The Residency in Lucknow, India
The British were under siege for 147 days from a mutiny within the Indian army. Many people died...
The Residency - Lucknow
The British Residency of Lucknow is a famous historical landmark of this place. It is now in ruins and has been declared a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India. The British Residency was the place that served as a refuge for approximately 3000 British inhabitants during the time of the uprising of 1857. Lucknow was center of all British activities during the siege and the Residency became the monopolistic center of the British for almost 90 days.
The Residency still has within its walls, the graves of around 2000 British soldiers who died in the Revolt of 1857. The people of Lucknow tell intriguing stories of British who fled from their homes to seek shelter in these red buildings. Only a 1000 inhabitant survived this tough ordeal. On November 17th, the British troops led by Sir Colin Campbell defeated the Indian forces. Though they triumphed, it was victory in the true sense.
Today, the British Residency of Lucknow serves as a government office. The Residency also has a museum that is well-maintained by the authorities. One also finds the tombs Sadat Ali Khan, who was the first Nawab of Awadh, Kaisarbagh Palace and an observatory built for Colonel Wilcox, who was a British astronomer.

Present state
The Residency has been maintained as it was at the time of the final relief, and the shattered walls are still scarred by cannon shot. Even since Indian Independence, little has changed. The ruined building is surrounded by lawns and flowerbeds and is a tourist attraction nowadays. The cemetery at the nearby ruined church has the graves of 2000 men, women and children, including that of Sir Henry Montgomery Lawrence who died during the siege.
The Ruins of the British Residency
There is a weathered epitaph near the grave of Sir Henry that reads Here lies the son of Empire who tried to do his duty while another nearby grave reads Do not weep my children, for I am not dead, but am sleeping here. A light and sound show to display the history of the Residency is also played each evening.

The Lucknow Affair: The Residency with Mehru Jaffer
During our trip to Lucknow, we were thrilled to have author, journalist and dyed-in-the-wool Lucknawi, Mehru Jaffer lead us on two heritage walks. One of them was to The Residency, which was the centre of the action during the Siege of Lucknow in 1857. This video captures a few snippets from our rambling walk around this ruined landmark.
