MB GeoTour 10 – The Rock Shop in Souris, Manitoba
The Souris Rock Shop is located in Souris, Manitoba, at the junction of PTH 2 and 22. Specimens on display in the store are mainly from a Paleocene (Tertiary) gravel pit located along the Souris River, southeast of town. A one-day vehicle pass to the pit can be purchased where well-rounded clasts of petrified wood, jasper, flint, agate, epidote can be collected. The clasts were derived (in part) from the Rocky Mountains, elevated at the western edge of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin during the Laramide Orogeny. The gravel was reworked during the Pleistocene; and Precambrian cobbles and boulders were introduced into the mix. Visit: for more information, including hours of operation of the pit.

MB GeoTour 22 – Vermette Quarry
(07-29-08-08E1; NTS 62H09NE; NAD 83, Zone 14U, 682928E, 5506163N)
The partially water-filled Vermette gravel pit of Pleistocene age is located north of Richer, Manitoba and the Trans-Canada Highway. Piles of aggregate comprising locally-derived crushed sand and gravel and various other imported crushed materials (asphalt) can be seen on the site.

MB GeoTour 6 - Shale aggregate quarry in the Upper Cretaceous Odanah Member, R.M. Thompson
(05-24-04-07W1; NTS 62G08SW; NAD 83, Zone 14U, 551221E, 5462942N) The 6 m high working face of the Upper Cretaceous Odanah Member of the Pierre Shale in the R.M. of Thompson shale aggregate quarry is situated southwest of Miami, Manitoba. The well-bedded shale is typically hard, grey and is cut by joints that are stained with iron and manganese oxides. The shale is used as a crushed aggregate on roads. In the past, Red River Brick and Tile of Lockport, Manitoba mixed the Odanah Member with clay and shale from other places in the Province, to produce common and face brick.
MB GeoTour 18 – La Rivière Quarry
(7-30-3-9W1, NTS 62G2NW, NAD 83, Zone 14U, 524187E, 5454291N)
The Upper Cretaceous Odanah Member of the Pierre Shale is exposed in quarry, immediately east of PTH 3, east of La Rivière. The silica-rich shale is quarried as aggregate, probably for use as “road metal” on nearby municipal section roads.
MB GeoTour 3 – Roadside outcrop of Upper Cretaceous Morden Member of the Carlile Formation
A 300 m long roadside outcrop of Upper Cretaceous Morden Member of the Carlile Formation is situated north of Morden, Manitoba, near the base of the Pembina Hills portion of the Manitoba Escarpment. The thin bedded non-calcareous organic black shale contains small colourless translucent gypsum crystals and yellow jarosite, which probably formed as the result of dissociation of pyrite. Also present are small brown resinous fragments of much larger calcareous septarian (turtle-back) concretions. The black shale was once used to produce bricks near Lockport, Manitoba.

The Face of Agriculture is Changing
The face of agriculture is changing every day and producers across the province are adapting and finding new, innovative ways to join industry partners participating in world markets. Agriculture provides 62,000 jobs to Manitoba's economy and directly employs approximately 30,000 workers. In 2010, agriculture contributed 4.2 per cent of Manitoba's total gross domestic product (GDP) at the primary level.

MB GeoTour 42 – Hecla-Grindstone Provincial Park, Ordovician WinnipegRed River formation contact 2014
The contact between the underlying Winnipeg Formation and the overlying Red River Formation is exposed on the northwestern shore of Hecla Island in Lake Winnipeg (5-25-24-6E1, NTS 62P2NE; NAD 83, Zone 14U, 665085E, 5673801N). The contact is exposed in an aggregate quarry located on a short hiking trail to the west of the Hecla campground.
Summary
The contact between the silica sand of the underlying Winnipeg Formation and the overlying dolomitic limestone of the Red River Formation is exposed on the northwestern shore of Hecla Island in Lake Winnipeg. The contact is exposed in an aggregate quarry located on a short hiking trail to the west of the Hecla campground.
This video shows the contact between the underlying Winnipeg Formation and the overlying Red River Formation on the northwestern shore of Hecla Island, west of the Hecla Campground within Hecla-Grindstone Provincial Park. The Winnipeg Formation-Dog Head Member contact is exposed in an aggregate quarry. According to Bannatyne (1975, p. 19), the basal Dog Head consists of silty, argillaceous nodular dolomitic limestone containing pyrite nodules and quartz grains. Bannatyne (1988, p. 5) stated that thin bedded dolomitic limestone from the Dog Head was used as flagstone for ornamental walls in the Park; and that the unconsolidated sand from the Winnipeg Formation was also recovered from the quarry.

MB GeoTour 36 – Geology: The Field Observation Process – Chasing the Ordovician Winnipeg Formation 2014
An exposure of Ordovician Winnipeg Formation silica sand is situated at the base of a Pleistocene gravel pit, located southeast of Seymourville (10-25-25-8E1, NTS 62P1NW; NAD 83, Zone 14U, 685169E, 5671480N).
Summary
An exposure of Ordovician Winnipeg Formation silica sand is situated at the base of a Pleistocene gravel pit, located southeast of Seymourville. The outcrop shows that the Winnipeg Formation appears to be laterally continuous to the southeast, for several kilometres away from the exposure at MB GeoTour 35. The area of the silica sand exposed at this location was described by Watson (1985).
This video shows Ordovician Winnipeg Formation beneath Pleistocene glacial till in a gravel pit southeast of Seymourville. Jim can be seen tracing the sand at this location, using the process of field observation; and then correlating the exposure to GeoTour 35, located several kilometers away to the northwest. According to Watson (1985, p. 23) a drill hole in the gravel pit penetrated an additional 26.8 m of sandstone, averaging 95.22% silica.
Based upon drilling of two holes in the area south of Seymourville and an altimeter survey, Watson (1985, p. 23 estimated that 600 million tonnes of silica sand averaging 95% SiO2 is present over an 1800 ha area.
