Kickin' in Britain: Richmond
Happy Monday! I gathered footage over the weekend in the beautiful town of Richmond upon Thames. What an amazing little spot to come and visit. I did not even have time to go through Richmond Park which is supposed to be visually spectacular. I think I will have to go during the week to grab some footage there! 2 episodes coming out this week which include footage from Richmond Park and Kew. Does anyone know cool spots for me to check out in Kew? Let me know in the comments!

Grandsire on Christ Church's Flood-Light Six!!
I have wanted a decent video of bells from Christ Church's floodlit church for a while, so here is a remake of my old, crappy one. This time it is Grandsire being rung, the second half in particular sounded good and I wish I'd kept recording as the ringing got better and better!! But no matter, just enjoy the sound of this pretty little Taylor 6, and admire the way the church is expertly floodlit (the architect who designed St Mark Swindon floodlighting could learn a few lessons here, we have white for the nave, and no tower floodlighting due to waterlogged electrics!! The tower used to be bright, harsh, ghastly orange and the spire blue so you couldn't see the spire from any further than 50m back!!)

QANTA vs. Ken Jennings at UW
Jeopardy! champion Ken Jennings and cutting-edge quiz-playing AI QANTA go head-to-CPU in quiz bowl
UW Computer Science and Engineering is pleased to host an event for both trivia aficionados and those interested in artificial intelligence: a quiz bowl match pitting a computer against the most successful Jeopardy! player of all time.
On Friday evening, a team of researchers will debut its computerized question-answering system (QANTA) in a tossup-only competition against Ken Jennings. Unlike other question answering systems that are allowed to see the entire question at once (e.g., IBM Watson, which previously defeated Ken Jennings on Jeopardy!), this system decides when it has enough information to answer a question and is thus able to handle quiz bowl-style tossup questions.
Prior to the exhibition game, Prof. Jordan Boyd-Graber of the University of Colorado at Boulder, one of QANTA's developers, will briefly discuss the state-of-the-art machine learning research that went into the system and how interested students can get involved by using and improving the open-source system.
Ken Jennings, a former UW student, in addition to shattering American game show records, is a best-selling author and pop culture phenomenon who lives in Seattle, Washington.

Dedham: Schindler 300A Elevator @ Sears, Dedham Mall
This is the Schindler 300A Hydraulic Elevator, with MT Promises Fixtures, in the Sears at Dedham Mall, Dedham, Massachusetts.
By Mall, I mean one of those crappy California-Style outdoor ones. NOT a good idea in New England.
It's a Schindler. That's enough to describe it.

Timeline of United States inventions (before 1890)
Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain

SUMMARY
=======
A timeline of United States inventions (before 1890) encompasses the ingenuity and innovative advancements of the United States within a historical context, dating from the Colonial Period to the Gilded Age, which have been achieved by inventors who are either native-born or naturalized citizens of the United States. Copyright protection secures a person's right to his or her first-to-invent claim of the original invention in question, highlighted in Article I, Section 8, Clause 8 of the United States Constitution, which gives the following enumerated power to the United States Congress:
In 1641, the first patent in North America was issued to Samuel Winslow by the General Court of Massachusetts for a new method of making salt. On April 10, 1790, President George Washington signed the Patent Act of 1790 (1 Stat. 109) into law proclaiming that patents were to be authorized for any useful art, manufacture, engine, machine, or device, or any improvement therein not before known or used. On July 31, 1790, Samuel Hopkins of Pittsford, Vermont became the first person in the United States to file and to be granted a patent for an improved method of Making Pot and Pearl Ashes. The Patent Act of 1836 (Ch. 357, 5 Stat. 117) further clarified United States patent law to the extent of establishing a patent office where patent applications are filed, processed, and granted, contingent upon the language and scope of the claimant's invention, for a patent term of 14 years with an extension of up to an additional 7 years. However, the Uruguay Round Agreements Act of 1994 (URAA) changed the patent term in the United States to a total of 20 years, effective for patent applications filed on or after June 8, 1995, thus bringing United States patent law further into conformity with international patent law. The modern-day provisions of the law applied to inventions are laid out in Title 35 of the United States Code (Ch. 950, sec. 1, 66 Stat. 792).
From 1836 to 2011, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has granted a total of 7,861,317 patents relating to several well-known inventions appearing throughout the timeline below.
Mediocre Schindler 330A Hydraulic Elevators-Christmas Tree Shops/Bed Bath Beyond Crystal Mall
Here's the first video from this visit, which was nearly two weeks ago, during their renovation celebration, in which they had a Grand Reopening of the mall after a (much needed) renovation. I was busy, so I never got the chance to upload this...
These things are alright. I mean...they do the job of ADA accessibility. However, they do creek a lot. Well, it's Schindler, what do you expect?
This anchor was Filene's from the original 1984 opening of the mall. They used to have Westinghouse escalators and an elevator. However, they were ripped out in 2007, when this was converted to Christmas Tree Shops (1st floor), and Bed Bath and Beyond (2nd). Thus, these elevators and the escalators were installed.
