Rock Carvings in Tanum (UNESCO/NHK)
The rock carvings in Tanum, in the north of Bohuslän, are a unique artistic achievement not only for their rich and varied motifs (depictions of humans and animals, weapons, boats and other subjects) but also for their cultural and chronological unity. They reveal the life and beliefs of people in Europe during the Bronze Age and are remarkable for their large numbers and outstanding quality.

Tanum (Sweden) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Tanum in Sweden.
On the west coast of Sweden, north of Gothenburg and set amid rolling hills, is a small reconstructed Bronze Age village, the museum village of Tanum. Beginning in the third millennium B.C., the North European Bronze Age reached Scandinavia and transformed the structure of society. The people built settlements and lived together in huts as extended families. There was livestock and agriculture and village communities began to trade with those who were able to produce bronze tools and weaponry. Prehistoric images have been discovered in Tanum, impressive archaeological finds that date back to the Bronze Age. The images are to be found across a large area and are carved in shallow rock mounds, worked by stone tools. Today most of the carvings have been highlighted with red paint in order to make them more visible. Vitlycke is the most visited location and one of the largest with three hundred images. From a hill, several of the images that date back to the Last Ice Age can be seen. There are around forty thousand, the most common being of boats. The rock carvings of Tanum are vibrant, beautiful and varied and among the world’s most beautiful cultural treasures.

Åby rock carvings, Bohuslän, Sweden
After our visit to the Ocean House, dinner and some shopping in Lysekil, we drove to the Nordic Ark and checked in. We stayed at the Ark's own hotel - a good experience that I recommend. :-) The weather was still wonderful and we wanted to take a walk in the evening to check out the surroundings ... the Ark is a beautiful place, but we've only been inside the fences, never outside. The receptionist told us how to get to the Åby rock carvings, which are very old and quite spectacular. This place has been farmed for thousands of years but supposedly the carvings weren't 'discovered' till lik 1966 ... umm, OK. They are very well worth seeing, certainly. For those who have been to the Ark: The carvings are on a rock face across the road from the Wild Park, along the far side of the field away from the Land Farm. There's a path and you walk along the field for a bit just inside the forest. It's not far and it's totally worth it. :-)

Due to their long sequence chronology, susceptibility to climate changes and vandalism, rock art sites are also among the most vulnerable on the World Heritage List.
Rock art, in the form of paintings and engravings, is a clear and lasting evidence of the transmission of human thoughts and beliefs through art and graphic representations. It functions as a repository of memory, enabling each culture to speak about themselves and their origins in all geographical settings.
In July 2010, the UNESCO World Heritage Centre conducted a series of interviews with international experts working in the field of rock art on establishing an international digital archive in support of conserving rock art sites.
