The Rock of Gibraltar - Top Things To See and Do | 90+ Countries With 3 Kids
After a 4 month adventure through Southern Africa what better a way to transition back to Europe than a day trip to Gibraltar.
Gibraltar colloquially known as The Rock, (or simply 'Gib'), is an overseas territory of the United Kingdom sitting at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea. It is bordered by Spain to the north and the people of Gibraltar are ferociously loyal British citizens despite being bilingual in English and Spanish.
The most famous landmark at the entrance to the beautiful Mediterranean Sea, Gibraltar has literally been a place to stop for the nations of the world since the dawn of sailing. Gibraltarians, Britons, Spaniards, Italians, Maltese, Moors, Greeks, Visigoths, Romans and earliest of all, according to archaeological research, Neanderthal Man. They all came, saw and desired to conquer although few succeeded.
Positioned at the southern tip of the Iberian peninsular Gibraltar is not an island as many believe but an isthmus. There are over 130 caves in the Rock inside of which ancient people sheltered from the elements. In more recent times visitors have taken to the Rock for a different kind of refuge and each added to its blend of culture. Today Gibraltar enjoys a mixture of customs, a colourful language and a religious tolerance that is unique in the world.
We hope you too will enjoy the enigma that is Gibraltar just like the millions of that come to explore the hidden secrets of the Rock before you.
Enjoy the video and let us know where you're watching from!

GIBRALTAR - The great Rock Of Gibraltar is an amazing place to visit. The highlight is of course taking the cable car to the top to see the free roaming monkeys. They play with tourists and often sneak into stores to grab some snacks.
All around Gibraltar there are clear views of Africa which is a spectacular sight. Being right between two continents is a magical experience.
Gibraltar is packed full of culture and history that is sure to be a very unique experience for anyone who visits.
Strait of Gibraltar Pillars of Hercules Rock of Gibraltar
The Pillars of Hercules (Latin: Columnae Herculis, Greek: Ἡράκλειοι Στῆλαι, Arabic: أعمدة هرقل, Spanish: Columnas de Hércules) was the phrase that was applied in Antiquity to the promontories that flank the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar. The northern Pillar is the Rock of Gibraltar (now part of the British overseas territory of Gibraltar). A corresponding North African peak not being predominant, the identity of the southern Pillar has been disputed throughout history,[1] with the two most likely candidates being Monte Hacho in Ceuta and Jebel Musa in Morocco.

Climbing the Rock of Gibraltar
Our first adventure in van life was climbing the #RockofGibraltar!!
Lou and I have been looking at the Rock of #Gibraltar for over 5 months while working on Ody in the small town of Casares in southern Spain. Just last week we finally had the opportunity to go there in person, climb to the top, meet all the #monkeys, and enjoy the hard work we put in to make our van life a dream a reality. I can't put into words what it felt like to go on our first hike from the van. One of our biggest goals in the van was to spend more time in nature, and this hike made me feel like we had finally made that happen : )
Love from Faro,
Dana (& Lou)

The Rock of Gibraltar and the monkeys
Tour to Gribraltar crossing the 1777m runway of Gibraltar Airport, which is listed as one of the most dangerous Airports in the World. Heading on 4-lane Winston Churchill Road to the Mosque on the southern tip of the peninsula to also see the lighthouse. Only 5 more minutes to drive until you park your car and keep on walking on the Rock of Gibraltar (Peñón de Gibraltar, sometimes called by its original Latin name, Calpe) It is 426 m (1,398 ft) high. The Rock is Crown property of the United Kingdom, and borders Spain. Most of the Rock's upper area is covered by a nature reserve, which is home to around 300 Barbary macaques. These macaques, as well as a labyrinthine network of tunnels, attract a large number of tourists each year.
