TWENTIETH CENTURY BRITAIN - THE FLYING CCOTSMAN, 1930:
The Flying Scotsman is perhaps the most famous locomotive in the world. After years as a museum piece, it is returning to service this year. To mark this special occasion, Bright Bricks have made this special 8-metre long LEGO version of this historic train that features over 100,000 brick. The first time the name 'Flying Scotsman' was used was for a passenger train service in 1862 from London to Edinburgh. In 1923 the Flying Scotsman locomotive was created for the railway company London and North Eastern Railways (LNER). The Flying Scotsman is an A3 Pacific locomotive designed by Sir Nigel Gresley who later went on to design the World famous Mallard locomotive, the fastest steam locomotive in History. The Flying Scotsman remained in service until 1963, after which it went on a World tour, returning to England before being restored. The locomotive has recently undergone another restoration and now appears in her British Rail dark green livery. The model depicted here is the Flying Scotsman as it would have appeared in 1930, in her original LNER apple green colour scheme. The Flying Scotsman pulled a wide range of rolling stock in here career, including the famous Pullman carriages, like those depicted here. The model is 1 in 10 scale, and was built by Nick Barrett and a team of builders from Bright Bricks over a period of three mouth.
In Newspaper intercom:
What could you do with 550 hours, half a million LEGO bricks and lots of bricks, which was founded by Duncan Titchmarsh the only Professional Lego Maker endorsed by LEGO in the United Kingdom, has created an eight-metre long model of The Flying Scotsman locomotive which will be on display from this weekend. The nation's favourite train, The Flying Scotsman returned to the UK this year after a £4.2 million refurbishment. The exhibition's model contains approximately 100,000 individual LEGO bricks and took over 550 hours to build. With over 25 models on display, visitors to the exhibition will also discover a giant diorama of Saxon life, a model of Beatrix Potter and her creations, a two-metre long model of HMS Victory, Tudor Monarchs, The Golden Hind, a Viking longboat and a large model of Lowther Castle, all bustling with LEGO characters dressed in period costumes, alongside many others. Young LEGO enthusiasts can bring history to life with a range of hands on activities inspired by the surrounding models in the exhibition, from racing a wind powered train, creating a model for the zip wire, to constructing catapults and creating family portraits in LEGO. Throughout the summer holidays, Rheged, near Penrith, will be running daily activities inspired by history and LEGO. Fans can make and take home their very own miniature Flying Scotsman Lego model, customise a minifig, learn basic programming with a LEGO Mindstroms workshop, alongside other ego and history-inspired craft workshops. There's also a LEGO sculpture spotters trail to explore around the centre, and a 13-metre Hadrian's Wall country, where you can write your name in LEGO.
Bricks In Times: Hands on History in LEGO exhibition runs from Saturday until Sunday, September 4th.
Open 10am to 5pm daily.

Researchers believe they have found the kingdom of Rheged in Dumfries and Galloway
Researchers believe they have found the kingdom of Rheged in Dumfries and Galloway
The kingdom of Rheged is one of the most elusive in Dark Age Britain, famous for contributing to some of the earliest medieval poetry composed in the UK.
But despite its reputation, the location of Rheged - ruled by King Urien around 600AD - has remained a mystery for centuries.

Cynfarch Oer was probably a 6th-century king of the Sub-Roman realm of Rheged, believed to be located in north-west England and south-west Scotland.Next to nothing is known about Cynfarch. He appears in the Old Welsh pedigrees of the Brythonic 'Men of the North' as the son of the equally obscure Meirchion Gul and father of the slightly better documented Urien Rheged. His name was well remembered however and his family were known as the 'Cynferchyn' in his honour.
