Freedom of electronic speech. Mishawaka City Council
I'm Johnathan Smith from 209 North Cedar St. The Cedar St. bridge is in my front yard. I also represent a small newspaper called MishawakaPress.com. For at least the last 6 months, I have not been allowed to have the right to e-mail anyone from the city, including my representatives, the Building Department or anyone at mishawaka.in.gov. I was blocked from these services by Mayor Jeff Rea. I said something that he felt was threatening during negotiations with the city about my property. The city wants my property for the extension of the River Walk. You can read everything I said to him at MishawakaPress.com, on the front page. I had suggested I would run for mayor in 2011, and I can only assume this is what he thought was threatening. When he resigned his office a short time ago, on Mishawaka City's Facebook page, I commented on how grateful I was for him to leave and said how I liked Mayor Dave Wood. I was then removed from the Facebook page, also.
In the last couple of weeks, I tried to negotiate with Mayor Dave Wood about getting my e-mail rights reinstated. I didn't get any response from him, so I went to Mayor Bob Beutter, knowing that he is still one of the city attorneys. Mayor Bob, acting as an ombudsman for me, got a response out of Mayor Dave. Mayor Dave said, and I quote, I understand Mayor Jeff terminated his access due to the threatening tone of his communications. I am willing to restore Mr. Smith's e-mail access to the city and the website. He has a clean slate with me. I do, however, expect that Mr. Smith can maintain a civil and professional dialogue and he will certainly get that from me.
To imagine that our electronic communications with the city are considered as privileges and not rights has me very concerned. What if a citizen knows of malfeasance and tries to bring it to the attention of other citizens and is blocked? Do we have to start putting billboards in our front yards to use our freedom of speech?
I would ask the city council to write a law stating that no one can be blocked from free access to electronic communication with the city. No matter how controversial a citizen may be, their taxes are paying for these services and they should be able to use them freely. It's possible that a law doesn't need to be written. I may already be protected under the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. I've hesitated at getting my attorney involved to find out. I hope the city government will come to its senses on its own. We live in the city of Mishawaka, Indiana, United States of America...not Communist China. I ask you all to please act like it and stand with me against this injustice.

Elkhart July ArtWalk
Check out this video showing the intersection of Art, Music, Wine, Dining, and Downtown Elkhart. We were amazed how many people came to downtown Elkhart for our first ArtWalk, this definitely confirmed our suspicions that our area is ripe for the picking, people want change and Arts & Culture can help transform our community!
As many communities have found, downtown areas can become better connected, more vibrant, and more economically stable when Art & Culture come to town.
ArtWalk Wednesday is the public celebration of art and the diverse cultural features of our community. We would like to continue building on Elkhart's burgeoning Arts & Entertainment district by sustaining ArtWalk on a regular basis. For more information, or to help sponsor future ArtWalks, contact us at: info@elkhartartwalk.com.

Mishawaka Memory #9 Penn 2010
It doesn't get much bigger than a Sectional Championship against your biggest rival. In 2010, Mishawaka was trying to do the unthinkable. Beat Penn for a 4th straight time. This one was for the Sectional Trophy. With a blanket of snow covering the frozen turf at Steele Stadium, Penn scored the first points of the game in the 3rd quarter. As time was running out on the Cavemen, the Maroons had the ball at midfield, when Sam Schrader hit DJ Strohl with a 15 yard pass near the Penn sideline. Strohl pitched it to Ben Versyp who took it 30 yards to the Kingsmen 14. And if you thought that was the Highlight of the Night, Kevin Day scored with 5.6 seconds to go to tie the game on a 6 yard run. So we went to overtime. That's when Schrader gave Mishawaka their first lead on a 2 yard touchdown. So it came down to this. The Gold Rush with a chance to tie it. But Versyp made the tackle. Mishawaka made it four wins over Penn and back to back Sectional Titles over the Kingsmen. 14-7 was the Final in Overtime.
