diets and complicated health needs.
Volunteer members also take the creatures into local classrooms to give educational talks to school children and to encourage their proper care.
The non-profit organization posts a list of reptiles up for adoption on its website:

Discovered Selling Wild Animals, Nature's Half Acre, Wichita Falls
A local small time pet store is discovered selling a wild captured snake. I was tipped off about this by a local who observed it and who had some experience identifying snakes. They had admitted to her that the animal was captured by someone and brought there, but they had the identification very much wrong. So wrong in fact that there is no such snake. I followed up to confirm the report and walked into this store with camera rolling. This isn't the first time I have seen such a thing from this store, known as Nature's Half Acre just outside of Wichita Falls, Texas. They've been notorious for taking things off the side of the road and putting a price tag on it. This took place last year, but with as busy as I get I don't always get video edited and uploaded. This establishment has been reported by myself and others to game wardens, but it's unclear whether the game wardens have ever tried to anything about it.
The Untold Truth Of Greta Thunberg
Sixteen-year-old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg has made it her mission to lower greenhouse gas emissions and make the world a greener, more sustainable place.
The young pioneer has galvanized youths and sharply criticized world leaders for failing to take climate change seriously. Here is the untold truth of Greta Thunberg.
According to The Guardian, Thunberg has been listening to climate scientists since she was eight years old. Stunned by the apparent indifference of adults and consumed by concerns about the future, she later fell into a deep depression.
It's important to note that Thunberg has Asperger's syndrome, an autism spectrum disorder often characterized by social awkwardness, difficulty interpreting social cues, and an obsessive preoccupation with a particular interest. As Thunberg told The Guardian:
I overthink. Some people can just let things go, but I can't, especially if there’s something that worries me or makes me sad.
In school, videos of starving polar bears and pollution reduced her to tears. She soon stopped going to school and even stopped eating.
She started by convincing her parents to become more climate-conscious. She bombarded them with graphs, and got them to watch documentaries and read books. As she puts it:
Little by little, that strategy worked. Thunberg's mother, a popular opera singer, ultimately quit traveling by plane and her father became a vegetarian. Keep watching the video to see the untold truth of Greta Thunberg!

Pastor Fights For Life After Deadly Rattlesnake's Bite | MY LIFE INSIDE: THE SNAKE CHURCH
SUBSCRIBE to Barcroft TV:
THE FORMER pastor of a snake-handling church has vowed to carry on handling serpents - despite almost dying after being bitten by a rattlesnake. Cody Coots is the ex-leader of the Full Gospel Tabernacle in Jesus’ Name church in Middlesboro, Kentucky, one of America’s only remaining snake-handling churches. The dangerous ritual had already cost the Pentecostal church its previous pastor, Cody’s father Jamie Coots, 42, after he was bitten by a rattlesnake and killed in 2014. The disturbing footage of Cody being bitten by a timber rattlesnake - the same snake that killed his his father - features in My Life Inside: The Snake Church, a two-part film from Barcroft TV. Cody was airlifted to hospital where he was eventually stabilised despite major swelling to his eyes, face and airways. Cody survived and recovered and, despite his ordeal, still attends the church and says he has no plans to give up handling snakes.

A Very Sad Case - Wichita Falls Reptile Rescue
Supporters, WFRR really needs your help now. The property we have been based on for the last 4 years has sold and we have to relocate QUICKLY. Like in the next 8 days, and as of now, no place to go. We are short of rent funds in obtaining an affordable location to move the rescue to. Please give what you can if you support the mission of this rescue/rehab org, whether it's $100, or $10. It all makes a difference to these animals, and whether this rescue survives through May 2013. I am already making preparations to shutter the rescue, placing things in storage and moving animals elsewhere and releasing them ahead of when they should be, in anticipation that we may not come through this situation. This would leave the entire North Texas and Southern Oklahoma area without a reptile rescue. I am the ONLY reptile specialized, and the ONLY horned lizard rehabilitator for a many hundreds of miles radius. Please help us, to help them.
