What our Culture: MAHARAJA JAM NAGAR a legend, ITDC NEWS
WHAT OUR INDIAN CULTURE. watchout.
Digvijaysinhji Ranjitsinhji, a Rajput, was born at Sadodar on 18 September 1895, nephew of the famed cricketer K.S. Ranjitsinhji. He was educated at Rajkumar College, Rajkot, in Saurashtra, then at Malvern College and University College London.
Commissioned as second lieutenant in the British Army in 1919, Digvijaysinhji enjoyed a military career for over two decades.[1] Attached to the 125th Napier's Rifles (now 5th Battalion (Napier's), The Rajputana Rifles) in 1920, he served with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force, subsequently receiving a promotion to Lieutenant in 1921.[2] He then served with the Waziristan Field Force from 1922 to 1924; after a promotion to captain in 1929, he retired from the army in 1931.[3] However, he would continue to receive honorary promotions in the Indian Army until 1947, ending with the rank of lieutenant-general.
Two years later, Digvijaysinhji succeeded his uncle, who had adopted him as his heir. From 1939 until his demise, he was the longest serving President of Governing Council of The Rajkumar College, Rajkot.
During World War II, an Indian king set up a home away from home for Polish refugees and orphans: a Little Poland in India. His efforts saved the lives of more than 640 women and children.
The ravages of the Second World War left Poland a shadow of the country it once was. The nation was torn apart by destructive forces, its people held captive in concentration camps and countless of its children left orphans.
Overcoming grave obstacles and challenges, hundreds of Polish children (and women) managed to escape the dire circumstances in their country. Contradictory reports exist on how the kids planned their escape. However, it is known that they were turned away from every country they approached for help.
When their ship docked in Mumbai, the British governor too refused them entry. Maharaja Digvijaysinhji Ranjitsinhji Jadeja of Nawanagar, who had heard of the plight of the refugees, sought to help them and pressurized the British government to allow the refugees to disembark. Frustrated by the lack of empathy and the unwillingness of the government to act, the Maharaja ordered the ship to dock at Rosi port in his province. Thus began the story of Little Poland in India.
On disembarking, the Maharaja warmly welcomed the Polish women and children, saying “Do not consider yourself orphans. You are now Nawnagaris and I am Bapu, father of all the people of Nawanagar, so also yours.”
RAJKOT: The special bond between Poland and Balachadi town, ..
Balachadi and Jamnagar.
RAJKOT: The special bond between Poland and Balachadi town, 25km from Jamnagar, will be relived by by half-a-dozen World War II
survivors, who were among the 1,000 orphaned Polish children given refuge by Jam Saheb Digvijaysinhji, the king of erstwhile
Navanagar (now Jamnagar) after their country was invaded by German Nazi soldiers in 1942.
Now in their 90s, the six survivors are expected to arrive in Jamnagar on September 30 with their spouses to participate in a day-long
celebration of the special bond Poland has with India. The event is being organised by the Polish government, which is celebrating 100
years of independence in November this year.
It will be a diplomatic function at Balachadi where nearly 40 people from Poland, including senior ministers and diplomats, will
participate along with Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani and Jam Shatrushaliyaji, son of late Jam Digvijaysinhji. Poland was invaded
by Hitler's Nazi forces and Stalin's Red army in 1939. Most of the families from Soviet-dominated areas were sent to labour camps from
where they were loaded in trucks and sent to Turkmenistan, Iran, Afghanistan and India. Many families made it to the refugee camp
while Jam Saheb Digvijaysinhji gave shelter to nearly 1,000 children and built the school for them.
Jam Saheb had also arranged for seven cooks from Goa to cook food that was less spicy for these children, who went on to stay in
Balachadi, the summer palace of the royal family, for four years
The six survivors coming to Jamnagar are the part of a documentary A Little Poland in India, produced by film maker Anu Radha.
The event is a progression of film on the Polish children who are now in their 90s and featured in my film are being invited to share
their stories of their childhood. It was an idea very close to my heart, and these Polish survivors as we call them, feel such enthusiasm
whenever they are given an opportunity to visit Jamnagar and Balachadi, Anu Radha told TOI.
Andreej Stuczynski, third secretary embassy of Poland in India, said, Poland and India have a special relation. It's a people-to-people
contact thanks to the support of Jam Saheb. It's beyond the standard of economic or political relations. Jamnagar district collector.
10_Mary Unveils the Apocalypse: Sardis
Tonight we’re going to look in detail at the fifth letter to the angel-bishops of Sardis. Sardis is the Church of the wealthy, that is, North America, particularly United States and Canada. Sardis was one of the great cities of primitive history. In Greek lore it was simply the greatest of all the cities. It’s nothing less than shocking than to say that this wealthy, generous, busy, influential Church is dead. Who can even count the organized works of charity in the Catholic Church of the United States? And the Churches are full compared to Europe. Jesus will compare Europe to the lukewarm Laodicea. But He is calling the USA and Canada dead! Dead in sin! Religious orders are in need of reform. The hour of trial is coming.

Twenty years today since Royal Yacht Britannia was decommissioned: 20 facts about her life
Twenty years today since Royal Yacht Britannia was decommissioned: 20 facts about her life
DABBING away a tear, the Queen said an emotional farewell to her beloved Royal Yacht Britannia as it was decommissioned at Portsmouth Dockyard on December 11 , 1997.
Tony Blair’s new Labour government had decided to retire the glamorous ship after 44 years in service to save money – a decision that the Duke of Edinburgh has since said was wrong.
However, 20 years on, the ship has since found a new lease of life as a tourist attraction in Leith docks, Edinburgh, and now plans are afoot to build a new Britannia to help boost trade deals following Brexit.
Here we reveal some fascinating facts about the vessel…
1 Her Majesty’s Yacht Britannia was launched by the Queen from the John Brown & Company shipyard in Clydebank, Glasgow on April 16, 1953.
A 30,000-strong crowd braved the rain to watch as she announced the name and smashed a bottle of Empire wine against her bows.
Champagne was considered too extravagant due to post -war rationing.
2 Designed to be a symbol of the nation’s pride and the flagship of the Royal Family, Britannia was the 83rd royal yacht.
The first was HMY Mary, built in 1660 as a gift from the Dutch for Charles II.
Britannia was the second to bear the name, after a racing cutter built for the Prince of Wales in 1893.
3 Then the largest yacht in the world, Britannia cost £2million to build, was 412ft long and weighed in at nearly 6,000 tonnes.
It was designed to be a “floating palace” which could be used as an embassy at sea and entertain heads of state.
Over the years those who dined aboard would include Sir Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela and Bill Clinton.
4 With no rivets showing, teak decks and brass fittings, Britannia was supremely elegant – unlike most ships her name wasn’t even on the side.
Aboard there was a state dining room capable of seating 52 guests, a state drawing room, a large sun lounge and private sitting room.
5 Although grand, the Queen intervened to cut the cost of the yacht’s extravagant décor in the original plans commissioned by her father King George VI, who died in 1952.
Both she and the Duke of Edinburgh personally approved fabrics, paintwork and even door handles and lampshades.
There were separate bedrooms for the Queen and Prince Phillip, each with a single bed but an interconnecting door.
6 With its comfy sofas and photos of family members, “The overall idea was to give the impression of a country house at sea,” said Sir Hugh Casson, Britannia’s architect.
However the Queen’s request for a real fireplace was turned down on safety grounds – an electric one was added instead.
7 The ship did boast a garage for the Queen’s Rolls-Royce, a 24-hour laundry and even a knighting stool.
But, with austerity in mind, some items were recycled such as bed linen from the previous yacht HMY Victoria and Albert.
8 Britannia was crewed by 220 Royal Yachtsmen, 21 offi cers and captained by an admiral with a 26-strong Royal Marine band sometimes on board too.
She was the last ship in the Navy where sailors slept in hammocks.
To preserve quiet they habitually gave orders via hand signals and wore special plimsolls.
To maintain royal poise the crew also had to make sure the gangplank’s angle never exceeded 12 degrees.
9 On state visits Britannia carried fi ve tonnes of luggage, 45 staff including a surgeon and hairdresser plus bottles of the Queen’s favourite Malvern water for making her tea.
During a typical three months at sea 2,200 toilet rolls and 244 tins of Brasso would be used.
A hundred chickens could be roasted at a time in the ship’s two ovens.
10 Her maiden voyage in 1954 saw Prince Charles and Princess Anne travel from Portsmouth to Malta to meet their parents at the end of their Commonwealth tour.
The Duke of Edinburgh made two round-theworld voyages to Commonwealth countries covering 72,430 miles.
11 Each August Britannia traditionally sailed to the Cowes Week regatta off the Isle of Wight and then took the Royal Family on a tour of the west coast of Scotland, stopping off for private picnics on remote islands.
12 Britannia was the venue for four royal honeymoons.
Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones dined nightly in full evening dress on theirs in the Caribbean in 1960.
Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips suffered sea-sickness from storms on their 1973 honeymoon.
During Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s Mediterranean idyll in 1981 she famously joined the crew in the mess, playing the piano for a chorus of What Shall We Do With A Drunken Sailor?
The Duke and Duchess of York cruised to the Azores in 1986.
13 Designed to double up as a hospital ship in wartime, accommodating 200 patients, Britannia did see action – rescuing 1,082 refugees from a civil war raging in Aden in 1986.
14 In 2010 declassified papers revealed plans to use Britannia as a fl oating nuclear bunker.

In 1942 he established Polish Children Camp in Jamnagar-Balachadi for refugee Polish children who were brought out of the USSR during World War II. It existed until 1945, when it was closed and the children were transferred to Valivade, a quarter of a city Kolhapur.[6][7][8] The camp site today is part of 300 acre campus of the Sainik School, Balachadi.[9] The Jamsaheb Digvijay Singh Jadeja School in Warsaw was established to honor this legacy.[10] In 2016, 50 years after Jam Saheb's death, Poland's Parliament unanimously adopted a special resolution honoring Jam Saheb Digvijay Sinhji for his aid to Polish children refugees during WWII.[11][12]
A documentary titled Little Poland in India was made in collaboration of both Indian and Polish governments to honor the efforts of Maharaja Jam Sahib.[13]
After independence of India, he signed the Instrument of Accession to the Dominion of India on 15 August 1947. He merged Nawanagar into the United State of Kathiawar the following year, serving as its Rajpramukh until the Government of India abolished the post in 1956.
