A Scenic Float | Under The Sawtooth Mountains (Stanley, ID)
Stanley Idaho is one of the most scenic places on earth. The Sawtooth Mountains provide an amazing backdrop to a plethora of outdoor activities. With the Salmon River running through this beautiful mountain town there are a number of white water river opportunities to be enjoyed. We teamed up with our friends at the River Company for a nice relaxing scenic float on the headwater of the mighty Salmon. If you come to Stanley from Boise, through Banks or Idaho City, the River Company is the first building on the left of the highway as you enter town. You can book day trips there or rent inflatable kayaks or stand up paddle boards. The scenic stretch of the Salmon is very easy and you can do it on your own, but if you have no river experience a guide or outfitter is the safest way to go. The scenic float makes for a great family half day trip either before or after lunch. The boat box on the river is located about 2-3 miles past upper Stanley heading north on highway 75. It will be on your right hand side. It fits at most 4 people so plan accordingly to miss the crowds.

Idaho State Highway 21 is the Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway, primarily a two-lane highway from Boise to Stanley. With two-thirds of its length in Boise County, it passes by historic Idaho City and the village of Lowman to the western edge of the Sawtooth Mountains, then along their northern boundary to Stanley. The road is designated as one of Idaho's scenic byways and provides access to Sawtooth National Recreation Area from Boise and the Treasure Valley. It primarily follows the Boise River and its tributary Mores Creek to the Boise Basin and beyond, and then the upper South Fork of the Payette River and a tributary from Lowman to Banner Creek Summit.

Owyhee River Wilderness
In 2009, the United States Congress designated 267,328 acres of the Owyhee River and its tributaries as Wilderness. Located in the high sagebrush plateaus of southwest Idaho, the Owyhee River Wilderness is defined by rivers cutting steep basalt canyons out of high desert. It is a landscape of no trails and only few rough roads to gain access to empty open land.

Stanley Canyon Trail Full-Trail 360
A full 4K 360° VR compatible video of Stanley Canyon Trail starting in the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA). For those with a military ID you can drive up to the trailhead to begin this hike but civilians will have to park in the parking lot just to the East of the guard shack. This trails starts off steep but levels off about half way through the trail. Throughout the hike you will see Spruce, Fir, and Pine. Towards the top of the incline there are Aspens that are beginning to change to their fall colors. The reservoir unfortunately has been drained due to concerns that the dam is not completely sound.

Timber Recreational Land Harvard Idaho
Flat Creek is large recreational timber tract nestled within the secluded forests of Latah County. The property gets its title from a creek by the same name which meanders along almost the entire length of the Eastern portion of property. The approximately 1234 acres of moderately rolling topography is currently a haven for wildlife, but the property presents many other opportunities to its new owner. With its well stocked diverse timber plantations, Flat Creek would make a solid timber investment. Subsequently, the vast acreage would also be an ideal hunting retreat or grazing ranch for livestock. The land also provides plenty of suitable building sites for a home or cabin. Besides its natural splendor, the amenities of Flat Creek include partial fencing, good roads throughout, views of the Palouse River and availability of utilities at the highway. The private atmosphere combined with the convenience of being close to town is another perk. Flat Creek is a mere 5 miles from Harvard, Idaho. Harvard is one of the three unincorporated towns named after famous Ivy League colleges in Latah County. It was one of the depot locations that Potlatch Lumber Company constructed a railroad through when they organized the Washington, Idaho & Montana Railway Company in the early 1900s. Today it lies along the White Pine Scenic Byway which directs travelers to the St. Joe National Forest. This quiet community is centrally located to a multitude of recreational activities. Just 10 minutes to the northeast is Laird Park Campground which has a swim park, hiking and horseback riding trails. Next to Laird Park is the Boy Scouts of America's Grizzly Park known as the Pride of the Palouse. About 40 miles in the other direction, is the 5300 rugged acres of Mary McCroskey State Park which offers even more outdoor recreation especially for horseback and ATV riders. Harvard is in close proximity (approximately 27 miles) to Moscow, which is the home of the University of Idaho. Moscow is known for its arts and cultural activities, hosting events such as the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, the Renaissance Fair and the Washington-Idaho Symphony. DIRECTIONS TO FLAT CREEK: From Harvard, Idaho drive West on Idaho Highway 6 to intersection of Highway 6 and Highway 9. Turn left (South) and drive approximately 5 miles along Highway 9 to mile marker 9. Go 0.25 mile past the railroad pass and turn left North on the unnamed gated road. To access the southern portion of the property drive approximately 0.5 mile and turn left on unnamed road to the west. To access the northern portion of the property continue driving from this point along the railroad bed approximately 4.9 miles. Road merges to become Flat Creek Road. At the open area turn left (South) on the unnamed road.
Idaho police launch new drone program
If over the past year, you've seen a drone hovering over a car crash or a crime scene in Idaho, it's likely the Idaho State Police. The agency launched a new program, giving them extra eyes in the sky. KXLY4's Brittany Paris reports.
