Maletti Group Attacks BRITISH RETREAT 220KM
Graziani began the invasion of Egypt on 13 September, intending to squeeze the enemy between both offensives. His five divisions with 200 tanks stormed the border, taking Sollum, while the British Western Desert Force, consisting of the 7th Armoured and 4th Indian Division (and Free French Marines, Goums and Senussi rebels), fell back. Just two days later, the Italians had penetrated sixty miles, overrunning Sidi Barrani. After four days on the march, Graziani halted the 10th Army eighty miles west of the British defenses dug in at Mersa Matruh. (Mussolini's War, Frank Joseph, p. 62, Casemate Publishers, 2010)
Deploying an armored screen to their front, the British withdrew to Mersa Matruh about 220 kilometers east of the Libyan border on the coastal road. (A Military History of Africa, Timothy J. Stapleton, p. 216, ABC-CLIO, 2013)
The Treaty of 1936 made Egypt responsible for her own defence — in theory at any rate — although her army was to come under British command in case of war. At that time she had some 12,000 men under arms. (Lord Wavell, 1883-1941: A Military Biography, Robert John Collins, p. 197, Hodder & Stoughton, 1948)
Italian dispatches said today Libyan soldiers performed the seemingly impossible feat of marching 60 miles in a desert sandstorm to surprise a British garrison at Sidi Barrani, Egypt, and capture that strongly defended second line of defence. The Italian high command declared that the resistance of the army massed from all parts of the British empire to defend the western desert had been crushed everywhere ... The British hardly expected human beings were capable of the endurance displayed by the LIbyan troops who seized Sidi Barrani ... and expected them to use the customary Arab practice of covering up during a sandstorm such as swept in from the Sahara Tuesday.( ITALIANS REPORT SUCCESS IN DESERT, Ludlington Daily News, 18 September 1940)
In view of his shortage of motor-vehicles, Graziani was able to employ only five divisions and the motorized Maletti detachment, which, however, was also slimmed down. These forces formed the XXIII Army Corps under General Annibale Bergonzili, which comprised the homeland divisions Cirene, Marmarica, and 23 Marzo. (Germany and the Second World War, Volume III, Gerhard Schreiber, Bernd Stegemann, Detlef Vogel, p. 271, Clarendon Press, 1995)
In taking Sidi Barrani, Graziani had covered 60 of the 315 miles between the Libyan frontier at Sollum and Alexandria. (Divide and Conquer, p. 98, Bookmart Limited, 2005)
When General Graziani was moving towards Sidi Barrani, Free Frenchmen were among the units that stopped his further advance. (Bulletins from Britain, Issues 19-43, British Library of Information, 1941)
Italian Army in Russia
When Mussolini offered his help to Hitler in his attack on the Soviet Union, the proposal was reluctantly accepted. But the outstanding performance of the Italian Expeditionary Force - CSIR - did not go unnoticed and when Operation Barbarossa lost its thrust, it was Hitler himself to ask Mussolini for help. In the summer of 1942 Mussolini added 5 more divisions to the 3 already at the front line forming the Italian 8th Army, the ARMIR. Soon they had to face an ever growing tide of Soviet forces. In the winter of 1942 the ratio reached 10 to 1. With temperatures often reaching -40, the ARMIR fought ferociously and managed to hold the Russians on the other side of the Don River. But when the German 385 Div pulled back without informing the Italian Command, Italian units had to leave their outposts to avoid encirclement. But it was too late. The ARMIR had to fight every inch of the way back.
Lt Crosio, leading a Sappers unit attached to the Ravenna Division, was one of the few who made it back but during the retreat he discovered a very disturbing truth.

Italian Army in Russia Movie (Ravenna & Cosseria Divisions)
In spite of the unfavourable balance of forces – the 'Cosseria' and the 'Ravenna' faced eight to nine Russian divisions and an unknown number of tanks – the atmosphere among Italian staffs and troops was certainly not pessimistic.... The Italians, especially the officers of the 'Cosseria', had confidence in what they thought were well built defensive positions. (All or Nothing: The Axis and the Holocaust 1941–43, Jonathan Steinberg, p. ?, Routledge, 2003)
Contrary to German efforts to paint the Italians as scapegoats, the Cosseria and Ravenna divisions put up unexpectedly tough resistance, forcing Valutin to commit three of his four tanks corps before he finally got his breakthrough. (Tank Warfare on the Eastern Front 1941-1942, Robert Forczyk, Pen and Sword, 2014)
16-19 December 1942
From the Soviet bridgehead at Mamon, fifteen infantry divisions supported by no less than one hundred tanks attacked the Italian Infantry Division Cosseria and Ravenna and advanced against Sforzesca, too. Outnumbered 9 to 1, the Italians resisted for two days. (A Military History of Italy, Ciro Paoletti, p. 177, Greenwood Publishing Group, 2008)
During this phase, the Germans praised the steadfastness of Italian infantry, who held out tenaciously even in isolated strongpoints but eventually reached their breaking-point under this constant pressure. (The Unknown Eastern Front: The Wehrmacht and Hitler's Foreign Soldiers, Rolf-Dieter Müller, p. 83-84, I.B.Tauris, 2014)
17 December 1942
On 17 December, Kuznetsov committed General-Major Pavel P. Poluboiarov's 17th Tank Corps, General-Major Boris S. Bakharov's 18th Tank Corps and General-Major Petr R. Pavlov's 25th Tank Corps into an infantry support role and finally broke through the front of the Italian II Army Corps (Sforzesca', 'Ravenna', 'Cosseria' Inf Divs). (Tank Warfare on the Eastern Front 1941-1942, Robert Forczyk, Pen and Sword, 2014)
The attack at dawn failed to penetrate fully at first and developed into a grim struggle with Italian strongpoints, lasting for hours. The Ravenna Division was the first to be overrun. A gap emerged that was hard to close, and there was no holding back the Red Army when it deployed the mass of its tank forces the following day. German reinforcements came too late in the breakthrough battle. (The Unknown Eastern Front: The Wehrmacht and Hitler's Foreign Soldiers, Rolf-Dieter Müller, p. 84, I.B.Tauris, 2014)
20 December 1942
On the Don river front German and Italian troops were said to be still engaged against strong Soviet infantry and tank formations. ( Nazis Admit Heavy Blows In Russia, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, 21 December 1942)
The German 298th Division stopped taking orders from the Italian 35th Corps and began taking orders from the German staff of the Italian 29th Corps. The division retreated from its positions, and did not bother to inform General Francesco Zingales, the Italian commander of the 35th Corps. (The Regio Esercito: The Italian Royal Army in Mussolini's Wars, 1935-1943, Patrick Cloutier, pp. 156-157, Lulu Press, 2013)
Germans efforts to cut themselves loose from the Italians and escape on their own, brought little success: abandoning joint defense eased the Russian task of encircling Axis forces. The German 298th Division and the German staff of the Italian 29th Corps Headquarters still ended up behind enemy lines with their Italian comrades-in-arms. (The Regio Esercito: The Italian Royal Army in Mussolini's Wars, 1935-1943, Patrick Cloutier, p. 157, Lulu Press, 2013)

20171031 1600 LZR ILTK Italy - Dedication prayers and Recitation of the Heart sutra
Rinpoche started with retreat session. At the end of the session Rinpoche led dedication prayers and then requested all the people to recite the Heart Sutra and prayer after the heart sutra (dispelling obstacles) for one of the retreat participants who had been asked to leave, due to some mental problems. Rinpoche reminded us to dedicate for all sentient beings, for any obstacles to His Holiness to be pacified, for the FPMT Dharma organization, Lama Tzong Khapa Institute and all those studying the Masters Program and Basic Program and so forth, to be most beneficial for the sentient beings, to quickly enlighten the numberless sentient beings and to be free from all obstacles. Rinpoche said that the meaning of the profound meaning of the sherab parol kyi chinpa, the wisdom gone beyond, the profound meaning you think in the mind and the profound words you recite. By depending on that, then the mara, the great evil being is dispelled. Similar way, also this, due to thinking of the profound meaning of the prajnaparamita and reciting the profound words the obstacles, yourself and as I mentioned the particular boy, all the obstacles as I described, inner and outer, also the disease, can be also counted as inner, then outer obstacles, spirit harms and so forth, are pacified.

Operation Crusader ITALIANS SAVE BUMBLING ROMMEL
Trieste, and Savona had probably accounted for around 200 British tanks and a similar number of vehicles, while Bologna, Trento, and Pavia contained Tobruk. Nor could Rommel take credit for this, since Bastico and Gambara had as much trouble locating him as did Bayerlein and Crüwell during the first four days of the Crusader battles. It was, in fact, the independent actions taken by the Italians and Rommel's German subordinates that saved him from disaster. But again Rommel threw away his advantage in his 'dash to the wire', a manoeuvre that Carver labels 'rashness' bordering on 'madness'. Stringing out his mobile units over sixty miles, Rommel lost contact with his staff and the Italian command for four days, and reduced his armoured units to 'complete ineffectiveness' — he ignored intelligence of British ammunition dumps given him on 20 November. Nor did his return end the confusion generated by his absence, for he went to bed and left the battle to Gambara and Cruwell. (The American Experience in World War II, Walter L. Hixson, p. 253, Taylor & Francis, 2003)
According to Wilhelm F. Flicke, a key intelligence officer in the Afrika Korps, the Black Code that Italian Army intelligence stole from the US Embassy in Rome, allows Rommel to survive the hammer blows of Operation Crusader:
The British were much surprised. Preparations for the offensive had been so thorough that destruction of the Axis troops in its very first phase had been considered certain. Something had not clicked. General Auchinleck, Commander in Chief in the Near East and Wavell's successor, flew from Cairo to Cunningham's headquarters and on 26 November relieved him of his post. A young general of 44 years, Ritchie, was appointed commander of the British Eighth Army. On 8 December Rommel pushed through a weak point in the British encirclement, disengaging his troops without being detected. Before the British recovered from their surprise he had escaped to the westward. On 11 December Churchill stated in the House of Commons that the Libyan campaign had not gone as expected. (THE LOST KEYS TO EL ALAMEIN, available online )
Fred Vanderschmidt, US correspondent in London, writing about the Italian fighting spirit during Operation Crusader:
In all fairness it must be said that the Italians are fighting bravely and well in Cirenaica. The British on the scene acknowledge that they have defended themselves with skill and valor, perhaps better so than the Gemans, and against superior force ... The Italians are having their chance to go down fighting and they are proudly taking it. ( Italians Making Last Dying Stand On Sands Of Desert, Gettysburg Times, 29 November 1941)
That day, 29 November, the 132nd Ariete Division (and accompanying 3rd and 5th Bersaglieri Motorcycle Battalions under Majors Cantella and Gastaldi) overran the 21st New Zealand Battalion along with the New Zealand field hospital which included the prisoner of war cage. The Italians were reported to have captured some 200 hospital guards, along with 1,000 wounded and 700 medical staff. They also freed some 200 Germans being held captive in the enclosure on the grounds of the hospital. ( The Bologna Division: 19 November – 10 December, 1941)
“On the night of the 13th Rommel ordered another withdrawal, and now the animosity between German and Italian broke into conflict. In several cases Germans who had no vehicles stole Italian vehicles at gunpoint, and some German battalions stealthily crept out of the line without bothering to notify let alone coordinate with, the Italians on the flank. The sun had risen before some Italians learned of the retreat. This meant that much heavy equipment was left behind, including precious anti-tank guns, and tens of thousands of Italians began walking across a flat desert swept by a cold wind under the eyes of every pilot in the Allied air force.” (The Forgotten Axis: Germany’s Partners and Foreign Volunteers in World War II, J. L. Ready, pp. 313-314, Jefferson,1987)
Rommel now had an argument with Generals Bastico and Gambara over his decision to withdraw the German troops ... the 15th Panzer Division was ordered to return to the assistance of the Italians... ( The Bologna Division: 19 November – 10 December, 1941)

The P40: Italy's Killer World War II Tank You May Have Never Heard Of
Italy was not renown in World War II for its tanks, which tended to be light and poorly used on the battlefield. But the Italian arms industry did produce interesting designs, some quite formidable.
The Carro Armato P26/40 was a rare example of an Italian medium tank—the Italian army referred to it as a heavy tank, as it was heavy in comparison to Italy’s other vehicles, but it was roughly similar to America’s M4 Sherman, the Soviet T-34 and the German Panzer IV medium tanks.

El Haseiat ITALIAN NAVY SAVES ROMMEL
Supply difficulties destroyed the mobility of the Afrika Korps ... On 14 December, it had only enough fuel for fifty kilometres, and feared it would run out completely. (Intelligence and Anglo-American Air Support in World War Two: The Western Desert and Tunisia, 1940-43, B. Gladman, p. 128, Springer, 2008)
To insure that Rommel got supplies, the Italian Navy escorted a mid-December convoy of four merchant ships with 4 battleships, 5 cruisers, and 21 destroyers. (The Second World War: Europe and the Mediterranean, Thomas E. Griess, p. 167, Avery Publishing Group, 1989)
Hinsley remarked that 'it was the arrival of these supplies in north Africa which permitted Rommel to mount his successful counter-offensive of 21 January 1942. More immediately, however, the 44 new tanks, warnings of those arrival had been discounted by General Ritchie's Intelligence Staff, enabled Rommel to inflict two defeats on 22nd Armoured Brigade on 28 and 30 December, in which 60 British tanks were destroyed for the loss of only 14 German tanks. These clashes effectively brought 'Crusader' to an end. (Malta and British Strategic Policy, 1925-43, Douglas Austin, p. 20, Routledge, 2004)
Operation Crusader was successful : general Rommel was obliged to withdraw his troops from the siege of Tobruk and to Gazala to avoid the total destruction of his army. After Gazala, the Axis withdrawal continued to Benghasi, then Agedabia, followed by British troops with superiority in number. On the 27th of December, while the Guards Brigade attacked the defense line in the east of Agedabia, the 22nd Armored Brigade outflanked Axis forces by the desert and attacked from El Haseiat. The British tanks crews were convinced to destroy an already routed enemy but it was a very big surprise for them when they were confronted to 60 panzers who counter attacked and defeated them. The remnants of the British armored brigade could escape only because of the lack of fuel for the panzers. On the battlefield, 37 British tanks were burning for only 7 German panzers destroyed. The year 1941 ended on this last battle. Some days later, Rommel attacked again to the east. ( Battle of El Haseiat - December 27, 1941 - December 30, 1941)
